• Duration 7-Year
• £3.5 million contract extension
• Project Deadline 31 March 2009
• Arqiva to replace existing legacy radio:
Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL)
Full Voice Traffic recording
Remote Network Management
Full Asset Tracking System

New Radio System
• 1,800 x buses of twenty-six different varieties.
• 11 x TWM Depot sites.
• 200 x hand-portable radios used by inspectors.
• 7 x Hill Top Radio Sites.
Project Make-up
• Arqiva Business Unit is the Client
• Arqiva E&I acting as Project Management
• Arqiva Field Operations is Principal Contractor
– Day-Shift = Hill Top Radio Sites
– Night-Shift = Bus Radio Swaps

Radio Replacements at Coventry…
• Phase 1 – Coventry Garage
• Upgrade of over 130+ vehicle mounted radios
• Upgrade the local HTS Radio System
• Garage based Dispatcher Computer
Just to make things more complicated…
• ACIS RTPI vehicle mounted computers
• Arqiva to Install 130+ vehicles with:
– ACIS DT125 Computer
– VHF Flat Panel Aerial on roof
– GPS Dome Aerial on roof

What Went Well?
• Speed of ACIS Antenna fits!
• Speed of Arqiva Radio Installs!
• Dedication of Night-Shift Team.
• “Can-Do” attitude of Senior Engineer.
• Good support from E&I Team at Romsley.
• Strong Technical fault-finding by Field Ops
Day-Shift team, to resolve System issues.
• Good on-going support from VICoE.
• Good planning prior to start:
– Pre-manufactured Cables
– Radio Brackets & Jigs etc.

Lessons Learned…?
• Key Radio performance has been inconsistent!
• Key Radios supplied with a 470 Ohm Resistor
which interfered with the TWM RS485 Installation!
• Key Radio slippages have impacted on Field Ops
ability to complete entire project on time.
• A number of UAT/SAT issues which Key Radio
are still trying to resolve.
• Field Ops had to perform two KM3000 swaps-outs
• Quality of ACIS Antenna fits not good enough!
• Patchy Quality of ACIS installations by Field Ops.
8. TWM Radio Refresh – Summary
What’s left to do…
• Field Operations to exchange all bus Radios again after Coventry SAT
• 6 x Hill Top Radio Sites to be upgraded before end of March 2008
• 10 x Garage Dispatcher PCs to be installed before end March 2008
• 1,600 x Bus Radios to be upgraded in less than 12 months
• Project Completion Deadline – 30 March 2009

For these opportunities to be successful
we must learn from the TWM Project and
change the way we approach this work!
