1. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
My three pieces of media create a representation of gender, class and
youth. For example, my front cover suggests the magazine can be for
both genders because its main content is artist’s information, reviews of
concerts and gigs and information about up and coming gigs and
concerts. However, because of the girl as the main image it will mainly
appeal to the female audience. My contents page I think represents youth
and class because it is reviews of gigs, one to one chats with various
artists and band both old and new which is what mainly the youth want to
see. Also, because indie music is mainly played at festivals and gigs which
cost a lot so it’s more middle upper class that would attend these. In
addition, my double page spread represents youth because of the fact its
a question and answer session which gets to know more about the life of
the front cover artist.
My representation of a music magazine follows all of the required codes
and conventions of what an indie music magazine typically includes.
However, on the front cover of an indie music magazine the cover artist is
usually a band or a male or female of the white ethnicity, but on mine I
decided to use a female who is mixed. I did this so I could reach out to a
wider audience to have an interest in the indie genre.
