7. History of HVDC
1930s
Efficient static AC/DC conversion (mercury arc valves) was
made possible.
1940s
High Voltage DC (HVDC) bulk power transmission was studied in
Germany.
1954s
First commercial application in Sweden: submarine link between
mainland and Gotland island (100 kV-20 MW-90 km).
1970s
Thyristors (SCRs) took over, HVDC operation voltages attain 600 kV,
transmitted power over 3000 MW.

e.g. different grid frequencies.

economical solution for distances
greater than 600 km.

14. DC Smoothing Reactors
Having a large inductance (0.27H to 1.5H).
Connected in series with the converter before the DC filter.
Main objectives of the reactor.
Filter
AC filter offer low impedance to harmonic frequencies.
DC filters diverts DC harmonics to earth.
High frequency filter is reduce the interference to the power line
carrier communication.
Reactive Source
No reactive power is transmitted over a DC line.
Normally requirement of reactive power is about 50 percent
of transmitted power.

It is not desirable to connect weak networks, characterized

The transmission of bulk power through HVDC is
growing. The recent progress in power electronics
provides a new future for the HVDC technology. The
VSC HVDC is believed to be a strong contender for the
flexible transmission system.
