1. Q1) In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. • Before producing our magazines; both student
and music magazines, we conducted some
research to help us with planning the design
of the magazines.
4. we researched the different codes and
conventions of established magazines. We
looked at the basic codes and conventions of a
magazine in general and then the codes and
conventions of common student and music
magazines.
6. • we analysed the front cover and contents page of
a student magazine so we know how and what
our student magazine should look like. We also
analysed the front cover, contents pages and
double page spreads of 3 different magazines so
that when it came to producing our own we
knew what to be doing for instance where the
masthead should be positioned, the type of
picture and where it should be positioned. For
our music magazine we also did research on
what typical artists of the genre we chose speak
and dress; we could then implement this on how
we present our artist on the front page.
8. When producing our student magazine we
had to focus carefully on how we were going
to present out model. We decided to use a
female as that was what seemed to be on
most of the magazines that we saw so we
thought we would follow the trend. We
thought that making our model appear
stressed would be good as it would give it a
humorous approach rather than something
plain and simple as we thought this would
better attract people this is how they would
be feeling during the transaction from collage
to university.
9. For my music magazine I used the information
I had researched for my photo shoot. My
model was wearing a Hollister top with black
bottoms, he also had a chain, necklace and
leather gloves; things you are likely to see a
normal R&B artist wear. I chose to just use a
solo artist for my front cover as there aren’t
many bands in R&B and the majority of
magazines that I saw when conducting my
research were either male or female artists
alone.
10. • When it came to designing our student magazine
we did not want to use too many colours on the
front cover and we did not want to use dark
colours such as black and red as it would most
probably put people off and is not appropriate for
a student magazine which is why we did not use
any jargon in our student magazine. Whereas for
my music magazine I used colours such as red,
grey, white and black as all the colours go well
together and the red will stand out catching the
eye of a reader. We also used simple language
throughout the magazine as established
magazines do, making it easy for readers to read
on the go.
