TASK 1
Idea Generation and Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Use section to track your process of of generating ideas.
List and discuss the styles, techniques and conventions
that you have identified in your research. Explore how
you could approach the project using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
Make sure you assess the viability of ideas as well as the
potential for them creatively.
RESEARCH
My research slide one focused on developing an
understanding of the brain and what makes a person
want to use an app and the type of people who my app
would be targeted at. The main thing I learnt was that
younger people are more likely to use social apps and the
internet as a whole which given I'm developing an app
comes in useful when looking at the target audience via
the brief.
RESEARCH
My second research slide focused on specific apps
including BeReal and Snapchat. I looked into the
userbase and found that the vast majority of users were
people aged 25 and younger which referencing the brief
made my life a lot easier. The UI and design was another
important factor in my research as without design
research I wouldn’t have an idea of what my app would
look like. Specific parts such as minimalistic and easy to
use UI’s were at the forefront so I know I what I have to
aim for.
RESEARCH
My final slide and existing project research consisted on
more of a focus on UI and UX research. Pokemon Go was
one of the main examples and the analysis of its UI was
beneficial to my research as it gave me a grasp of a game
that has a lot of social media aspects to it. As I want to
take my app in a social media route, friends and people
you knows posts are important so I made sure to look
into friends feeds on apps like twitter and Instagram.
POTENTIAL APPROACHES
I want to take my app into a mainstream social media
route with easy access and and easy to use for all ages
despite the target to a younger audience. I’ve also
thought about taking a more interactive game approach
with a Pokemon go like game which lets you walk around
York looking for places and things to do.
POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO
USE
I want a clear house style from the off and my logo
design has established the grey and white colors. The
snapchat approach is something I’m very interested in
from early on with tabs that slide across with minimal
going on other than easy to understand buttons and
widgets.
CONVENTIONS OF YOUR
CHOSEN FORMAT/GENRE
YOU ARE WORKING TO
I’ve found myself working in more print that video, but
app design is very different to what I originally thought I
would do as a video major. The main 3 conventions of a
social media app are simple to use, nice to look at and
available to everyone. I only must focus on the main two
as my app isn’t to be distributed.
SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
- Broadens my skills and ability as Adobe Xd is new to
me
- Good to add to my portfolio
- I understand the software quickly and make a good-
looking app in good time
- It shows I can market a product through social media
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
- Time may limit the outcome of my project
- Adobe Xd might be difficult to use and hard to
understand
- My app won't look very professional as its my first time
using the software
- Exporting may be difficult as I can't publish an app
-
FINAL IDEA – CREATIVE
CONCEPT/RATIONALE
My final idea is to make an app which is a hybrid of a
social media platform and a game. It will have social
pages to see what other people are doing and a game like
feature which allows you to take photos with filters and
whoever takes the best and most original photo that day
wins prises and more to spend in selected shops and
restaurants around the local area. I will use Adobe Xd to
create this app and I'm looking forward to learning the ins
and outs and hopefully coming out of production with a
professional looking app.
I want to take the app in a similar way as BeReal and
Snapchat but combine the styles into one. The simple and
easy to use UI with a smooth and sleek looking colour
pallet consisting of whites and greys makes the app look
modern and minimalistic
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make it.
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are on Teams.
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production:
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome and what will be delivered [duration, format[s], etc]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from a pitch]
JustYork
App and appropriate marketing on social media platforms
The only equipment I’ll need will be a computer to create
my app in Adobe Xd, Photoshop to create and edit banners
and advertisements for my app and a camera/phone to take
photos to include on the advertisements.
LOCATIONS
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
I plan to use the studio facility in college to shoot some
professional looking pictures to include in social media
posts, banners, and advertisements. The risks are
damage to equipment while in the studio which will be
prevented by being careful and putting equipment in
safe places when not in use.
EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
I may look at using a DSLR camera to take my photos in
the studio and I would have to talk to a tutor to try and
book one out for a lesson or two.
FACILITIES
Where will you edit your ‘video’? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
My laptop will be all I need to create my app and edit my
advertisements. The apps I need to do so are included in
my adobe suit subscription so there will be no issues.
PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
The shooting of my photos will be done in college time
and can be done with anyone available at the time (of
which will most likely include me). I want to try and
include Jamie Brown if I do end up having photos of
myself taken as last year, he did a lot of the shooting for
my FMP and his camera skills are better than most other
peoples.
