CM WARNS AGAINST
REINSTALLING
LOUDSPEAKERS
Lucknow: Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath said on
Wednesday that it should
be ensured that loud-
speakers removed from
religious sites shouldn’t
be re-installed. The
sound of loudspeakers
shouldn’t come out of the
religious premises, failing
which, concerned area
PS in charge and other
officials will be answer-
able. The CM further
said, “It would be good if
we can issue an appeal to
use these loudspeakers
(that have been removed
from religious sites) in
schools. This time no
‘Alvida Namaz’ happened
on roads. We’ll ensure
that roads are opened for
public movement.

purpose of the batteries.

Yogi's homework makes his
ministers 'uncomfortable'
First India Bureau
Lucknow: For Uttar
Pradesh Ministers,
used to luxurious and
lavish lifestyles, the
‘homework’ given by
Chief Minister Yogi Ad-
ityanath is proving to
be “uncomfortable and
unreasonable”.
There are growing
whispers in the corri-
dors of power about the
discomfort being expe-
rienced by the Minis-
ters in their new sched-
ule which makes it
mandatory for them to
visit districts and spend
at least 24 hours in one
of them every week.
To make matters
worse, Yogi has direct-
ed that the Ministers
can only stay in gov-
ernment guest houses
or circuit houses, not
hotels.
“The condition of
most government guest
houses and circuit
houses is so deplorable
that they are unfit for
stay. Plaster is peeling,
washrooms are stink-
ing, and pests and liz-
ards all over. The guest
houses need to be com-
pletely renovated be-
fore one can stay there.
I have been spending
sleepless nights during
my district tours and
this is taking a toll on
my health,” one such
Minister said on the
condition of anonymity
.
Recently, Uttar
Pradesh Minister Nand
Gopal Nandi hit the
headlines when he
chose to stay at the
home of a party worker
and released his photo-
graph in which he is
seen taking a bath in
the courtyard.

No grant to new madrassas: UP govt
First India Bureau
Lucknow: Yogi Aditya-
nath government has
decided to stop grants
for new madrassas in
the state. The State cab-
inet has given nod to the
proposal to exclude new
madrassas from the
grants list.
The practice of finan-
cial aid to madrasas
was started by Akhilesh
Yadav government but
with reversal of policy,
new madrassas won’t
get any monetary or lo-
gistical support from
the government.
Uttar Pradesh has a
total of 16,000 regis-
tered madrassas out of
which more than 500
are government aided.
In last Budget, the
state govt allocated Rs
479 crore under the ma-
drassa modernisation
scheme.
About 20 lakh stu-
dents are registered in
these madrassas.
The policy of govt grant
to madrasas was made
during Akhilesh re-
gime, however, it came
under review during 1st
tenure of Yogi govern-
ment. And, yesterday,
the government accept-
ed proposal to stop
grants to new madras-
sas in Uttar Pradesh.
The decision to stop
grants to new madras-
sas comes, just a week
after National An-
them was mandatory
in Muslim institu-
tions. The new circu-
lar issued by UP Ma-
drassa Education
Board mandates that
students as well as
teachers in madrassas
sing national anthem

REGIONAL
PARTIES ARE
DOING BETTER
THAN CONGRESS
AGAINST THE BJP
he Congress is offi-
cially headed by So-
nia Gandhi and not
her son Rahul, but it
is the latter who calls
the shots in the party
, and creates
problems. Hardik Patel leaving
the Congress to possibly join the
Bharatiya Janata Party will
prove costly for the party in
termsof PatidarvotesinGujarat
but Rahul is taking it too lightly
.
Or so it seems. Patel is not the
only one. Before him it was He-
manta Biswa Sarma whose part-
ing proved to be an irreparable
loss for the Congress in the
north-east. Humiliation, which
forced Captain Amarinder Singh
to quit, was another example of
Rahul’s ineptitude.
Rahul’s recent statement on
regional parties has also drawn
flak. The Congress has a strong
presence only in Rajasthan and
Chhattisgarh, while regional
parties have done better than
the grand old party against the
BJP. West Bengal, Telangana
and Tamil Nadu are proof that
Rahul should not undervalue
regional parties which have
done better than the Congress.
T
he Supreme Court
order releasing
AG Perarivalan, a
convict in former
Prime Minister
Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination
has fuelled a two-faceted row.
One, the Congress has taken
umbrage to the convict’s re-
lease and asked if the re-
maining six will be freed too.
Two, the verdict has given
the Tamil Nadu government
a handle to criticise the state
Governor who sat over the
state Cabinet’s recommenda-
tion to remit Perarivalan’s
sentence. There are other is-
sues over which the Gover-
nor has dragged his feet an-
gering the MK Stalin govern-
ment.
The TN Governor set a re-
cord of sorts in his stalling
Perarivalan’s remission. The
Supreme Court commuted
Perarivalan’s death sentence
to life imprisonment in 2014
because decision on his mer-
cy petition was being inordi-
nately delayed. In 2015 he ap-
plied to the Governor for
pardon and sought remission
of his sentence. In 2018 the
top court asked the Governor
to decide on his pardon plea.
But the Governor did not give
it a thought. Soon after, the
State Cabinet recommended
that Perarivalan be released
forthwith. Again in 2020, the
apex court said that the Gov-
ernor was competent to grant
remission even if investiga-
tion against Perarivalan was
on. The CBI too left it to the
Raj Bhawan’s discretion.
The Governor still did not
act and the convict continued
to languish in jail stating that
the power of remission vest-
ed in the President. Welcom-
ing the order as victory for
“state autonomy”, Stalin
said, Governors have no pow-
ers to interfere in the govern-
ment’s decisions. Stalin must
remember that one swallow
doesn’t make a summer. The
present verdict won’t change
the Governor’s ways.

