The document discusses the effectiveness of combining a radio advertisement and double page spread as ancillary texts to promote a documentary. It describes the process of creating the double page spread, including researching conventions, taking inspiration from a magazine spread, receiving feedback, and improving the first draft based on a small image and excessive text. Details are provided about the radio advertisement, such as using a formal male voice to set a serious tone in contrast to BBC Three's usual informal female voiceovers.
1. Q2; HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF
YOUR MAIN PRODUCTS AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
2. For our two ancillary tasks, we made a double page spread
and a radio advert
We chose these two ancillary tasks as they would engage
our targeted audience best.
Our radio advert would appeal to our older audience of
parents as they usually listen to the radio
The double page spread was made to appeal to our teenage
audience
3. We decided to follow the conventional features, after
researching the different types of double page spreads.
Our research on double page spreads showed us how
the conventional spread is laid out.
4. The ancillary task was to make a double page spread which
means it has too be two pages and our spread does not have
the line that separates the pages.
The first draft of our double page spread did not follow the
conventions successfully.
This is due to the image being too small and the text took up
too much of the spread.
5. One double page spread in particular caught our eye, it
was from XXL magazine.
The layout was very simple, with the title of the article
on the top left hand side of the spread and the text
below it.
The image covered the right side of the page.
It is neat and simple, so we aspired to make a similar
spread
6. We placed the BBC three logo on the bottom right page as
they are showing our documentary
We used neutral colours in the spread as our documentary
targets both genders.
After looking at this example of a double page spread, we
were then able to produce a better spread
We also received feedback from our targeted audience and
teacher, telling us how to improve it and what they liked
about it.
The double page spread includes interviews with the makers
of the documentary stating why they have made it.
8. Our radio advert includes a formal voice that mentions the
controversial topics that are to be in the documentary
We have used a formal voice for our radio advert
BBC three usually use an informal voice in their adverts as
we wanted to set a serious tone for the documentary
BBC three have used a female voiceover, however, we
have used a male voice as we feel this is more
authoritative
We have used the same voice that is in our main product.