TASK 3.1 Creative or Visual
Planning
PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
MOOD BOARD
MOOD BOARD
DISCUSSION/EXPLANATION
I used a lot of images of social media platforms logos
and an idea of generating an idea of what makes a good
logo. The UI’s show the simplistic approach that I want to
try and follow and use of how the basic color pallets
always lead to the best sleek and minimal designs.
BeReal is an example of this with a mainly black theme
with white text. The text example I put in shows a basic
font which is simple and straight to the point which is
what I'm looking for.
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN/PLANNING
Stage One
- stage one involves app development and research of
techniques to make my app look professional.
Stage Two
- stage two involves the marketing side of my project
which includes taking photos to add onto the to be made
advertisements and social media platforms
Stage Three
- stage three is my contingency time which I like to add
at the end of all my projects to finish off loose ends and
refine my final product.
PRINT/NON-MOVING IMAGE
PLANNING
You should research conventions for your chosen medium
in your earlier work and then approach the project using
some of the methods you’ve discovered.
My research tells me that app makers keep to a near
identical production process regardless the aim of the
app. Competitive research outlined direct competitors to
the app so they can analyse what's good and bad about
the app and design appropriately. Creating mock-ups is
another important part of early production as it allows
you to get a feel of what your making regarding the
overall feel and aesthetic of your app. The trial and error
approach means you can find a result your happiest with.
User feedback is another important part as without users
the developers wouldn’t understand where to improve
and what to keep the same. I plan on following these
steps as if this is what successful professionals do who
create multi-million dollar companies out of these
fundamental steps.
TASK 3.2 Organisational
Planning
ORGANISATIONAL PLANNING
If the visual and creative planning is the WHAT of the
production, organisational planning the WHO, WHAT,
WHERE, WHEN and WHY of the production.
WHO – Me and a small team of “actors” to have their
photo taken
WHAT – App development and advertisement via social
media
WHERE - Production will occur in college and at home
with use of my laptop
WHEN – In the planned production window in the brief.
During college hours and on out of college study days
when necessary.
WHY – To test my ability in app development and throw
PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Jamie Brown – Actor/Camera Operator – 07539 509576
Hannah Stockill – Actor -
Flynn Westwood Bryant – Actor/Camera Operator -
07484 123118
LOCATIONS
College Studio – No permission needed – Camera/Phone
needed
This Location is perfect as the subject is the only thing I
need from the photo. The canvas at the back with the
professional lighting will make the editing easier.
Fallback plan
- College stairs – No permission needed – Camera/Phone
needed
This location is far less ideal as the lighting is nowhere
near as good. It would still be okay but studio quality
lighting is a necessity for the best quality shots.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risks
Broken equipment (personal) – Cameras and phones are
at risk from careless behaviour so they will be places
(when not in use) on tables out of the way from the
shooting zone.
Broken equipment (college) – The risk of breaking things
like lights and the canvas are high if I’m not careful so I
will try to keep wires out of the way and place the
subject far enough away from the canvas where nothing
would get broken.
Failed equipment – In the event my laptop crashes and
nothing saves I’m going to keep a second copy of
everything on my college OneDrive account.
CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
CONTINGENCY PLAN
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel [about 3 potential issues for each]
Technical
- Broken Camera – use phone
- Broken Lights – use phone torch light
- Broken Canvas – use spare provided by college
Location
- Studio unavailable – Use Stairway
Stairway unavailable – Use naturally lighted hallway
Personnel
- Personnel is completely fluid as anybody can fulfil the role of the subject in the photos.
- Camera Operator – I will ask another peer to set up the camera and photograph me
SCHEDULE
Hour 1-4
- I wish to use this time to begin development of my app
and by the end of it have a functioning app that is in a good
enough place to submit.
Hour 4-5
- This time will be used to to get the correct photos and
export them onto my laptop ready for production
Hour 5-8
- This time will be spent on Photoshop and online preparing
my social media platforms and marketing pieces
Hour 9-10
- This time will be used as contingency and to complete
anything I didn’t complete before.

Planning .pptx

  • 2. GUIDANC E This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the relevant elements you should cover for a practical project. It is not exhaustive, but provides some guidance on stages, types of planning and documents you should be assembling. This is not a one size fits all document, you will need to amend, rejig and add/subtract sections depending on what you are making. Add more pages to each section where necessary [you should be doing this!] Add visuals as you see necessary. This document will be added to as you progress through the pre-production phase. Delete this slide when complete
  • 3. TASK 1 Idea Generation and Research
  • 4. RESEARCH & IDEA GENERATION Use section to track your process of of generating ideas. List and discuss the styles, techniques and conventions that you have identified in your research. Explore how you could approach the project using different methods You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps, etc For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us Make sure you assess the viability of ideas as well as the potential for them creatively.
