2. Kitchen – is one of the areas inside the house
where a great deal o food preparation and cooking
is being done.
3. The Kitchen is composed of 3 major parts:
1. Working area – food
preparation and actual
cooking happens. This is
where the stove, oven, and
center island counter top
are placed.
2. Storage section - includes
dry and wet storage cabinet for
food. This also contains storage
cabinets for cooking and eating
utensils to ensure a well
organized kitchen.
3. Cleanup zone – consist
sink, area for trash bins, and
storage for cleaning supplies. A
separate storage cabinet for
cleaning materials should be
provided to prevent
contamination and poisoning
that may be caused by chemicals
from detergents and other

concept – refers to the proper
positioning of the refrigerator,
stove, sink. The primary goal of
this concept is to minimize the
flow of traffic within the work
zone by placing the refrigerator,
stove, and sink in the most
effective distances possible of
ensure an excellent work output.
6. 1.L – shaped kitchen
- Consists of work space
on two adjacent walls
perpendicular to each
other, which can be
divided into multiple
worksites.
7. 2. U – shaped kitchen
- The most basic, useful, and versatile
layouts that is appropriate for small,
medium, and large kitchens. It is
characterized as having two parallel
walls that are perpendicular to the
third. It is advantageous in terms of (a)
space in dividing the kitchen into
multiple worksites, (b) free traffic flow
in work zones, (c) wider counter space,
and (d) provision of a center island for
wide U-kitchens.
8. 3. G-shaped kitchen
- is modified version of the U-
shaped lay-out where a fourth leg
which also known as the
peninsula, is attached. Through
this peninsula, more space for
counter and storage cabinets are
created, and at the same time, a
few seats fro guest are provided.
9. 4. Galley or Corridor kitchen – a
small spaced kitchen with more length
than width. It consists of working
space on two opposing walls that
leads to a single traffic lane between
them. It is also open on both ends that
creates a feeling of connection to the
other rooms of the house. Though it
can be efficient especially for
rectangular shaped house space, it
may also cause congestion while
cooking.
10. 5. One-wall kitchen or Straight
kitchen – is the smallest among all
kitchen lay-outs. It is also known as
straight kitchen since it only has a
single bank of cabinets along one
wall of a space with the refrigerator,
sink and stove integrated into it.
The traffic flow in the work zone is
illuminated but the work triangle is
definitely not observed and the
storage are is limited.
