The original monumentsof this 11th
-century temple were builtaround a moat. It includedgopura, the
main temple,itsmassive tower, inscriptions,frescoes,andsculpturespredominantlyrelatedto
Shaivism,but also of Vaishnavismand Shaktism traditions of Hinduism.The temple was damagedin
its history and some artwork is now missing.Additional mandapam and monumentswere added in
the centuriesthat followed.The temple now stands amidst fortifiedwallsthat were added after the
16th
century.