  • 5. RESEARCH My research slide one focused on developing an understanding of the brain and what makes a person want to use an app and the type of people who my app would be targeted at. The main thing I learnt was that younger people are more likely to use social apps and the internet as a whole which given I'm developing an app comes in useful when looking at the target audience via the brief.
  • 6. RESEARCH My second research slide focused on specific apps including BeReal and Snapchat. I looked into the userbase and found that the vast majority of users were people aged 25 and younger which referencing the brief made my life a lot easier. The UI and design was another important factor in my research as without design research I wouldn’t have an idea of what my app would look like. Specific parts such as minimalistic and easy to use UI’s were at the forefront so I know I what I have to aim for.
  • 7. RESEARCH My final slide and existing project research consisted on more of a focus on UI and UX research. Pokemon Go was one of the main examples and the analysis of its UI was beneficial to my research as it gave me a grasp of a game that has a lot of social media aspects to it. As I want to take my app in a social media route, friends and people you knows posts are important so I made sure to look into friends feeds on apps like twitter and Instagram.
  • 8. POTENTIAL APPROACHES I want to take my app into a mainstream social media route with easy access and and easy to use for all ages despite the target to a younger audience. I’ve also thought about taking a more interactive game approach with a Pokemon go like game which lets you walk around York looking for places and things to do.
  • 9. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO USE I want a clear house style from the off and my logo design has established the grey and white colors. The snapchat approach is something I’m very interested in from early on with tabs that slide across with minimal going on other than easy to understand buttons and widgets.
  • 10. CONVENTIONS OF YOUR CHOSEN FORMAT/GENRE YOU ARE WORKING TO I’ve found myself working in more print that video, but app design is very different to what I originally thought I would do as a video major. The main 3 conventions of a social media app are simple to use, nice to look at and available to everyone. I only must focus on the main two as my app isn’t to be distributed.
  • 11. SUMMARY 5 opportunities of your ideas - Broadens my skills and ability as Adobe Xd is new to me - Good to add to my portfolio - I understand the software quickly and make a good- looking app in good time - It shows I can market a product through social media
  • 12. SUMMARY 5 restrictions to your ideas - Time may limit the outcome of my project - Adobe Xd might be difficult to use and hard to understand - My app won't look very professional as its my first time using the software - Exporting may be difficult as I can't publish an app -
  • 13. FINAL IDEA – CREATIVE CONCEPT/RATIONALE My final idea is to make an app which is a hybrid of a social media platform and a game. It will have social pages to see what other people are doing and a game like feature which allows you to take photos with filters and whoever takes the best and most original photo that day wins prises and more to spend in selected shops and restaurants around the local area. I will use Adobe Xd to create this app and I'm looking forward to learning the ins and outs and hopefully coming out of production with a professional looking app. I want to take the app in a similar way as BeReal and Snapchat but combine the styles into one. The simple and easy to use UI with a smooth and sleek looking colour pallet consisting of whites and greys makes the app look modern and minimalistic
  • 15. GUIDANCE: PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT You need to assess the viability of your production and investigate what is required to enable you to make it. Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to investigate standard costings for such a production and apply these to your planned production considering which equipment you would need and resources, etc Resources to support this are on Teams. Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
  • 16. TITLE OF PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION OUTLINE Summary of intended production: Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome and what will be delivered [duration, format[s], etc] Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements Include any details that you think [you could use material from a pitch] JustYork App and appropriate marketing on social media platforms The only equipment I’ll need will be a computer to create my app in Adobe Xd, Photoshop to create and edit banners and advertisements for my app and a camera/phone to take photos to include on the advertisements.
  • 17. LOCATIONS What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this? I plan to use the studio facility in college to shoot some professional looking pictures to include in social media posts, banners, and advertisements. The risks are damage to equipment while in the studio which will be prevented by being careful and putting equipment in safe places when not in use.
  • 18. EQUIPMENT What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When? I may look at using a DSLR camera to take my photos in the studio and I would have to talk to a tutor to try and book one out for a lesson or two.
  • 19. FACILITIES Where will you edit your ‘video’? Do you need any other specialist facilities…? My laptop will be all I need to create my app and edit my advertisements. The apps I need to do so are included in my adobe suit subscription so there will be no issues.
