Position Description:
This grant-funded position serves as an assistant to the manager of the Library Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing in
providing programs and services relating to deafness and hearing loss. This includes, but is not limited to assuming direct
responsibility for providing in-depth reference and circulation services to the public; website maintenance; program
development and implementation, as assigned; assuming primary responsibility for collection acquisitions; providing sign
language interpreting services for the library system; performing general administrative duties; and serving as a liaison to
community agencies and organizations.
Major Job Responsibilities
• Provides direct library reference and circulation services to the public, on the telephone and in-person, to people who are
hearing, hard of hearing, D/deaf, and Deaf-blind
• Participates in the development and promotion of the program
• Develops and presents programs to the staff and public regarding subjects relating to LSDHH, deafness and hearing loss
• Assumes primary responsibility for LSDHH collection acquisitions
• Keeps abreast of current developments and trends
• Performs general administrative duties including keeping accurate records, submitting daily financial reports, ordering
supplies, writing narrative and statistical reports and letters
• Keeps accurate records
• Serves as an “authority” in the field of deafness and hearing loss
• Functions as the person-in-charge in the absence of supervisor
• Actively participates in updating the LSDHH website which includes databases of information, a calendar of events, and
more
• Responsible for dissemination and monitoring of information about the program via social media
• Assumes primary responsibility for the development of publications including the Tennessee Directory of Services for
People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and LSDHH Media Resources Catalog
• Adheres to Library Customer Service Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
• Two (2) years of experience working with the public
• Demonstrated proficiency in use and knowledge of American Sign Language and interpreting
• Demonstrated proficiency of oral and written communication skills
• Valid “Class D” driver’s license
Preferred Knowledge/Abilities/Experience:
• Master’s Degree
• Degree in a field relating to hearing loss (e.g. Deaf Education, Special Education, Sign Language Interpreting,
Audiology, Speech Pathology, etc.)
• RID/NAD Sign Language Certification
• Telephone & In-Person Reference experience
• Knowledge of reference techniques; ability to research and answer questions
• Experience in writing clear and accurate reports
• Experience in program development
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
• Ability to learn and utilize publishing, database, and website software
