This is a handout I created in support of my presentation for CPTSC 2013: http://cptsc.org/. The handout provides a model for building an engaged academic identity around UX design that spans research, teaching, and service.

Building UX Knowledge within an Engaged University .
As
a
new
assistant
professor
in
the
Technical
and
Professional
Communication
(TPC)
program
at
ECU,
I’m
working
to
inject
knowledge
about
user
experience
design
(UX)
into
the
program,
as
well
as
the
university-‐at-‐large.
Right
now,
the
program
is
strongest
in
technical
writing,
editing,
risk
communication,
health
communication,
web
design,
usability,
and
information
design.
My
main
value-‐adds
will
be
new
user
research
methods
and
new
modalities
of
content
strategy/information
architecture
(e.g.
contextual
inquiry,
field
studies,
persona
development,
wireframes,
sitemaps,
taxonomies,
etc.).
Because
I’m
untenured,
I’m
doing
this
within
the
traditional
frameworks
of
research,
teaching,
and
service.
Below
are
some
of
my
current
projects
and
anticipated
outcomes.
Research .
I’m
currently
at
work
on
two
UX-related
research
projects
• A
content
strategy
and
user
interface
analysis
of
http://ifixit.com
• Persona
development
and
user
testing
of
the
North
Carolina
Coastal
Atlas,
http://www.nccoastalatlas.org/
Anticipated
programmatic
outcomes
of
this
work:
grant
funding;
RAships
for
students;
possible
industry
partnerships
Teaching .
I’m
injecting
UX-related
knowledge
into
the
program
at
two
levels
• Individual
assignments
-‐
e.g.
Editing,
Content
Strategy,
and
Information
Architecture,
http://bit.ly/1coOV3y
• New
classes
-‐
e.g.
a
grad-‐level
class
in
the
spring
on
User
Experience
Design;
for
more
about
this
class,
see
http://slidesha.re/19as98g
Anticipated
programmatic
outcomes
of
this
work:
students
exposed
to
new
knowledge
base;
new
kinds
of
culminating
student
projects
Service/Engagement .
I’m
engaging
stakeholders
across
the
university
and
community
on
two
levels
• Presentations
and
research
partnerships
-‐
e.g.
a
presentation
for
the
library
on
why
they
should
adopt
UX
strategy
in
their
application
development
process;
partnerships
with
city
planners
• Curricular
and
service-‐learning
partnerships
-‐
e.g.
a
business
writing
class
in
which
students
do
content
strategy
with
local
orgs;
industry
partners
for
my
UX
grad
class
Anticipated
programmatic
outcomes
of
this
work:
new
community
and
industry
partnerships;
new
internship
opportunities
for
students;
making
UX
knowledge
available
to
local
organizations
