Engagement, Metacognition, Purpose, Organization, Working Memory, Extension, and Representation are skills that can be made more explicit when completing tasks by posting them visibly on a wall using pictures and examples. Even young children can learn these "big" skills by associating them with visual aids and simpler explanations, helping focus attention and goals while building active thinking and connecting ideas.

The EMPOWER SKILLS stay the same but you can change how explicitly and emphatically you
name and/or represent them as you do a task.
One of the ways of making the skills more explicit is by posting them on the wall in a highly
visible and attractive way, using pictures if appropriate! Even young child can learn “big” words
like Engagement and Metacognition by pairing them with pictures, examples, or synonyms.
Here’s ONE possibility!
Engagement as focus on a target (topic, task, skill)
Metacognitionas as an active mind….
Purposeas a goal post
Organization…as color coded books.
Working Memory as a shopping cart
Extension as a network of ideas
