Film opening analysis nightmare 1
1. Film Opening Analysis – Nightmare on Elm Street
The first thing that we see is Freddie himself, however in the whole opening
scene we never see his face it Is only partof him like his hands or legs. This
makes the character very mysterious and a bit scarier. The opening scene is
showing how Freddiebecame who he is by him making his claws. This sets a
very creepy and mysterious tone for the restof the film. As you see him
making the claws the desk at which he works atis very messy and unorganised
which tells the audience thathe may be unsuccessfulin what he does. There is
some high pitch noises in the background butyou can mainly hear Freddie
breathing heavily or grunting which creates an eerie scene. When Freddieis
firstintroduced the audience automatically knows that there is something not
quite right abouthim due to the fact that you can never see his face and that
you can hear him making strangenoises. The fact that he is making claws to
wear gives him an in human quality about Freddiewhich makes the audience
fear him right fromthe beginning.
The editing is at a reasonablepace with there being 14 cuts in the opening two
minutes. Itstarts off slower with watching Freddie make the claws and
watching how he does it, which shows that this is a very important part of the
film as we haveto pay most of our attention to it. Also there is a quick scene
whereFreddie is cutting through a sheet and someoneis screaming in the
background. Thecamera is positioned below the claws to show the power of
them and what damage that they could do.
I like the fact that you cannot see Freddie’s face which gives an eerie feel about
the character and I would like to usethis in my film opening.