T
ARMY SECULARISM
A POSSIBLE ROLE MODEL
FOR INDIAN SOCIETY TODAY
n the last two months the
state of Rajasthan has wit-
nessed communal riots over
issues involving religious
faiths of two communities. A
review of the recent commu-
nal violence has shown that
although secularism and reli-
gious freedom have been re-
stored in the constitution but
the realities on ground have
been different. Unfortunately
,
in India secularism is more
of a subject of politics than
of metaphysics or even val-
ues. This is one of the major
reasons of eruptions of such
rioting endangering commu-
nal harmony. While we can
keep debating and blaming
on factors like appeasement
of minority by some or re-
duced tolerance of majority
by others, failure of law en-
forcing agencies and so many
others but in reality it’s a fail-
ure of unique Indian society
which derives its strength
from ‘Unity in Diversity’ and
‘Peaceful Co-Existence’
which has been prevailing in
our country for ages. The con-
stitution of India aims gov-
ernance that allows people of
all religions to live in peace
and harmony. The govern-
ance and politics must deal
with administrative fairness
and economic development
of its citizens and keep per-
sonal beliefs like religion and
social customs out of its do-
main unless they contravene
the established rule of law.
The Indian Army is a secu-
lar organisation and all offic-
ers and soldiers serve the Na-
tionwithprideirrespectiveof
their religion, caste, creed or
gender. It’s been a decade and
a half since I hung my uni-
form and as a retired Army
Officer, I have been a witness
to the fact that our people are
easily tricked and provoked
falling prey to the hate mon-
gers on name of caste, creed,
religion and regionalism. In
the army, each officer identi-
fies with the religion of his
troops. In regiments where
the soldiers are from more
than one religion, the officers
and all jawans attend the
weekly religious prayers
mainly referred as ‘Mandir
Parade’ for all the faiths.
Indian army genuinely be-
lieves in two eternal truths -
the oneness of God and vic-
tory in operations. Both are
so inter related and have been
deeply rooted in Olive Green
hearts that we fail to see any-
thing beyond this eternal
truth. On one occasion in 1992
in my mixed Arty Regiment
where we traditionally had a
Mandir and an ad hoc Gurud-
wara, the CO proposed estab-
lishing a ‘Sarv Dharama
Sthal’ to enable co locating
sacred symbols and books of
all religions. Later on a Regi-
mental celebration day
, I was
thrilled to see our Pandit Ji
with a Granthi, a Maulvi, a
Pastor all under one roof in
theunit‘SarvDharamaSthal’
offering prayers and partici-
pating in the function. In my
opinion, there can never be a
better portrait of national in-
tegration or secularism.
Amongst many other ac-
tivities in Army, one of the
most popular one is Sports
and this binds the whole unit
as one inseparable team. The
team is represented by just
single name of Paltan and
the selection criteria is mer-
it as there are no distinctions
on caste, creed, regions or
religions. Rather as a team
captain of a Division Hand-
ball team I never knew who
belonged to which religion or
region. We all prayed togeth-
er and played together with
perfect harmony
.
Lastly
, it’s the operations
that truly reflect the camara-
derieandspiritdecorpsinthe
well knit bonded organisation
like Indian Army
. There are
floods of examples of display
of oneness by the soldiers to
defend their honour and safe-
tyof thecountry-areligionin
most true sense for any Fouji.
I can recall an Operations
roomof aDivisiondeployedin
active operations. The staff
and the troops who were exe-
cuting the operational task on
ground had faith in different
religion. The operations were
completed in 96 hours giving
no breaks or rest to any of the
team members. Everyone was
contributing more than hun-
dred percent and the morale
and performance of troops on
ground as amazing. It was in-
deed an Army Unit with Mus-
lim troops who caused maxi-
mum damage to Pakistan
posts.Attheendof operations
when the celebrations were
on, I asked myself did anyone
even know or talk about caste,
creed, religion or region of
others - no not even once. So
whyarewesomuchintocaste,
creed, religion or regionalism
in normal daily life.
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY
THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL
I
For an Indian soldier, his
religion is the Indian Army
or the nation and the faith he
belongs to doesn’t really
matter as much while he is
serving people of the nation.
This is the single most reason
why Indian Army still
remains the most trusted
institution of the country in
the eyes of common man. I
wish our entire country
follows in the footsteps of our
Army which is epitome of
Secularism, National
Harmony and Unity

