FACTUAL PRODUCTION
Unit 9: Characteristics and contexts in media and communication
To make something interesting
You have to be interested
• It is recommended that you select a subject that
you are already interested in.
• There must be a specific point to the piece, but this
could be quite broad, but you need to have a focus.
• We’re not interested in ‘content’ or a vlog about
yourself which is vague and directionless.
• The style and content are up to you, but quality
and purpose are key

Learning outcomes
1. Understand the characteristics and context for a chosen
media and communication activity
1.1 Analyse the characteristics and context for a chosen
media and communication activity
1.2 Interpret research activity to develop ideas for
creative production.
2. Be able to use knowledge of the characteristics and
context of a media communication activity.
2.1 Use knowledge of characteristics and context to
plan and develop creative solutions for a chosen media
and communication activity.
2.2 Apply practical skills, knowledge and understanding
of characteristics and contexts to production creative
solutions for a chosen media and communication
activity.
3. Be able to use evaluation in support of creative media
production.
3.1 Critically evaluation creative solutions against
identified characteristics and context for a chosen
media and communication activity.
3.2 Critically reflect on learning to inform personal
development.
Submission list:
Task 1 – Research in to existing products
Understanding existing products and generating initial ideas based on this research.
Task 2 – Idea Development and planning
Developing visual style, devising the structure and plan for your piece and production
schedule.
Task 3 – Production – Filming/material collection
Filming, audio recording, source material collection.
Task 4 – Production – Editing/post-production
Assembly, edit and post-production.
Task 5 – Evaluation
Critical evaluation of your project.
Induction task
• Your options are broadly;
• video [dur 2-3 mins],
• print [fanzine]
• audio [podcast dur. 2-3 mins]
• Mind map potential ideas for your Factual Project
considering the following:
• Format [video, print, audio]
• Topic [what is the factual production about]
• Styles and techniques you will employ [think about
similar products as reference points initially]

Task 2 – Idea Development and planning Developing visual style, devising the structure and plan for your piece and production schedule. Task 3 – Production – Filming/material collection Filming, audio recording, source material collection. Task 4 – Production – Editing/post-production Assembly, edit and post-production. Task 5 – Evaluation Critical evaluation of your project.
