Evolution
The concept and study of evolution
HOMINID
• Hominid – the group consisting of all
modern and extinct Great Apes (that
is, modern humans, chimpanzees,
gorillas and orang-utans plus all their
immediate ancestors).
4 types of Hominid
1. Sahelanthropus
2. Ardipithecus
3. Australeupithecus
4. Homo
Sahelanthropus
• Also known as Sahelanthropus tchadensis is one
of the oldest known species in the human family
tree. This species lived sometime between 7 and
6 million years ago in West-Central Africa. Their
height is almost the same as chimpanzee and
their brain size is about 320 to 380 cubic
centimeters.
Sahelanthropus
Ardipithecus
• Ardipithecus family have 2 species
1. Kadabba- Existed 5.6 million years ago
2. Ramidus- Existed about 4.4 million years ago
• Ardipithecus “ape on ground” was a facultative biped and
stood upright on the ground but could move on all four
limbs in trees.
• Height- 4 feet/120 cm
• Weight- 120 pounds/55kg
Ardipithecus
Australopithecus
• AKA “southern ape” they existed in africa about 5
million to 1 million years ago.
• Brain size- 500 cubic centimeters
• This species was bipedal (able to walk on two
legs)
• Tool users but not tool makers.
• They can not create their own tools.
Australopithecus
Australopithecus
• Australopithecus have 2 major type and under the major type
there are 6 species
1. Gracile Australopithecine- small teeth and jaw
• Australopithecus anamesis
• Australopithecus afarensis
• Australopithecus africanus
Gracile Australopithecine
Australopithecus
2. Australopithecus Robust- larger teeth and jaw and they are
highly muscular
• Australopithecus aethiopicus
• Australopithecus robustus
• Australopithecus boisei
Australopithecus Robust
HOMO
• The homo first lived in
Africa and they were
bipedal.
1. Homo habilis
2. Homo ergaster
3. Homo rudolfensis
4. Homo erectus
5. Homo heidelbergenesis
6. Homo floresiensis
7. Homo sapiens
8. Homo
neanderthalensis
9. Homo sapiens
sapiens
Homo Habilis
• Species with a brain of a Broca’s area which is
associated with speech in modern humans and
was the first to make stone tools.
• Homo habilis The ability to make and use tools is a
unique quality to humans such that the species is
recognized to be the first true human. The species
name means “ Handy Man.” Lived about 2.
• to1.4 million years ago scavenging for food.
Homo Habilis
Homo Ergaster
• Homo ergaster is an extinct species. Lived in
Africa. It existed 1.8 million years ago.
Homo Ergaster
• Species characterized by a longer face, larger
molar andpremolar teeth, and having a larger
braincase compared tohabilis particularly larger
frontal lobes, areas of the brain thatprocesses
information.
• The species lived about 1.9 to 1.8 million years
ago.
Homo Rudolfensis
Homo Rudolfensis
HOMO ERECTUS
• The species name means "Upright Man" with body
proportions similar to that of modern human.Homo
erectus
• Lived 1.89 to 143, 000 years ago; adapted to hot
climates and mostly spread in Africa and Asia.
• They were the first hunters with improvised tools
such as axesand knives, and were the first to
introduce fire..
