From a spirituality perspective being able to pin point where you are would be helpful in the journey that is discovering who and whose you are. It’s good to know where you are as you journey to your true self.
Faith development is not a new concept- classic voices of spiritual formation to see grounding and influence - inspired a greater understanding of grow into the fullness of Christ. spiritual maturity and union with God. not capriciousness of psychology but represents a stream of consciousness reflective of the process of maturation or coming to wholeness reaching back to the Cappadocian’s and early church fathers
three stages of development. infancy, where we absorb information; adolescence, where we make sense of what we know through questioning and adulthood, where we have a growing awareness of an inner consciousness relating to God through mystery.
Jamieson, maturing sense of being. visual metaphor of the development of the caterpillar through chrysalis to emergence as a butterfly is helpful.
A maturing person is aware of that which may hold them back in their development and is a sign of being spiritually astute
Janet Hagberg’s stages…
insatiable desire to learn.. The charismatic leader still wields immense influence. rigidness in righteousness which is sustained by a 'we against them' attitude that is seen in a resistance to any thinking outside what is seen as correct.
Great value is placed upon symbols or form with a need to achieve perceived spiritual goals. Moving on comes from a variety of sources including a loss of certainty that can come from experiencing personal/ faith crisis or feeling abandoned or recognising the need to look for direction. The catalyst for moving on can come from an acceptance of vulnerability and a letting go success
embracing the paradox - very least open to the possibility of allowing for a new certainty in God. The search for self = moving away from ego dominated thinking opens the meaning of the true cost of obedience. Starting point of seeking wholeness through personal healing and pilgramage and moving forward.
After the unsettlement and disorientation of what Hagberg calls ‘the wall’, she suggests that we are turned inside out and unmasked in order that an unconditional love can emerge. characterised through vocation shaped by genuine concern and focus on others. . Discovering a glimpse of God's purpose in life in all things - Fullness and being whole seems to be enough allowing vocation to be fulfilling.
The sense of journeying out for others. The and the consequent disregard for self sees a detachment from things and stress. This is the utter poured out life of love that knows no boundaries.
