sleek-geek
Education is drowning in 100 year old teaching practices full of paperwork --
and now even with all the tech communication of data is slow and inefficient so we need of a transformation.
We are sleek-geek, a teacher-led edutech company rebooting education by building the next generation of mobile learning apps.
We leverage tech to open up communication and increase efficiency and accountability, which all directly tie to student achievement
sleek-geek targets all stakeholders. Our apps close the communication and learning gaps among all stakeholders by putting data in everyone’s pocket.
We target schools and districts, because by 2017 schools are projected to spend 21 Billion in ed tech alone.
We target innovative teachers looking for those powerful stand-alone solutions to help them manage their class
And, of course, we target students and parents, because we want to be part of that empowerment process so that they know how to help themselves and each other, in real time.
How are we doing this?
First we’ve rebooted Literacy
The first baby we built is Read With Me, a reading fluency assessment platform
This is important because today the US is lags 14th behind other industrialized countries in reading achievement, but research shows that if practiced regularly and monitored effectively, reading fluency increases reading comprehension overall. Schools all over the world understand this.
Read With Me works by syncing two mobile devices. The iPad app allows for video recording of the assessment. Videos are actually my favorite feature because I love to watch my students’ eyes light up when they watch themselves read and realize their mistakes.
So while the student is reading, the teacher is marking the errors on their device, increasing efficiency by automating the calculation and reporting.
Furthermore, Read With Me is fully customizable. I can use any text I need to personalize reading fluency assessments, unlink any other reading assessment tool. Reports can also be shared with parents and other educators to keep everyone connected.
RWM gives teachers up to 50% more time that they are not spending on the copy machine, or sifting through binders and calculating word per minute. Instead, teachers have more time to spend on meaningful conversations, or to plan and deliver that personalized instruction students need to succeed.
And we are very excited, because in 8 moths Read With Me has grown to 100,000 users with virtually very little marketing. In other words, users are coming to us.
Read with me is now all over the world, from New Zeland to Norway.
We are on iTunes, the web, and several online learning communities like Edmodo. We are bringing our suite of solutions to platforms where teachers, parents, students are on around the world.
Let’s face it. Tablets and mobiles are inevitable at this point. Last year 35% of tablet sales went to schools. That means that in 2012, 3.5 million devices were sold to schools-- That’s an increase of 340% from 2011, and by years end, the numbers are projected to double to 7 million.
So sleek-geek has big plans. We are not just a one-app company. We are an app-pipeline. This year we are also piloting Yooply, our all-in-one solution for student conduct management, and administrators are already waiting to get this into theirs schools.
Next year we are also building Read With Me Premium, going beyond assessments into a full-blown instructional tool, built for the mobile classroom, group reading and more.
Then there is Core Math Jam. The coolest, student-driven, crowdscoring platform aligned to the Common Core.
By 2019 we want sleek-geek apps in 10,000 schools and on all major platforms.
And by diversifying our revenue model from app store downloads to fremium models, to school and district licenses, we are sure to reach our revenue goal of 24 M by year 5.
To get there we are going to need seed funding. We need to recruit that dream-team marketing machine to keep building strategic partnerships with districts and schools. We need mobile engineers to expand into more platforms and to build all those features teachers are asking for. And finally, we need more content creators to make our apps more engaging and innovative.
Which is why we are here in the first place, to bring more engaging and innovative content to students.
We know what works in education, and we also know what hurts. We have been putting technology and digital tools in front of teachers, admins and students for years now. Our direct experience gives our apps and our team our edge.
Here is Francisco Nieto, a hybrid teacher iOS developer who has been teaching in Oakland and the East Bay for 14 years.
And JeanCarl Bisson, our lead engineer and serial hackathon winner at Google, AT&T Microsoft and more.
And I’m Reina Cabezas, a technology teacher and 1:1 implementation specialist in Oakland’s Fruitvale district.

Which brings us to what we are all about, making engaging apps for everyone, because we know what works and what hurts in our schools. We’ve spent years curating content, putting apps and educational technology tools in front of students and teachers. This direct experience is what gives our team and our apps our edge.
The tools we are building are solving real school needs by benefiting learning, which is why we got in this business in the first place.
