Shining Bright
Jim dedicated the past 16 years to making a difference at Sarah Reed, and we are all very grateful for the
many significant advancements he's made for our agency and the 2,100 children we serve annually and
their families. During his leadership, Jim successfully planned the strategic direction of the organization,
expanded programs to meet community demands for children’s mental/behavioral health services, and
ensured that the agency’s short- and long-term financial management needs were met.
"While many CEOs have had the one ability to develop great strategic plans, Jim was one CEO that
always delivered on the objectives,” said Sarah Reed Board Chair William Miller, III. “I am honored to
have worked with Jim during some of the agency’s most extraordinary times.”
Jim was instrumental in several transformational projects totaling $18 million, including a capital
campaign at the main Residential Campus that resulted in a new Administrative Building, the Leslie
Medical Center, the B&L Dining Hall, and Susan Hirt Hagen Hall. He is also responsible for the
acquisition and renovation of the former Hamilton School, which houses the Partial and Acute Partial
Hospitalization Programs and the new Sanctuary for Integrated Health & Wellness Park. Jim also led
the efforts to construct Sarah Reed’s newest 12-bed residential unit, James N. Herr Hall, which opened in
2019 and is meeting the increasing demand for intensive 24-hour care for children ages 5-18.
Jim is a life-long resident of Erie. He graduated from Mercyhurst College (now University) in 1974 with
a B.A. in history and holds an advanced certificate in finance. He will continue to reside in Fairview with
his wife, Cindy. Thank you, Jim, for shaping Sarah Reed into the first-class agency that it is today!
Jim Mando announced his
retirement in June after 16
years of service to the
agency. Over the years,
Jim has successfully led
Sarah Reed through
several transformational
improvements totaling $18
million. All of us wish Jim
the very best!

Sarah Reed Welcomes Adrienne Dixon, Ph.D. as New President/CEO
Fall 2020
Sarah A. Reed Children's Center
"Throughout my tenure with the agency, I've had the opportunity to work in virtually every level of
care. I believe my commitment and dedication to multiple aspects of the organization’s operation,
programming, finances and staff development – along with my acute clinical and interpersonal
abilities – have positioned me to contribute immensely to the success of Sarah Reed."
Adrienne Dixon, Ph.D.
President/CEO
Dr. Dixon represents the agency on numerous boards at the local, state and regional level, including: the
Northern Pennsylvania Regional College Board of Trustees, the Children’s Advocacy Center Board, the Erie
Migrant Head Start Advisory Board, the Erie County Community Development Board, and the Greater
Calvary Human Service Board. As a faculty member in the counseling program at Edinboro University, she
serves on the President’s Diversity Council and is co-chair of the Frederick Douglass Advisory Committee.
The entire Sarah Reed family congratulates Dr. Dixon on her new role!
Prior to becoming the President/CEO of Sarah Reed, Dr. Dixon served as the agency’s associate vice president of residential and
community services for the past 18 years. She has over 35 years of clinical experience as a professional counselor and administrator.
Dr. Dixon plans to build on the Children’s Center’s vision of trauma focused, client-centered treatment for children, families and adults
struggling with emotional and behavioral challenges. She anticipates developing community partnerships that explore new ways to
deliver innovative, quality behavioral health care that promotes a culture of wellness.
Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center’s Board of Directors announced that they have selected Dr. Adrienne Dixon to serve as the agency’s
President/CEO following the recent retirement of former President/CEO James D. Mando.
“The Board is proud to welcome Dr. Dixon as the next President/CEO of Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center,” said Board Chair William
Miller, III. “Dr. Dixon has been making a difference at Sarah Reed for 32 years. She understands all the different aspects of this agency
and most importantly, she understands the needs and the challenges of the children, adults and families we serve."
3. Due to social distancing, the children remained in their
residential units for the 2020 Summer Reading & Math
Program rather than receiving in-person education at the
former Ridgefield Elementary School as we had done in past
years. The program took place June 17th - August 12th and
the children and staff relied heavily on Chromebooks for the
students' math, reading and psychoeducational lessons.
Thanks to our generous donors who contribute through the
Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program, Sarah Reed
had a head start on the technology that would become crucial
to navigating COVID-19. With the help of our donors, we'd
already secured 62 Chromebooks by April 2020, which
created a more seamless transition to remote learning.
The agency recently launched the 150th Anniversary
Technological Initiative to raise funds to equip all of our
students, staff and campuses with the technology they need
during this time. If you're interested in making a gift
towards this effort, please visit www.SarahReed.org/donate
or call (814) 835-7602.
Virtual Art Show Still On Display for Community
Each year, the children in our Residential Program host an art show for their peers and
staff in the B&L Dining Hall on the grounds of our Residential campus in Millcreek. This
year, our Art and Recreation Department staff worked their magic and successfully
uploaded all 171 creations so that we could share the children's artwork with you for our
first Virtual Art Show! If you haven't had a chance to see the artwork yet, it's still
available to view at bit.ly/SarahReedArtShow.