Chandigarh (Agen-

who were sitting on a
dharna at the Mohali-
Chandigarh border to
pressfortheirdemands,
Wednesday ended their
stir after the Punjab
government accepted 12
of the 13 demands.
While a formal an-
nouncement of the ac-
ceptance of the de-
mands was made by
Punjab rural develop-
ment and panchayats
minister Kuldeep Singh
Dhaliwal, the precursor
to it was a meeting be-
tween leaders of pro-
testing farmers’ organi-
sations and Punjab
Chief Minister Bhag-
want Mann. Among the
13 demands, the two
sides could not reach a
consensus on the de-
mand for a bonus of Rs
500 on every quintal of
wheat on account of a
drop in the yield due to
shrivelling of grains.
After the meeting,
Dhaliwal reached the
protest site to make a
formal announcement
of the acceptance of the
demands. Earlier, farm-
er leader Jagjit Singh
Dallewal had said that
after meeting Mann,
they held a meeting
among themselves and
confirmed that Dhali-
wal would reach the
spot and make the an-
nouncement.
During the meeting,
the Chief Minister di-
vided the state into two
zones for sowing of
paddy instead of four.

INDIA PLANS TO DEPLOY S-400
MISSILES BY JUNE: PENTAGON
Washington (Agen-

deploy the Russian-
made S-400 missile de-
fence system by next
month to defend itself
from Pakistani and Chi-
nese threats as it is pur-
suing an extensive mili-
tary modernisation ef-
fort encompassing air,
ground, naval and stra-
tegic nuclear forces,
Pentagon’s top intelli-
gence official has said
during a Congressional
hearing.
India started receiv-
ing the delivery of the
S-400 missile defence
system from Russia in
December last year,
Lieutenant General
Scott Berrier, Director
of Defence Intelligence
Agency, told members
of the Senate Armed
Services Committee
during a recent Con-
gressional hearing.
As of October 2021,
India’s military was
seeking to procure ad-
vanced surveillance
systems to strengthen
its land and sea borders
and boost its offensive
and defensive cyber
capabilities.“In Decem-
ber, India received its
initial delivery of the
Russian S-400 air de-
fence system, and it in-
tends to operate the sys-
tem to defend against
Pakistani and Chinese
threats by June 2022,”
Lt Gen Berrier said.
“India continued to
develop its own hyper-
sonic, ballistic, cruise
and air defence missile
capabilities, conduct-
ing multiple tests in
2021. India has a grow-
ing number of satellites
in orbit, and is expand-
ing its use of space as-
sets, likely pursuing of-
fensive space capabili-
ties,” he said.
Lt Gen Berrier told
the lawmakers that New
Delhi is pursuing an ex-
tensive military mod-
ernisation effort encom-
passing air, ground, na-
val and strategic nucle-
ar forces with an em-
phasis on domestic de-
fence production.

US TO OFFER INDIA $500 MN IN MILITARY AID
The US is preparing a military aid
package for India to deepen se-
curity ties and reduce the country’s de-
pendence on Russian weapons, people
familiar with the matter said. The pack-
age under consideration would include
foreign military financing of as much
as $500 million, according to one
person, which would make India one
of the largest recipients of such aid
behind Israel and Egypt. It’s unclear
when the deal would be announced, or
what weapons would be included. The
effort is part of a much larger initia-
tive by Biden’s administration to court
India as a long-term security partner.
K’taka BJP postpones
Cabinet expansion
Bengaluru (Agen-
cies): The BJP has
postponed the much
awaited cabinet ex-
pansion in Karnata-
ka. Sources in the
party have said that
the decision has been
taken in view of elec-
tions to the Legisla-
tive Council and the
Rajya Sabha.
The party leaders,
fearing cross voting
by the disgruntled
members, have decid-
ed not to give any
room for it at all.
Besides, Chief Min-
ister Basavaraj Bom-
mai is taking up the
tour of Europe to at-
tend the World Eco-

