1. WISDOM OF THE AGES
NEW AGE SOLUTIONS FOR AGE OLD PROBLEMS
PREFACE
In the realm of Fleet Management, modern business practice demands that all
aspects of transportation operations are controlled for optimal efficiency.
PROBLEMS
Problems are normally systemic in nature and are the result of long term practices.
Management's responsibility is the identification and prioritization of impediments
to progress. Problems may manifest themselves as:
RED FLAG INDICATORS:
1. Costs are unidentified or out of control with no clear plan to realign.
2. Equipment is not at the optimal cost/mile benchmark for your industry.
3. Information systems have become ineffective in the decision making process.
4. Maintenance procedures are mostly reactive and lack future proactive direction.
5. Stakeholders of transportation operations lack strategic partnership philosophy.
SOLUTIONS
Oftentimes, the solutions to problems are inherent but not obvious; with key
components missing or nonexistent. Management's responsibility is to rekindle the
discussion process in order to effect change within the organization. Proper solution
implementations result as:
GREEN FLAG INDICATORS:
1. Costs are identifiable, categorized and controlled on a consistent basis.
2. Equipment is within benchmark standard for mission accomplishment.
3. Information systems yield data that will assist the decision making process.
4. Maintenance procedures are prioritized toward the proactive and preventive.
5. Stakeholders act responsibly to facilitate their action in strategic partnerships.

2. WISDOM OF THE AGES proposes a comprehensive 5 step program to help
mitigate problems and sustain solutions within the Fleet Management organization.
1. ASSESSMENT:
Systemic impediments to operations and optimal efficiency are identified. On-site
investigation, observation, discussion and survey are conducted during this phase.
2. RECOMMENDATION:
Based upon the ASSESSMENT, practical recommendations are proposed for
further discussion. Management intentions regarding operational improvements of
stakeholder actions are critical milestones during this phase.
3. IMPLEMENTATION:
Based upon the agreed RECOMMENDATION, rework of existing procedure or
invention of new procedure is incrementally affected so as to minimize overall
resistance to change.
4. REFINEMENT:
Based upon the IMPLEMENTATION, this phase concerns itself with the fine-
tuning necessary in order to sustain any changes made over time. Reinforcement of
management intentions will clearly define the process for concerned stakeholders.
5. REVISIT:
Based on all the prior phases, this phase is agreed upon by concerned stakeholders
in order to affect future efficiency. The scope of management intentions will be the
overriding philosophy regarding the necessity for continuous improvement.
AGREEMENT
The PROGRAM that the Consultant for WISDOM OF THE AGES envisions is a
20 day project: ASSESSMENT, RECOMMENDATION, IMPLEMENTATION,
and REFINEMENT. REVISIT will be determined by management and
renegotiated by the parties.
