Colloids are experienced in our daily life. I have presented their applications and the chemistry behind that in this presentation. It will be really helpful for students. I have present this at my college Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, jalandhar for my assessment work.
2. WHAT ARE COLLOIDS?
COLLOIDS….. COAGULATION…….
Colloids and coagulation…
A substance is said to be
in a colloidal state when it
is dispersed in another
medium to form particles
of size between 1nm to
100nm.
5. Blood coagulation……..
Bleeding stops when
ferric chloride solution is
applied to a bleeding
part.This is due to
coagulation of blood by
an electrolyte forming a
blood clot.
7. River water is muddy and contains charge colloidal
particles of clay, sand and other particles.Sea water
contains in it a number of dissolved electrolytes. When the
river water comes in contact of sea water, the electrolytes
present in sea water coagulate the suspended colloidal
particles which ultimately settle down at the point of
contact. As aresult, the level of river bed rises. Thus, there is
formation of delta at point of contact where the river
enters the sea.
Delta formation……
9. Sea water looks green due to scattering of
light by colloidal impurities present in water
Green colour of sky……….
10. Latex is a colloidal solution of negatively
charged colloidal rubber particle.Rubber
can be obtain from latex by coagulation.
These rubber particles can be deposited
Over articles to be rubber plated by
electrophoresis.The article to be rubber
plated is made the anode in the rubber
plated bath.

11. The smoke coming from chimneys in industrial towns
contains a lot of unburnt carbon particles. These are
quite injurious to health and have to be removed from
the smoke.
Smoke is a colloidal system in which carbon
particles are suspended in air.The carbon
particles are charged in nature so they are not
coagulated or precipitated.The precipitation of
smoke particles is carried out by cottrell smoke
precipitator. In these precipitates, the charge on
carbon particles is neutralised by bringing
them in contact with the opppositely charged
plate. Thus they get precipitated and the gases
coming out of chimney are free from smoke.
Smoke precipitator………
12. • A wide variety of medicinal and pharmaceutical preparations are emulsions.
• The colloidal medicines are quite effective because they have large surface area and therefore
these are easily absorbed and assimilated by body cells.
• Hofmeister series provides an idea of order of temperature to which gel must be heated before
transforming into the sol in the presence of anions.
• It is predicted that sulphate, tartarate and citrate ion inhibit the swelling of gels.
• Chloride, nitrite, bromide and iodide favour the imbibition of water.
Colloidal medicines………
13. The drinking water can be purified by precipitation of
suspended colloidal particles. For this purpose,a small
amount of alum is added. The Al3+ ions neutralise the
charge on the particles and they get coagulated.

14. Blue colour of sky………
Blue colour of sky is due to the scattering of
light by colloidal dust particles present in
the air.(Tyndall effect)