from May 22 to 26.
The government
will have to take a call
on local body elec-
tions for Taluk and
Zilla Panchayats
across the state as
well as BBMP elec-
tions in Bengaluru.
The elections to 9
seats of Council and 4
Rajya Sabha seats
have already been de-
clared. The top brass
does not want to take
any chances and is
not in favour of open-
ing Pandora’s Box by
cabinet expansion.
CM Bommai recent-
ly maintained that the
party high command
will take a final call on
cabinet expansion. He
also said that the deci-
sion to allot ticket to
BY Vijayendra, son of
former CM BS Yedi-
yurappa whether to
contest MLC polls in
the state, lies with the
top leadership.
The core committee
had recommended Vi-
jayendra’s name for
the MLC. Sources in
the party say that the
stage is all set for min-
isterial berth for Vi-
jayendra.
However, the top
leaders are yet to take
a final call on the is-
sue as some party
leaders are apprehen-
sive about Vijayendra
becoming a power
centre in the govern-
ment as Yediyurappa
is going to throw his
weight behind his son.
Meanwhile, as the
cabinet expansion is
being delayed, the op-
position Congress
has issued statements
that many BJP top
leaders have ap-
proached them.
Fearing cross voting, State BJP halts Cabinet expansion.

New Delhi (PTI): The
Supreme Court on
Wednesday gave the
go-ahead for local
body polls in Madhya
Pradesh with OBC res-
ervation, allowing the
state government to
notify the reservation
pattern on the basis of
the recommendations
in a second report of a
state backward class-
es commission.
A bench presided by
Justice A M Khan-
wilkar took into ac-
count the state’s sub-
mission that an earlier
report which the court
had objected to had
been revised and that
the delimitation exer-
cise had already been
completed and notified.
“For the time being,
we permit the Madhya
Pradesh state election
commission to notify
the programme for the
respective local bodies
keeping in mind the
delimitation notifica-
tion already issued as
on date .i.e. till today
and the report submit-
ted by the dedicated
commission…,” the
Supreme Court or-
dered. “We permit the
state of Madhya
Pradesh to notify the
reservation pattern lo-
cal body wise to be ad-
hered to by the state
election commission
within one week.
The state election
commission shall no-
tify the election pro-
gramme in respect of
the concerned local
bodies thereafter with-
in one week.”
On May 10, the court
had directed that the
elections to the local
bodies be notified
within two weeks with-
out providing for OBC
reservation as the
state was yet to com-
plete the triple test laid
down by the SC before
providing for such res-
ervation.

World Meteorological Organization says extreme weather wreaked heavy toll on human lives
FOUR CRITICAL CLIMATE INDICATORS
BROKE RECORDS IN 2021: UN REPORT
Geneva (Agencies):
Four critical global in-
dicators of the climate
crisis broke records in
2021, according to a UN
report, from rising
oceans to the levels of
heat-trapping emis-
sions in the atmos-
phere.
Greenhouse gas con-
centrations, sea-level
rise, ocean heat, and
ocean acidification, set
four new climate
change records in 2021,
the World Meteorologi-
cal Organization
(WMO) said Wednes-
day
.
The UN World Mete-
orological Organiza-
tion (WMO) said these
were clear signs of hu-
manity’s impact on the
planet, which was
bringing long-lasting
effects. Extreme
weather, which the
WMO called the day-to-
day face of the climate
emergency, wreaked a
heavy toll on human
lives and led to hun-
dreds of billions of
dollars in damages, the
agency said.
Droughts and floods
triggered food price
rises that have been ex-
acerbated in 2022. The
WMO’s State of the
Global Climate in 2021
report also found the
past seven years have
been the hottest record-
ed. “Today’s State of
the Climate report is a
dismal litany of hu-
manity’s failure to tack-
le climate disruption.
Fossil fuels are a dead
end – environmentally
and economically,” said
António Guterres, the
secretary general of
the UN. “The only sus-
tainable future is a re-
newable one. The good
news is that the lifeline
is right in front of us.
Wind and solar are
readily available and,
in most cases, cheaper
than coal and other fos-
sil fuels. If we act to-
gether, the renewable
energy transformation
can be the peace project
of the 21st century
.”
Prof Petteri Taalas,
the WMO secretary gen-
eral, said: “Our climate
is changing before our
eyes. Human-induced
greenhouse gases will
warm the planet for
many generations to
come. Some glaciers
have reached the point
of no return and this
will have long-term re-
percussions in a world
in which more than 2
billion people already
experiencewaterstress.
“Extreme weather
has the most immedi-
ate impact on our daily
lives,” he said. “We are
seeing a drought emer-
gency unfolding in the
Horn of Africa, recent
deadly flooding in
South Africa and the
extreme heat in India
and Pakistan. Early
warning systems are
critically required [to
save lives] yet these are
only available in less
than half of WMO’s
187 member nations.”
The world’s oceans
absorb more than 90%
of the heat trapped by
greenhouse gases and
2021 set a record. The
increasing warmth in
the ocean, which is ir-
reversible over time-
scales of centuries to
millennia, has been es-
pecially strong in the
last 20 years. Much of
the ocean experienced
at least one strong ma-
rine heatwave in 2021,
the WMO said.
The global sea level
also reached a new re-
cord high in 2021. It has
increased by 10cm since
1993 and the rise is ac-
celerating, driven by the
melting of ice sheets
and glaciers and the
thermal expansion of
the ocean. The rise im-
perils hundreds of mil-
lions of coastal dwell-
ers, the WMO said, and
increases the damage
caused by hurricanes
and cyclones.

