Postponing or Aborting a Lane Change
1. Postponing or Aborting a Lane
Change
During this activity you are the driver of the red car.
2. What problems do you have?
Moving into a truck’s blind spot (The
NO ZONE) is a really bad idea!
The black car is moving into the center
lane!
How do you solve the problems?
Postpone: Wait until space on the right
is open and stable.
3. Blind spot is occupied/closed
How do you solve it?
Adjust speed slightly to create open space
to the side.
What’s the Problem?
4. Fast approaching vehicle is passing, an
unstable rear zone
What’s your solution?
Wait for the vehicle to pass.
What’s the Problem?
5. Too little space in the front.
How do you solve it?
More following time is needed.
Adjust speed slightly to create open space to
the front.
What’s the Problem?
6. What’s the Problem?
In heavy traffic there may not be a big enough
gap to move into.
How do you solve the problem?
Use your signal; ask cooperation from the driver
to your rear.
They may say yes, reducing their speed and
opening a gap for you. If so, hooray! Remember
the gift and pass it on to others
They may say no – don’t stress about it; cancel
signal, adjust speed, get open side position at
another gap and ask again.
Danger!
This communication dance can be a distraction; keep control over
the front zone. Make 1/3 second glances to the mirror, and
separate each glance with a look to the front zone. Your speed
and your position are your top priorities!
7. Approaching an intersection
Unable to complete your lane
change before entering
What’s your solution?
Evaluate conditions for lane
change
Control the intersection
Exit intersection before attempting
the lane change
What’s the Problem?
8. What’s the Problem?
Vehicle attempting to enter traffic;
unstable left front zone
What’s your solution?
Wait for a better time to change
lanes.
Give the black car space.
Editor's Notes
Can the driver of the semi see the black car? If the driver of the black car can see the rear view mirror or the truck the driver can see that car.
