Document Scope
This document is intended as a companion to Aspen
Aerogel’s technical submission for the combined cold
conservation and passive fire protection of valves and
flanges on the BASF Antwerp facility.
Cryogel Z is simpler and faster to apply than
conventional cryogenic insulation with the added value
creator of providing ‘no wait’ passive pool and jet fire
protection at cold conservation thicknesses.

Protection
Cryogel Z occupies a fraction
of the space of conventional
insulations, supporting clash-
free installations.
A single Cryogel Z blanket can
insulate any valve size, reducing
logistics cost and complexity.
Cryogel Z resists mechanical
damage during transport and
application, minimizing waste.

Contraction Joint Free Construction, seams are simply taped with compatible vapor sealing tape.
For a n-layer system, a 100% continuous, sealed vapor barrier should be present at n, n-2 and n-4 layers.

Value Driver
Constructability
Cryogel Z remains flexible even at deep cryogenic temperatures,
this unique feature allows for the elimination of costly and complex
contraction joints. By dispensing with this weakspot typical in plants
constructed with rigid insulations, construction is accelerated and
the potential for delays during commissioning are reduced.
Cryogel’s multi layer application delivers a thin, fault tolerant
installation that can be removed & reused for maintenance and
inspection.

Cryogenic Value
Driver Toughness
Cryogel’s intuitive and fault tolerant installation method is ideally
suited to offsite pre-insulation to lower project costs however the
insulated module or pipe must survive the arduous transport to
the construction site intact to deliver real value. Cryogel’s unique
composition delivers a resilient protection unaffected by impact,
vibration, and weather during transport and staging.
The photo below was taken during the construction of a 3 Km
(1.86 miles) ethylene loading line in Europe. Note preinsulated
pipe supports also based on Cryogel Z.

Performance
The 3 KM line was commissioned without problems and after 6
months operation the pipe remained ice-free. Furthermore the
operator reported a lower temperature gain than designed for.

Cryogel Z’s was selected to insulate more than 1500 valves and
flanges, 2 inch and greater on a floating LNG import terminal.
Cryogel Z was implemented in thicknesses ranging from 70mm to
110mm to resolve clashes and to overcome supply / logistical issues
with a conventional insulation.
All clashes were resolved ahead of schedule and Cryogel has
operated without problems.
