I. Introduction
In our country, a large percentage of our economy is dominated by the use of
fossil fuels that have generated development and at the same time pollution not
only affecting us by their high costs or in our health but also to our ecosystem.
Today we are committed to fight against climate change and we are working on
renewable energy generation projects, clean energies that reduce greenhouse
gas emissions and for this we need data, new methodologies, more accurate and
modern information systems to incorporate these new energy sources and thanks
to the technology of programs or software such as RETScreen Expert allow us
to make complex calculations or process new information that serve in making
decisions of energy managers helping us as a method of investment and that are
viable.
II. What is RETScreenExpert?
It is a clean energy management software tool, allowing students and
professionals to analyze and plan energy production projects for research
purposes.
It is developed by the Government of Canada with a group of collaborators
guaranteeing as a method of investment and decision making evaluating the
feasibility of renewable energy projects and optimizing costs.
It has energy models, information analysis and databases such as costs and
climatological data through satellite information generated by NASA
III. Importance of RETScreen Expert
This software allows us to take advantage of algorithms to simplify decision-
making on energy projects such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and
cogeneration in combination with various databases.
It helps us to determine from a financial point of view whether an investment
project is profitable or not. This profitability is guaranteed for a long-term period.
It reduces implementation and installation costs by measuring energy
performance.
It is a tool for public and private utilities with a user-friendly methodology.
IV. Software procedure
Simulation for the Marcona Wind Farm with RETScreen Expert software.
We select in Type of Installations, GENERATION PLANTS.
We can go to the Configuration tab to change the language and change the type
of currency, in this case we are going to use for our Country, soles currencies
and the Spanish language.
We select where it says LOCATION and in METEREALOGIC DATA
LOCATIONS, we are going to choose the power plant, in this case we want to
locate the Marcona-Ica wind power plant and click on the MAP image.
A new window will pop up, register in the Marcona Magnifying Glass and select
Marcona-Peru, and paste data.
The map will be adjusted to the desired location.
Let's go to the INSTALLATION section to enter the data of our control panel.
Description: Marcona.
Prepared by: Student
Prepared for: Teacher
This section defines the selling point in wind energy costs.
In the Energy section we select electricity and choose wind turbine which is what
we want to analyze as the wind speed.
We can see in electricity a new window where we select the type of wind turbine
to analyze the project, we can see that there are 3 levels: Level 1: Less
information for the project, Level 2: Intermediate information and Level 3
which is for more information, in this case we select Level 2 and the software
shows us the climatological data of the region as temperature, wind speed, shear
and select 0.28 which is the coefficient that is the wind obstacles that can be
natural or man-made as houses, buildings or shrubs.
Average annual wind speed, are the location data that gives us the average
annual wind speed and we can see in the climatological data that gives us the
software.
Peru San Juande Marcona is a weather station that measures the climatological
parameters for the city of Marcona.
Annual wind speed 6.5.
In Marcona by information we know that they use wind turbines Vestas model
and as in the region there are 18 wind turbine units, we look for the corresponding
model and we are going to paste data.
On the right-hand side, we can see power curve data in relation to the wind speed
0-25 m/s. Each point of wind generator speed gives us a power.
As we define the manufacturer's model, the software gives us the complete data
as you can see in the image.
In the graph we can observe the maximum power of the wind turbine, we can
observe a curve of 1800 KW and that at 5m/s it has a power of 165 KW, at 11
meters power 1752KW and at 14m/s 1800 KW.
In graph loss, we have no data so we go to the software and it gives us values
from 0-20%, we choose 2% and in availability it has values from 93-98%, we
choose 95.
In summary, we see resource evaluation, the software already calculated the
plant factor.
In initial costs we can see the investment of soles per kilowatt and the operation
and maintenance costs.
The operating costs are the useful life of the plant installation when it is already
generating energy and these costs are for operators, vans, secretary.
If the plant is 10-100 megawatts the cost varies in 64-75, we choose 75 costs.
The values it gives us on a 10-megawatt basis is 2500 and for a 100-megawatt
plant it is 2100, so if it is an investment, we prefer to use a high value to have a
less optimistic estimate.
Export tariff is what the wind power plant sells its energy to the electricity sector,
which is 0.10.
The plant factor is 59.5%, which is the hourly availability of the plant, meaning
the number of hours the plant can produce electricity.168,820 megawatts per
hour.
Let's go to the COSTS section
Emission window means that power generation plants generate greenhouse
gases and if we use a wind project there is a compensation for the plant to stop
emitting greenhouse gases.
The credit rate varies from 168 dollars per ton for each barrel, so the power plant
would receive 94,854 dollars per barrel to stop emitting greenhouse gases.
In the Finance section we will find how the energy projects are not financed with
the capital that the owners of the company have, but they take it to the bank, this
loan is called debt ratio, which is the financing by the bank and the remaining
shareholders will want a remuneration with a higher interest rate, this is called
discount rate, we can also see the life time of the project.
Every project will generate profits, and there is a 30% income tax.
This software thanks to the values we can see if our project is profitable or not,
for example, we can see with our data this project would be profitable as it would
have great profits, we can see the cash flow also this program would also save
us time by the use of Excel, the software works quickly.