terms of the arithmetic
of the number of mem-

amazing.
I had always ad-
mired Sridevi but she
held me spellbound by
the sheer expanse of
the emotions which
cross her beautiful
wide eyes and expres-

think that the act is

The scenes between

are cute and innocent
but there is a bitter-
sweet feeling to the
entire affair as it is
quite clear that even
if Sridevi does, as
such reciprocate his
feelings she is not in
her right mind and it
is wrong ethically.
However in the cli-
max such as the pow-
er of the sheer des-
peration and helpless-
ness which Kamal
Hassan portrays That
one cannot help but
weep with him. I re-
ally do think that it is
the last scene as
Sridevi recovered
from her amnesia and
is now a beautiful
young woman both
mentally and physi-
cally and has no mem-
ory of this young
teacher who devoted
so much time to her
care, safety and well-

jects him as not just a
man but as a person
and that breaks him.

heworldof medicine
has grown by leaps
and bounds, and
what better than the
current pandemic to
understand the
growth of science,
especially in the field of med-
icine and health? However,
there remain diseases and
disordersthathavelittle or no
cure. Aplastic anemia is one
such condition that has an
impact on all types of blood
cells and can also turn out to
be fatal. It leads to failure of
bone marrow in the body
which further results in no
formation of any types of
blood cells. While many may
not have heard about aplastic
anemia, there are several
cases of it. Since aplastic ane-
mia causes no formation of
blood cells in the body, a per-
son suffering from it needs to
undergo a blood transfusion.
However, even that may not
help the patient.
But a homoeopathic doc-
tor in Indore, Madhya
Pradesh,in conversation
with First India has claimed
that aplastic anemia can be
treated with better results.
Dr AK Dwivedi, a renowned
homoeopathic doctor, said,
“Anemia, as we all know, is a
lack of blood in one’s body.
However, aplastic anemia is
a complete loss of blood or
no formation of blood in the
body
. In this, there will be no
blood formation in the body
of a person detected with it.
This requires the patient to
undergo a blood transfusion
for and bone marrow trans-
plant. But even that may not
guarantee complete treat-
ment, as aplastic anemia is
considered fatal.”
“Homeopathic medicines
have been proved to be effec-
tive for treating aplastic ane-
mia. The medicines help in
stopping the failure of bone
marrow development. Mean-
ing, if the bone marrow con-
tinues to develop in the body,
so would all types of blood
cells, and the body would be
able to keep producing blood
on its own,” claimed Dr
Dwivedi. Aplastic Anemia is
a rare and serious condition.
There are several symptoms
to it, the initial ones being
high fever, fatigue, and head-
ache. However, the serious
symptoms include uncon-
trolled bleeding from the
nose, stool, etc.
As per Dr Dwivedi, aplas-
tic anemia often goes unde-
tected in the early stages.
And by the time it is detect-
ed, the person’s condition
starts to get worse. He fur-
ther said that there are no set
age criteria for patients. It
can happen from a 15-year-
old child to a senior citizen
of 85 years of age. “It can
happen in any age group. Re-
cently, I treated a two-year-
old child from Bihar. But,
aplastic anemia is mostly
found in people in the middle
age group,” added Dr Dwive-
di. He also said that aplastic
anemia can also be found in
patients with any type of
cancer. “After undergoing
chemotherapy, if a person’s
bone marrow has had an im-
pact, he or she can be prone
to aplastic anemia,” he said.
But how does one get it
checked in the early stage?
To this, Dr Dwivedi said,
“Once must go through basic
blood tests every few months.
It is a very healthy habit. Not
just aplastic anemia, but a
check on your blood cells
can help you detect any dis-
ease at an early stage. One
must also not avoid symp-
toms such as fatigue.” While
concluding, Dr Dwivedi said
that aplastic anemia often
goes undetected unless the
serious symptoms start
showing up, which is why he
says that it is important to
undergo regular health
check-ups.

