Blended learning combines online digital media with traditional in-person classroom methods. It supports 21st century learners by promoting independent learning, flexibility, and personalized education while developing digital skills. However, blended learning also faces challenges related to ensuring connectivity, differentiation for varied learning styles, sustaining student motivation, and accessibility.

Hello everyone!
My name is Franchesca Salas and today I will be discussing what blended learning is and what are some of the benefits and challenges associated with it.
Blended learning is the combination of using traditional face-to-face instruction, whether the instruction is performed in person or online, and the use of digital learning tools to help enhance and improve the learning experiences and outcomes for our students. A common misconception about blended learning is that people associate blended learning with the idea of teachers teaching students about computers and technology and how to use it. That’s not what blended learning is. Blended learning is the process of using technology as a tool to help assist students in becoming independent learners by providing them with various options to learn in ways that best fits them and their learning needs. For example, a teacher wouldn’t hand a student a textbook and tell them to “educate themselves” correct? This same phrase applies with blended learning. We can’t expect to hand our students a computer and tell them to educate themselves. It just won’t work and it will not produce efficient results. (TEDx Talks, 2014)
Why should you practice blended learning?
Supports 21st Century Learners
One of our missions as educators is to empower our 21st century learners and guiding them to utilize the tools around them to prepare them for the world. Employers want workers who know how to code, create presentations, create an excel spreadsheet and so much more. By choosing to blend our instruction with technology, we’re providing our students with the practice needed in order to be prepared for the working environment.
Supports the shift of an educator being less of an instructor and more a facilitator.
By doing this, it emphasis on empowering our learners with the skills and knowledge required to make the most of their digital materials, active learning activities and independent study time by guiding our learners through experience. (MBR University, 2019)
Promotes independent learning
Develops digital skills
Promotes time flexibility by allowing learners to access their work, references, or materials at any time.
Educators are able to provide students with a variety of mixed media to increase student engagement and provide them with multiple options to learn in the best way that fits their learning style and needs.
It removes geographical barriers and allows students to learn in a safe environment that promotes collaboration with students from different classes, institutions and countries
Blended learning can be personalized in order to meet each students’ individual learning needs
(Blended Learning Consortium, 2020)
With all great things we try to implement in our classrooms to make improvements and enhance our students learning experiences, there are its challenges. Some challenges to consider with blended learning are:
Connectivity
To start off, it’s important to consider if devices are available for teachers and students and if there are connectivity options available to the internet in order to run the sessions correctly.
Differentiation
To ensure levelness and differentiation, the instruction needs to be relevant to the appropriate level for individual learners.
Motivation
It’s important to keep in mind that not all students are likely to stay engaged independently while using technology. Preparing motivational tactics will come in handy in times like this.
Accessibility
To ensure that all students accommodations and modifications are met, we need to ensure that the technology tools being utilized have accessibility options.(Blended Learning Consortium, 2020)
Thank you for your time! I hope that today’s short discussion gave you more insight into what blended learning is and how it can benefit you and your students in your classroom. If you’re looking for suggestions for free learning programs that you can use in your classroom, please fill out the Google Forms link that was shared on today’s presentation slide and I’ll be sure to set up a time with you to discuss these options. Thank you again for your time and have a great day!