In June, Erie Arts & Culture solicited artwork from Erie
County youth in response to one question, “How are you
feeling?” Our students submitted 42 pieces of art ranging
from original works to coloring book pages to convey their
emotions. Visit www.erieartsandculture.org/sarah-reed
to see their submissions. Special thanks to Erie Arts &
Culture for arranging this creative opportunity!
Children and staff had a blast during the Slippin' & Slidin' Activity
Day on July 30th! This much-needed day of fun and sun was made
possible thanks to a generous gift from a parent donor and was one of
the many 6 Feet Apart 2020 activities at Residential this summer.

Chromebooks every day, and
we've had a lot less
behavioral issues this year
during the Summer Program.
The Chromebooks and the
educational software we use
allow each student to work
at his or her own pace. Some
of our younger students are
currently learning to read by
listening to audiobooks, and
we have older students
working on calculus and
studying for the SATs!"

4. Staff Member John Kathman Transforms Hamilton Hallway
At first glance you may think you're walking through the National
Aquarium in Baltimore or scuba diving off the coast of California.
That's the power of John Kathman's artistic abilities as he
transforms our Hamilton hallway into an underwater paradise! John
began this project in April 2020 and is continuing to work on it
throughout the school year.
Special thanks to John for sharing his talents with us and creating a
breathtaking space for students and staff to enjoy!
This summer Sarah Reed staff members collected books,
clothing, appliances, toys and more for the first ever Sarah's
Great Giveaway, which was held August 9th in the parking lot of
our Outpatient Program at the Professional Building. The items
were free for the community, and the response was so positive
that we plan to have another event in Spring 2021! Pictured here

Kelli Denial, and Mandy Longstreth.
Special thanks to all of our donors and volunteers who
made Sarah's Great Giveaway a success!

ERIE
In lieu of our annual employee picnic at Waldameer Park & Water
World this year, we showed our staff appreciation by raffling off gift
baskets and gift certificates from local Erie businesses. Every day
during the first two weeks of August, employee names were drawn and
each staff member won a prize. We want to thank our local businesses
for their donations and discounts they extended to us. Their support
helped us recognize our employees who do an amazing job every day!

JOB AND UP TO THE CHALLENGE OF
HELPING THEM OVERCOME THEIR
TRAUMA."
Darleen is a part-time clinical care staff
member at our Residential campus. She
typically works weekends and enjoys
her flexible schedule. Her love of
working with youth who have
experienced trauma brought her to Sarah
Reed almost a year ago. Since starting,
Darleen feels that she is able to have a
direct impact on the children receiving
treatment and loves that she can build
rapport with each child. She feels valued
and appreciated, and she loves the open
communication across the agency.

With the onset of COVID-19, many of our programs were forced to move to a virtual platform in accordance
with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services guidelines. In order to meet the new social distancing
regulations and cover the unexpected and ever-growing costs that are associated with our new provision of
therapeutic care and education, we've developed the 150th Anniversary Technological Initiative.
Contributions to this fund will help us meet the overwhelming new demand for a wide range of educational
and medical technology to keep everyone safe,

Our Donors Make a Difference
Our Erie Gives Day donors set a new record this year! We had a grand total of $18,394
that was raised by donors who either gave online through ErieGives.org or directly to
Sarah Reed. Plus, we had donors who secured matching gifts from the great companies
they work for, like Erie Insurance, First National Bank of PA, Accudyn Products, Inc.
and Highmark Health! Every dollar will benefit the children and families we serve, and
a majority of the gifts will be used towards the 150th Anniversary Technological
Initiative. Thank you to everyone who supported us this year!