TOP TWEETS REGIONAL PARTIES ARE DOING BETTER THAN CONGRESS AGAINST THE BJP he Congress is offi- cially headed by So- nia Gandhi and not her son Rahul, but it is the latter who calls the shots in the party , and creates problems. Hardik Patel leaving the Congress to possibly join the Bharatiya Janata Party will prove costly for the party in termsof PatidarvotesinGujarat but Rahul is taking it too lightly . Or so it seems. Patel is not the only one. Before him it was He- manta Biswa Sarma whose part- ing proved to be an irreparable loss for the Congress in the north-east. Humiliation, which forced Captain Amarinder Singh to quit, was another example of Rahul’s ineptitude. Rahul’s recent statement on regional parties has also drawn flak. The Congress has a strong presence only in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while regional parties have done better than the grand old party against the BJP. West Bengal, Telangana and Tamil Nadu are proof that Rahul should not undervalue regional parties which have done better than the Congress. T he Supreme Court order releasing AG Perarivalan, a convict in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination has fuelled a two-faceted row. One, the Congress has taken umbrage to the convict’s re- lease and asked if the re- maining six will be freed too. Two, the verdict has given the Tamil Nadu government a handle to criticise the state Governor who sat over the state Cabinet’s recommenda- tion to remit Perarivalan’s sentence. There are other is- sues over which the Gover- nor has dragged his feet an- gering the MK Stalin govern- ment. The TN Governor set a re- cord of sorts in his stalling Perarivalan’s remission. The Supreme Court commuted Perarivalan’s death sentence to life imprisonment in 2014 because decision on his mer- cy petition was being inordi- nately delayed. In 2015 he ap- plied to the Governor for pardon and sought remission of his sentence. In 2018 the top court asked the Governor to decide on his pardon plea. But the Governor did not give it a thought. Soon after, the State Cabinet recommended that Perarivalan be released forthwith. Again in 2020, the apex court said that the Gov- ernor was competent to grant remission even if investiga- tion against Perarivalan was on. The CBI too left it to the Raj Bhawan’s discretion. The Governor still did not act and the convict continued to languish in jail stating that the power of remission vest- ed in the President. Welcom- ing the order as victory for “state autonomy”, Stalin said, Governors have no pow- ers to interfere in the govern- ment’s decisions. Stalin must remember that one swallow doesn’t make a summer. The present verdict won’t change the Governor’s ways. SC ENDS A GUV’S INDECISION Welcoming the order as victory for “state autonomy”, Stalin said, Governors have no powers to interfere in the government’s decisions. Stalin must remember that one swallow doesn’t make a summer. The present verdict won’t change the Governor’s ways T ARMY SECULARISM A POSSIBLE ROLE MODEL FOR INDIAN SOCIETY TODAY n the last two months the state of Rajasthan has wit- nessed communal riots over issues involving religious faiths of two communities. A review of the recent commu- nal violence has shown that although secularism and reli- gious freedom have been re- stored in the constitution but the realities on ground have been different. Unfortunately , in India secularism is more of a subject of politics than of metaphysics or even val- ues. This is one of the major reasons of eruptions of such rioting endangering commu- nal harmony. While we can keep debating and blaming on factors like appeasement of minority by some or re- duced tolerance of majority by others, failure of law en- forcing agencies and so many others but in reality it’s a fail- ure of unique Indian society which derives its strength from ‘Unity in Diversity’ and ‘Peaceful Co-Existence’ which has been prevailing in our country for ages. The con- stitution of India aims gov- ernance that allows people of all religions to live in peace and harmony. The govern- ance and politics must deal with administrative fairness and economic development of its citizens and keep per- sonal beliefs like religion and social customs out of its do- main unless they contravene the established rule of law. The Indian Army is a secu- lar organisation and all offic- ers and soldiers serve the Na- tionwithprideirrespectiveof their religion, caste, creed or gender. It’s been a decade and a half since I hung my uni- form and as a retired Army Officer, I have been a witness to the fact that our people are easily tricked and provoked falling prey to the hate mon- gers on name of caste, creed, religion and regionalism. In the army, each officer identi- fies with the religion of his troops. In regiments where the soldiers are from more than one religion, the officers and all jawans attend the weekly religious prayers mainly referred as ‘Mandir Parade’ for all the faiths. Indian army genuinely be- lieves in two eternal truths - the oneness of God and vic- tory in operations. Both are so inter related and have been deeply rooted in Olive Green hearts that we fail to see any- thing beyond this eternal truth. On one occasion in 1992 in my mixed Arty Regiment where we traditionally had a Mandir and an ad hoc Gurud- wara, the