Evaluation - question 1
1. In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
My filmmainly conforms to the conventions of a Sci-fi/thriller film. When an audience goes
to watch a Sci-fi/thriller film they expect to see a build-up of suspense with dramatic music
and lots of cuts during a short space of time, they also will expect sound effects, some
thrillers also like to involve hand held camera work to make it feel like you are in the group
of following behind within the scene. They will also have to try and figure out the mystery
and the ‘puzzle’ of the film while they follow the
protagonist till they manage to restore equilibrium; in
this case eradicate the aliens from earth.
Throughout my film I used my pre-production research
helped me to plan where I wanted my shots and how I
wanted them to come out. This helped me to decide
what I was going to do with my protagonist character
to keep them hidden behind of the camera so that the audience is always thinking who they
are, why are they there and what are they doing and
whilst doing watching my actor.
In the two minute opening I straight away introduced
my main character, he has lived in a built up suburban
area for his whole life we can see this from my first
shot where we are set straight away in a built up area,
this shot is to show how the area he has been living is derelict and deserted by everyone
else and that he is all alone, I took inspiration for this shot from I Am legend with them main
character alone in the town/city walking in the centre of the shot ‘looking’ for others. I like
this shot because it really sets the scene of where the character is and the situation he is in.,
these shot types are typical in any film to set the scene and allow the audience to become
orientated and lets them know straight away what the filmis about.
After I finished putting all my clips together I added
sound effects of ‘alien invasions’ and gun shots this
conforms to the conventions of Sci-fi films as without
the sound FX in my filma lot of my film wouldn’t make
sense. I then also added a negative effect; I got this
idea from the film Predator where the main ‘alien’ could see in
thermal vision. However I was able to use thermal vision so I
changed my clips into negative on premier pro to show where the
‘alien’ was looking and their view of my actor.
2. I created my title sequence in after effects; I chose to make it how it is because the title of
my filmis called ‘The Following’, and the words come up as if something is slowly coming
out from being the darkness from left to right as if someone is ‘following’ the title. However
I only used a simple font at I didn’t want the title to look over the top, so I tried to just keep
it simple but I feel that it was effective.
