Introduction:
 Plants are incredibly beneficial to indoor workspaces because they
have air purifying qualities. So it is called air purifying indoor plants.
 All plants can act as air cleaners but some are more beneficial than
others beacause it removes toxins like formaldehyde, xylene, tolune
etc. from the air.
Why does indoor air need purifying?
 There are plenty of toxins floating around outside air thanks to
pesticides and herbicides, vehicle fumes, and other industrial
pollutants. Unfortunately, you’ll find a plethora of toxins in the air
inside your own home as well, which are harmful to humanbeings,
pets etc.
 Now -a- days in developing countries people spend 90% of their time
indoors and indoor air has been reported 12 times more polluted than
outdoor in some areas.
Air impurities
 Cleaning products
 Chemical flame retardants
 Formaldehyde
 Fragrances
 Electromagnetic frequencies
 Other toxins
How are these houseplants unique?
 Houseplants are grown indoors, either in residences or offices and
could be tropical, sub tropical or other types. They are used for a
range of reasons like -
1. for healing purposes like air purification,
2. earning positive psychological effects and
3. enhancing the decoration of a room or space.
How do they work?
 Plants absorb air borne polluntants into their leaves and then
translocate them to their root zone, where microbes break them
down.
 Plants use toxins to make glucose and they release breathable
oxygen, which we need to survive.
A list covering a few of air purifying
plants:-
 Bamboo palm
 English ivy
 Boston fern
 Aloe vera
 Snake plant
 Spider plant
 Golden pothos
 Peace lily
 Rubber plant
 African daisy
Bamboo palm(Chamaedora seifrizi)
 Commonly known as
reed palm.
 This is an indoor plant
of (4-15)feet height
which requirs 160 c-24oc
tempreture ,indirect
light.
 These plants effective
at removing chemical
contaminants from the
air like
formaldehyde,benzene,
trichloroethylene.
English ivy (Hedera helix)
 Commonly known as
European ivy or common ivy.
 It is an indoor plant of height
66-98 feet with climbing
habbit and requires bright
indirect light with cool
tempereture and regular
watering.
 It effectively remove
benzene, formaldehyde,
toluene from air and also
reduces air borne fecal
matter.
Bostern fern (Nephrolepsis exaltata)
 This bear feather like
leaves and curve
fronds,well suited for
hanging baskets.
 It can attain a height of
3-7 feet which requires
180c-240c,high humidity.
 It purify pollutant like
more formaldehyde than
other plant.
 It serve as ideal plant
for bathroom.
Aloe vera
 It is commonly known as plant of
immortality.
 It is a sun loving succulent plant
which attains a height of (1-
3)feet.
 It absorbs benzene and
formaldehyde from air.
 It has the unique ability to
release oxygen and absorb carbon
dioxide at night.
Snake plant(Sansevieria trifasciata)
 it is also known as mother in
law’s tongue.
 It has thick fleshy leaves and
attain a height of ( 1-4)feet and
requires low light and steamy
humid condition.
 Filters benzene, xylene,
formaldehyde, trichloroethylene.
 It releases O2 by absorbing CO2
at night.
Spider plant(Chlorophytum comosum)
 C0mm0nly known as air-
plane plants.
 The plants prefers partial
shade, hot dry climate of
650c-750c and can attain a
height of 1-3 feet.
 It absorbs formaldehyde,
benzene, carbon
monoxide.
Golden pothos(Epipremnum aureum)
 Commonly known as money plant, silver
vine, solomon island ivy.
 This plant is a tough one to kill,so
known as devil sighn.
 It is a climber with aerial roots and
attains a height of 66feet and can
tolerate neglect and handle over
watering.
 Absorbes
formaldehyde,CO,benzene,xylene.
Peace lily(Spathiphylum)
 It is a sturdy plant with pointed dark
green leaves and white flowers
which looks like hood of cobra hence
commonly known as cobra plant.
 It’s height ranges from (1-4) feet
which requires 160c-240c
temperature, indirect light and high
humidity.
 It can eliminate several chemicals
like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene,
ammonia.
Rubber plant(Ficus robusta)
 It has wide deep green
and glossy leaves and can
attain a height of 6-10
feet.
 It requires bright filtered
light, moderate
watering, little attention
and 160c-270c
temperature.
 More effective for
removal of formaldehyde
besides this also purifies
amonia, trichoroethylene
and benzene.
African daisy(Gerbera daisy)
 C0mmonly known as jaguar.
 It bears a large capitulum with
yellow, red, white flowers and
attains a height of (8-12)inches.
 It removes trichloroethylene,
benzene and releases O2 by
absorbing CO2 at night.
Advantages
1. Reducing carbon dioxide levels.
2. Increasing humidity.
3. Reducing levels of certain pollutants, such as benzene and nitrogen
dioxide.
4. Reducing air borne dust levels.
5. Keeping air temperature down.
6. Lower background noise.
7. Medicinal value.
Disadvantages
1. Need more care.
2. Some plants need more humidity.
3. S0me plants are toxic to pets and children.
