2. *February 1685 → James II succeeded to the throne.
*James‘ first parliament was dominated by loyal
Tories.
3. -April 1687 → James suspended penal laws
against Catholic
-Summer of 1687 → James formally dissolved his
parliament.
-James regarded support for the formal repeal of
the Test Acts
-James aimed to produce a parliament which
would agree to the king’s wishes
4. At first passive resistance
- An Anglican campaign against James
II´s religious policies
Then Dutch leader, William of Orange
was contacted
5. Two factors urged William to intervene militarily:
1° James´ Catholic second wife fell
pregnant
2° The Parliament that James planned
to summon in the autumn would repeal
the Test Acts
7. On 26 November-> James discovered that
his daughter, Princess Anne, absconded to
join the Orangist side.
James was willing to agree to William’s
main demand: to call a “free” parliament.
On 23 December-> James successfully fled
the country
8. William & Mary were offered the crown.
They were presented with a Declaration of
Rights
9. Declaration of Rights:
- The illegality of prerogative suspending
and dispensing powers
- The prohibition of taxation without
parliamentary consent
- The need for regular parliaments
- No excesive punishment against the law
(Tolerant Act)

- over the royal succession
- over appointments
- over the rights of the
crown to wage war independently
