3. Introduction:
 Cinema has been the most popular entertainment
source.
 People of all age groups , young and old , women and
children , flocked to the cinema halls in very –
increasing numbers.
 The Indian film industry was considered to be the
largest and richest in the world, second only to that
of Hollywood.
 But now all this has changed owing to competition-
first from black and white TV , then from colour
TV, last of all from VIDEO PIRACY.

5. What is Film Piracy ?
Film piracy is the illegal copying and
distribution of movies in print ,video , DVD and
electronic files so that people can watch films for
cheaper . This process is quit fast and simple . You
can watch films that are not yet released or if you
can’t afford to buy the film legally .
The film piracy began in 1998 and today it is still
easy to access as it takes a minute to find a
pirated movie on internet .Longest piracy prison
sentence was 5 years given to Jeremiah Perkins from
Virginia for running a film download ring called
“IMAGINE “.

6. Factors Responsible For Video Piracy :
 Screening of pirated video films in hotels, clubs, video
coached luxury buses and restaurants etc.
 Video home recordings and mushrooming of video
libraries.
 Growth of cable television.
 Banning of Films creates curiosity to watch the
banned films hence raising demands for pirated
films.
 Sharp drop in cinema-going audience due to the law
and order situation as well as bombs and fire scare
in the theatres
 Availability of pirated CDs/DVDs at a much
cheaper rates than the original video films and
various internet downloading options.

7. Types of film piracy :
 CAM- A recording device used in the audience to
capture the movie . Can contain sound from the
audience over the film.
 TELESYNC- A recorder used in the projection
booth , which syncs the actual sound from the
audio device .
 SCREENER- A trial copy of the film is released
to gather reviews and this is copied but contains
a messages in the middle in the middle of the
screen such as “The film you are watching is a
promotional copy” .

8. A Past Piracy Problem :
In June 1996, the largest ever film piracy affair
in the New York, US was demolished. The
nationwide business sold over 1,00,000 films a
week, earning roughly Rs.33,034,460. The
investigation, nicknamed “Operation Copy Cat”,
ended when search warrants were completed. 36
people were arrested and there were 817 VCR’S,
77641 printed videos, Rs 2,642,757 in case 37,000
blank cassettes, more than 1,00,000 sleeves,
labels and other sophisticated equipment used in
the duplicating process.”

12. A New Invention :
A study published in 2008 found that movie
piracy, cost the environment industry more than
Rs16000 crores annually . In order to overcome
this issue the Engineering students of Electronics
and Communication Department of Tamilnadu,
have developed a device that uses Infrared
Sensors to fight piracy. These Infrared sensors
aare used to detect the piracy done by the
people in theatres.

13. Construction:
The anti movie piracy device is constructed
by using Infrared sensors to fight movie piracy.
These Infrared sensors are used to detect the
piracy done by the people in theatres.
This anti movie piracy device uses 384
infrared light emitting diodes(LED) . These are
arranged in 16 rows and 24 columns with a
screen size of 300mm by 370mm to radiate a
frequency of 43KHz, with 12v, 2 amp DC
power supply.

14. Working:
The Engineer who invented this device ,explains to
“The Times Of India”, when someone attempts to
record a film on the screen using a video camera
or mobile phone ,the radiation emitted by the
device will create OPTICAL WATER
MARKING on the screen. It will blur the
image. Thus, the motion picture image on the
screen is completely blurred, when seen through a
camera, but will be clear for the human eyes.
Only the blurred white image will be captured
in the camera on the other side. So, no more
printed videos, as theatre prints, can be produced
(or) recorded.

the screen.
• Hence, when seen through the electronic
device the image seems to be blurred.

18. Optical Water Marking:
An optical water marking is a two dimensional
binary image. It can be of any shape and can
be printed in any type of the document. The
optical water mark is constructed by the superpo
sition of multiple two- dimensional binary images
each with different structural patterns embedding
various hidden information.
The hidden information becomes visible
to the human eyes only when the right key is
positioned on the top of the optical watermark
with the right alignment.