CO proposed estab- lishing a ‘Sarv Dharama Sthal’ to enable co locating sacred symbols and books of all religions. Later on a Regi- mental celebration day , I was thrilled to see our Pandit Ji with a Granthi, a Maulvi, a Pastor all under one roof in theunit‘SarvDharamaSthal’ offering prayers and partici- pating in the function. In my opinion, there can never be a better portrait of national in- tegration or secularism. Amongst many other ac- tivities in Army, one of the most popular one is Sports and this binds the whole unit as one inseparable team. The team is represented by just single name of Paltan and the selection criteria is mer- it as there are no distinctions on caste, creed, regions or religions. Rather as a team captain of a Division Hand- ball team I never knew who belonged to which religion or region. We all prayed togeth- er and played together with perfect harmony . Lastly , it’s the operations that truly reflect the camara- derieandspiritdecorpsinthe well knit bonded organisation like Indian Army . There are floods of examples of display of oneness by the soldiers to defend their honour and safe- tyof thecountry-areligionin most true sense for any Fouji. I can recall an Operations roomof aDivisiondeployedin active operations. The staff and the troops who were exe- cuting the operational task on ground had faith in different religion. The operations were completed in 96 hours giving no breaks or rest to any of the team members. Everyone was contributing more than hun- dred percent and the morale and performance of troops on ground as amazing. It was in- deed an Army Unit with Mus- lim troops who caused maxi- mum damage to Pakistan posts.Attheendof operations when the celebrations were on, I asked myself did anyone even know or talk about caste, creed, religion or region of others - no not even once. So whyarewesomuchintocaste, creed, religion or regionalism in normal daily life. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL I For an Indian soldier, his religion is the Indian Army or the nation and the faith he belongs to doesn’t really matter as much while he is serving people of the nation. This is the single most reason why Indian Army still remains the most trusted institution of the country in the eyes of common man. I wish our entire country follows in the footsteps of our Army which is epitome of Secularism, National Harmony and Unity COL RAJESH BHUKAR The author is a retired Army officer SECULARISM IN INDIA IS MORE OF A SUBJECT OF POLITICS... SCallowsOBCquotainMPlocalbodypolls World Meteorological Organization says extreme weather wreaked heavy toll on human lives FOUR CRITICAL CLIMATE INDICATORS BROKE RECORDS IN 2021: UN REPORT Geneva (Agencies): Four critical global in- dicators of the climate crisis broke records in 2021, according to a UN report, from rising oceans to the levels of heat-trapping emis- sions in the atmos- phere. Greenhouse gas con- centrations, sea-level rise, ocean heat, and ocean acidification, set four new climate change records in 2021, the World Meteorologi- cal Organization (WMO) said Wednes- day . The UN World Mete- orological Organiza- tion (WMO) said these were clear signs of hu- manity’s impact on the planet, which was bringing long-lasting effects. Extreme weather, which the WMO called the day-to- day face of the climate emergency, wreaked a heavy toll on human lives and led to hun- dreds of billions of dollars in damages, the agency said. Droughts and floods triggered food price rises that have been ex- acerbated in 2022. The WMO’s State of the Global Climate in 2021 report also found the past seven years have been the hottest record- ed. “Today’s State of the Climate report is a dismal litany of hu- manity’s failure to tack- le climate disruption. Fossil fuels are a dead end – environmentally and economically,” said António Guterres, the secretary general of the UN. “The only sus- tainable future is a re- newable one. The good news is that the lifeline is right in front of us. Wind and solar are readily available and, in most cases, cheaper than coal and other fos- sil fuels. If we act to- gether, the renewable energy transformation can be the peace project of the 21st century .” Prof Petteri Taalas, the WMO secretary gen- eral, said: “Our climate is changing before our eyes. Human-induced greenhouse gases will warm the planet for many generations to come. Some glaciers have reached the point of no return and this will have long-term re- percussions in a world in which more than 2 billion people already experiencewaterstress. “Extreme weather has the most immedi- ate impact on our daily lives,” he said. “We are seeing a drought emer- gency unfolding in the Horn of Africa, recent deadly flooding in South Africa and the extreme heat in India and Pakistan. Early warning systems are critically required [to save lives] yet these are only available in less than half of WMO’s 187 member nations.” The world’s oceans absorb more than 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases and 2021 set a record. The increasing warmth in the ocean, which is ir- reversible over time- scales of centuries to millennia, has been es- pecially strong in the last 20 years. Much of the ocean experienced at least one strong ma- rine heatwave in 2021, the WMO said. The global sea level also reached