We as English speakers might know English grammar (if we are lucky) but teaching it is a whole new issue! learn how to teach grammar in your English classroom
2. Class Structure
– When teaching grammar, the PPP method is very helpful and you will often follow this structure when
introducing a brand new grammar topic
– This means that a part of your lesson’s PRE will contain a presentation of the grammar topic, your WHILE
will have practice activities, and your POST will be the production portion.
– Refer to this chart as a visual of how you should run your class
3. Wait a minute, what about
tasks?
– Just because you are using some helpful tools from the PPP method, does not mean
you neglect everything from the task- based approach
– Tasks are still necessary!
– What you might do is structure a PPP class to introduce the new grammar point and then
once they get the structure and you took a class to practice, perhaps the next class your
task uses the grammar topic you introduced in the last class
– Depending on the length of the class and the difficulty of the grammar topic, you can also
fit it all in to 1 class! So for example, the PRE portion of your class includes all the
preparation they need for their class, and also the grammar presentation.
– It is one thing to show them the structure and rules but giving them use and context
will help the remember
4. PRESENTATION
– As mentioned, your presentation of the grammar topic will be in the PRE section of the
class.
– This presentation should be around 10-15 minutes ONLY (20 min MAX)
– This might seem quite short to teach an entire grammar topic, but think about the learning cycle,
there are very important stages you need to reach. If you are explaining for half the class, they
barely get any practice, and it does not allow them to indicate where you need to focus in your
assistance.
– Since it is this short you will notice that you need to SIMPLIFY. Making generalizations and sticking
to what's important is often far better than explaining every intricacy of the grammar topic
– Make sure to concept throughout! At least once every 5 minutes or so to make sure you
don’t reach the end of your 20 minute presentation with blank stares and confusion
5. PRACTICE
– This is where you will have controlled and prompted activities to get them in
the routine of using grammar correctly.
– This might include worksheets, controlled activities and games where there is
some assistance.
– This can also be used to assess the understanding of your students to evaluate if
they need more explanation or you can move on
6. PRODUCTION
– This will be the portion you let them run free with the grammar topic!
– This might also be games or activities but these will force them to use the
grammar topic organically or without thinking so much.
– This might also include specific scenarios or discussion questions in which they
would use the specific grammar topic
7. Things to remember
– You must understand what is involved in the grammatical structures being taught
– So you much understand the intricacies even if you won’t teach them all!
– Always use a lot of examples and have your presentation be interactive
– Ask them questions throughout
– Find a balance between accuracy and simplicity in your presentations
– Generalization is more helpful even if it is not 100% accurate
– A good presentation includes oral and written examples
– Always include fun activities to keep your students engaged
– Use the internet! It’s a great resource for ideas!