  • 20. PERSONNEL CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they available? The shooting of my photos will be done in college time and can be done with anyone available at the time (of which will most likely include me). I want to try and include Jamie Brown if I do end up having photos of myself taken as last year, he did a lot of the shooting for my FMP and his camera skills are better than most other peoples.
  • 21. TASK 3.1 Creative or Visual Planning
  • 22. PRE- VISUALISATION/CONCEPT BOARDS Tool for exploring the direction and visuals Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel” Presents key moments in your video A means to sketch/plan ideas Information on colour/lighting Defining the “mise-en-scene” Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production, the following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own way, add more as you need to Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this: http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for- hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
  • 24. MOOD BOARD DISCUSSION/EXPLANATION I used a lot of images of social media platforms logos and an idea of generating an idea of what makes a good logo. The UI’s show the simplistic approach that I want to try and follow and use of how the basic color pallets always lead to the best sleek and minimal designs. BeReal is an example of this with a mainly black theme with white text. The text example I put in shows a basic font which is simple and straight to the point which is what I'm looking for.
  • 25. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN/PLANNING Stage One - stage one involves app development and research of techniques to make my app look professional. Stage Two - stage two involves the marketing side of my project which includes taking photos to add onto the to be made advertisements and social media platforms Stage Three - stage three is my contingency time which I like to add at the end of all my projects to finish off loose ends and refine my final product.
  • 26. PRINT/NON-MOVING IMAGE PLANNING You should research conventions for your chosen medium in your earlier work and then approach the project using some of the methods you’ve discovered. My research tells me that app makers keep to a near identical production process regardless the aim of the app. Competitive research outlined direct competitors to the app so they can analyse what's good and bad about the app and design appropriately. Creating mock-ups is another important part of early production as it allows you to get a feel of what your making regarding the overall feel and aesthetic of your app. The trial and error approach means you can find a result your happiest with. User feedback is another important part as without users the developers wouldn’t understand where to improve and what to keep the same. I plan on following these steps as if this is what successful professionals do who create multi-million dollar companies out of these fundamental steps.
  • 28. ORGANISATIONAL PLANNING If the visual and creative planning is the WHAT of the production, organisational planning the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY of the production. WHO – Me and a small team of “actors” to have their photo taken WHAT – App development and advertisement via social media WHERE - Production will occur in college and at home with use of my laptop WHEN – In the planned production window in the brief. During college hours and on out of college study days when necessary. WHY – To test my ability in app development and throw
  • 29. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of production, using a table is suggested Jamie Brown – Actor/Camera Operator – 07539 509576 Hannah Stockill – Actor - Flynn Westwood Bryant – Actor/Camera Operator - 07484 123118
  • 30. LOCATIONS College Studio – No permission needed – Camera/Phone needed This Location is perfect as the subject is the only thing I need from the photo. The canvas at the back with the professional lighting will make the editing easier. Fallback plan - College stairs – No permission needed – Camera/Phone needed This location is far less ideal as the lighting is nowhere near as good. It would still be okay but studio quality lighting is a necessity for the best quality shots.
  • 31. RISK ASSESSMENT Risks Broken equipment (personal) – Cameras and phones are at risk from careless behaviour so they will be places (when not in use) on tables out of the way from the shooting zone. Broken equipment (college) – The risk of breaking things like lights and the canvas are high if I’m not careful so I will try to keep wires out of the way and place the subject far enough away from the canvas where nothing would get broken. Failed equipment – In the event my laptop crashes and nothing saves I’m going to keep a second copy of everything on my college OneDrive account.
  • 32. CONTINGENCY PLANNING Things go wrong Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to minimise the effect on production You should consider the following areas: Technical, Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues for each] Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
  • 33. CONTINGENCY PLAN You should consider the following areas: Technical, Location, Personnel [about 3 potential issues for each] Technical - Broken Camera – use phone - Broken Lights – use phone torch light - Broken Canvas – use spare provided by college Location - Studio unavailable – Use Stairway Stairway unavailable – Use naturally lighted hallway Personnel - Personnel is completely fluid as anybody can fulfil the role of the subject in the photos. - Camera Operator – I will ask another peer to set up the camera and photograph me
  • 34. SCHEDULE Hour 1-4 - I wish to use this time to begin development of my app and by the end of it have a functioning app that is in a good enough place to submit. Hour 4-5 - This time will be used to to get the correct photos and export them onto my laptop ready for production Hour 5-8 - This time will be spent on Photoshop and online preparing my social media platforms and marketing pieces Hour 9-10 - This time will be used as contingency and to complete anything I didn’t complete before.