a new re- cord high in 2021. It has increased by 10cm since 1993 and the rise is ac- celerating, driven by the melting of ice sheets and glaciers and the thermal expansion of the ocean. The rise im- perils hundreds of mil- lions of coastal dwell- ers, the WMO said, and increases the damage caused by hurricanes and cyclones. Kamal Hasan is the young, sober, self-sufficient but lonely teacher who rescues Sridevi from a brothel and then falls headlong in love with her even as he cares for her as a true caretaker, pla- tonically, giving one of his best perfor- mances so far. The ex- pressions on Kamal Haasan face as he falls in love with her and still maintains the child-like innocent trust that she has in him are actually amazing. I had always ad- mired Sridevi but she held me spellbound by the sheer expanse of the emotions which cross her beautiful wide eyes and expres- sive face as she re- gresses into a six-year- old. Just when you think that the act is going to be a little too much to bear and she will overdo the child- ish bit, Sridevi holds herself in and time and again proves what a consummate actress she was. Surmayee Ankhi- yon me Nana Munna Ek Sapna De jana and Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le both are wonderful songs and especially the latter one remains one of my favourites years down the line. The scenes between Kamal and Sridevi are cute and innocent but there is a bitter- sweet feeling to the entire affair as it is quite clear that even if Sridevi does, as such reciprocate his feelings she is not in her right mind and it is wrong ethically. However in the cli- max such as the pow- er of the sheer des- peration and helpless- ness which Kamal Hassan portrays That one cannot help but weep with him. I re- ally do think that it is the last scene as Sridevi recovered from her amnesia and is now a beautiful young woman both mentally and physi- cally and has no mem- ory of this young teacher who devoted so much time to her care, safety and well- being and totally re- jects him as not just a man but as a person and that breaks him. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva heworldof medicine has grown by leaps and bounds, and what better than the current pandemic to understand the growth of science, especially in the field of med- icine and health? However, there remain diseases and disordersthathavelittle or no cure. Aplastic anemia is one such condition that has an impact on all types of blood cells and can also turn out to be fatal. It leads to failure of bone marrow in the body which further results in no formation of any types of blood cells. While many may not have heard about aplastic anemia, there are several cases of it. Since aplastic ane- mia causes no formation of blood cells in the body, a per- son suffering from it needs to undergo a blood transfusion. However, even that may not help the patient. But a homoeopathic doc- tor in Indore, Madhya Pradesh,in conversation with First India has claimed that aplastic anemia can be treated with better results. Dr AK Dwivedi, a renowned homoeopathic doctor, said, “Anemia, as we all know, is a lack of blood in one’s body. However, aplastic anemia is a complete loss of blood or no formation of blood in the body . In this, there will be no blood formation in the body of a person detected with it. This requires the patient to undergo a blood transfusion for and bone marrow trans- plant. But even that may not guarantee complete treat- ment, as aplastic anemia is considered fatal.” “Homeopathic medicines have been proved to be effec- tive for treating aplastic ane- mia. The medicines help in stopping the failure of bone marrow development. Mean- ing, if the bone marrow con- tinues to develop in the body, so would all types of blood cells, and the body would be able to keep producing blood on its own,” claimed Dr Dwivedi. Aplastic Anemia is a rare and serious condition. There are several symptoms to it, the initial ones being high fever, fatigue, and head- ache. However, the serious symptoms include uncon- trolled bleeding from the nose, stool, etc. As per Dr Dwivedi, aplas- tic anemia often goes unde- tected in the early stages. And by the time it is detect- ed, the person’s condition starts to get worse. He fur- ther said that there are no set age criteria for patients. It can happen from a 15-year- old child to a senior citizen of 85 years of age. “It can happen in any age group. Re- cently, I treated a two-year- old child from Bihar. But, aplastic anemia is mostly found in people in the middle age group,” added Dr Dwive- di. He also said that aplastic anemia can also be found in patients with any type of cancer. “After undergoing chemotherapy, if a person’s bone marrow has had an im- pact, he or she can be prone to aplastic anemia,” he said. But how does one get it checked in the early stage? To this, Dr Dwivedi said, “Once must go through basic blood tests every few months. It is a very healthy habit. Not just aplastic anemia, but a check on your blood cells can help you detect any dis- ease at an early stage. One must also not avoid symp- toms such as fatigue.” While concluding, Dr Dwivedi said that aplastic anemia often goes undetected unless the serious symptoms start showing up, which is why he says that it is important to undergo regular health check-ups.
