Future on power electronics for wind turbine systems

  1. 1. FUTURE ON POWER ELECTRONICS FOR WIND TURBINE SYSTEMS
  2. 2. INTRODUCTION •Wind turbine technology is the most promising renewable energy technology. •Started in 1980s with a 4-8 KW production of power per unit. •Today 4.5-8 MW production of power per unit. •Initially no need of power control system to regulate frequency and voltage. •But now control system parameters are necessary part of wind turbine systems.
  3. 3. DEVELOPMENT OF WIND POWER GENERATION
  4. 4. ROLE OF POWER ELECTRONICS
  5. 5. WIND POWER CAN BE GENERATED BY-  Doubly fed induction generator  Synchronous generator
  6. 6. DOUBLY-FED INDUCTION GENERATOR
  7. 7. ADVANTAGES •Low cost of converter •Optimum utilization of energy
  8. 8. DISADVANTAGES •Slip rings •Direct connection to the grid is difficult •The output voltage is dependent on the rotor speed.
  9. 9. SYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR
  10. 10. ADVATAGES • Elimination of slip rings. • Full power
  11. 11. DISADVANTAGES •Expensive electronic components. •Higher power loss
  12. 12. TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES FOR POWER ELECTRONICS IN WIND TURBINE SYSTEMS •Lower level cost of energy •Stability •Higher reliability
  13. 13. FUTURE TECHNOLOGY FOR WIND POWER CONVERSION • Generator and drive train • Power electronics and transformer • Power semiconductor device
  14. 14. CONCLUSION •Last four decades, wind energy is most promising renewable energy •Wind power reduces cost of electric energy. •Use of power electronics system, it may be conventional energy one day. •Lower energy cost, higher reliability and better power integration will push the technology in developments in wind turbine systems.
