De Stijl
- The founding farther of De Stijl was a man named Piet
Mondrian who was born in 1872 and died in 1944. He
studied painting at the Amsterdam academy on and off for a
few years. Moved to Paris and fell in love with the abstract
art style named cubism. He moved back to holland to create
and perfect his own art style named neo-plasticism.

Van Doesburg
As you can see this is a composition of vertical and
horizontal lines which will (in an abstract manner) have to
express the idea of rising upwards, of magnitude. This is
the same idea which used, for example, to be the guiding
principle in the construction of cathedrals. Since only the
manner of expression and not the representation has to
express this general idea, I have not given any title. An
abstract human mind will, of itself, receive the intended
impression. I always confine myself to expressing the
general.

My initial reaction to the art style in
general was that while it was meant to
be different, the bold colours and
jagged lines gave the paintings more
life than standard pieces of art.

Our group idea was to create our own piece of de stijl art inspired by
artists such as Mondrian and Van Doesburg. We used straight lines and the
use of shapes to generate the authentic feel of some of the original art
pieces.
