2. Define & Explain Mentorship
Mentor: someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced
and often younger person
A person may have many mentors over the course of their life
A person may, and often should, have several mentors at one time
I have specific mentors for specific disciplines and various mentors for various stages of my life
Amy Smith (2015) agrees; she says, “I've found that having several mentors is needed to
address the twists, turns, breadth, and depth that careers take over time” (para. 5).
A mentoring relationship is one of trust, confidence, and intimacy
The mentor relationship can be more intimate than the workplace relationship can
accommodate or afford
3. How to Find Mentors
Figure out why you need a mentor
Identify potential places to meet a mentor
Ask them out for coffee
Look your best and be prepared
Say, “Thank You”
Set up another meeting (optional)
(Jessica Friedman, 2012, p. 14-15)
4. How to Maintain the Relationship
We are all aware that people come and go from our lives, this is natural
If we finish construction, and the lift is still inside … We have a problem!
Show honor to the person and the relationship
If you are meeting, BE ON TIME!!!
Show an attitude of gratitude
Be as open and honest as you can
Tell them of the impact that they are having
Let them see the areas that adjustments are being made
5. My Mentors
I have been fortunate to have a number of great mentors
I had a mentor in my previous career
I have a financial mentor
I have an educational mentor
I am certain that I will have a mentor in my next career
Non-Traditional Mentors
Mentor: someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced person
I believe that you can be “distance mentored” through books, blogs, podcasts, etc
