be realized when peo-
ple will not get scared.

First India Bureau
Thane: Maharashtra
chief minister Eknath
Shinde has said Un-
ion minister Amit
Shah told him that if
they had promised
Shiv Sena president
Uddhav Thackeray of
making a party lead-
er as the CM in 2019,
why would they go
back on it.
Addressing the me-
dia late on Saturday
night after a function
here, Shinde said he
had met Amit Shah and
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi in New Delhi
in the presence of Ma-
harashtra Deputy CM
Devendra Fadnavis.
“During the discus-
sion, Shah told me that
we made Nitish Kumar
the chief minister of
Bihar when his party
JD(U) had less numbers
than the Bharatiya Ja-
nata Party (BJP). In Ma-
harashtra, if we have
given a word to you
(Sena), why would we
go back on it,” Shinde
said.
The CM also said he
will soon visit Ayodhya
in Uttar Pradesh, and
that the state cabinet
would soon be expand-
ed further.
According to Shinde,
the first cabinet expan-
sion—done 41 days after
he was sworn in as
CM—was delayed due
to various factors, in-
cluding some equations
and calculations, as
well as the situation in
which his government
was formed (in June
this year).
“In making me the
chief minister, senior
BJPleadershaveshown
they have a big heart.
The BJP is not always
after power,” he said.
After the 2019 Maha-
rashtra Assembly elec-
tions, when the BJP
won 105 seats and the
Sena bagged 56 seats,
Thackeray had claimed
the BJP did not keep its
promise of rotating the
chief ministerial post
with the Sena. The Shiv
Sena later tied-up with
the NCP and Congress
to form government in
the state.
Shinde said people of
Maharashtra had given
a clear mandate to the
then BJP-Sena alliance,
but things were not
good later on. “I had ex-
plained to (Uddhav)
Thackeray about the
problems many times,
but in vain. I had also
told him that in such a
situation, we cannot
face voters in future,”
he said.
Shinde further stated
that he had not revolted
against the Sena leader-
ship in June to become
the CM.
The CM said he still
feels like a Sena activist
and wants the state to
progress and people’s
problems to be ad-
dressed.
Shinde, however, did
not reply when asked
why he was not made
the CM or his name did
not feature in the list of
probables in 2019.
Shinde said the peo-
ple’s love and affection
was the reply to criti-
cism he faced after re-
volting against the Sena
leadership.
Eknath Shinde refutes claim of
BJP going back on 2019 promise
CM says he will visit Ayodhya soon and that the Maharashtra cabinet will be expanded further
POLITICAL DRAMA
“When (Devendra) Fadnavis an-
nounced my name for the CM’s post,
it was shocking for all, but we both
were aware of it. Fadnavis was very happy
with the arrangement. I have no ego. I don’t
want credit for any work. I admire his way of
working, understanding things, decision-
making, study of a subject and actions. I
want to deliver results and would always love
to take guidance from Fadnavis and his ex-
perience as the CM.”
Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister of Maharashtra
Nikhil Deshmukh
Mumbai: With Maha-
rashtra polls just a
little over two years
away, the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP)
will rely heavily on
welfare politics to
prepare the ground
for the general and
state elections, a sen-
ior party leader said.
“With a very short
period at our hand, the
Maharashtra BJP unit
has almost finalized a
plan to prioritize such
schemes and policies
over any big-ticket pro-
ject,” the senior leader
said.
Deputy Chief Minis-
ter Devendra Fadnavis
had indicated that the
new government, led by
Chief Minister Eknath
Shinde, will focus on
covering more popula-
tion under the Pradhan
Mantri Awas Yojana
(PMAY) in urban areas.
“Our review found
out that only 16% of ur-
ban beneficiaries have
built their homes under
the PMAY. In rural are-
as, the PMAY’s cover-
age is nearly 75%,” he
had said.
Another welfare
scheme that the state
government may prior-
itize would be the lay-
ing of pipelines that
supply drinking water
to every home in semi-
urban and rural areas
of Maharashtra under
the Jal Jeevan Scheme.
A senior BJP leader
said: “If we could suc-
ceed in increasing the
number of beneficiar-
ies under both these
schemes, it would have
a long-lasting impact…
and the goodwill could
reflect in…elections in
our favour.”
A former Maharash-
tra minister from the
BJP said that the Jal
Jeevan Scheme would
address very crucial
and long-pending prob-
lems in rural areas.
Under this scheme,
he said, rural parts of
the Marathwada and
Vidarbha regions
would be targeted, as
the maximum number
of people from these
areas suffer due to a
lack of assured drink-
ing sources. —PTI

Although at the time of

Three minor girls, aged
14-18, have come for-

church’s pastor, Rajku-

inappropriately touch
them. He would tell
them he is God’s son.
“He came to me when

I was stunned and
hence didn’t utter a
word. He did the same
thing 10-12 times on the
same night,” one victim
said, adding “He would
say it’s a spiritual act
and nobody should ob-
ject to it.”
According to senior
inspector, NRI Coastal
Police station, Ravindra
Patil, the pastor had re-
futed the allegations.
“We want to investi-
gate how long has it
been going on and
whether he molested
boys as well,” Patil said.
They also received a

girls in the shelter home
got pregnant, but the

Mumbai: With the re-
turn of inmates who
had been released on

SPIRITUAL SPEAK
Whatever action is performed by a great man,
common men follow in his footsteps, and
whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all
the world pursues. —Bhagavad Gita
elebrating 75
years of Inde-
pendence is an
emotional and
landmark mo-
ment in a country’s history
.
What’s even more important
is that we have been able to
hold on to democracy and
democratic values, even if at
times they get distorted,
when other countries in the
neighbourhood and else-
where in the world became
infamous as failed.
India is a nation on the
march in all its glory
, with all
its cultural richness and di-
versities despite a divide on
religious, ethnic and caste
lines. These fault-lines have
existed from years prior to
the Partition and, therefore,
need to be watched to prevent
them from deepening to pre-
vent a 1947 happening in 2047
when the nation comes to-
gether to celebrate a cente-
nary of Independence. Paki-
stan did not learn from 1947
therefore 1971 happened and
millions were massacred in
what is now Bangladesh.
In the last 75 years India
has made tremendous pro-
gress in the fields of science
and technology, space,
health, education, poverty
eradication, sanitation, in-
frastructure, sports and,
above all, in economy. The
success in each of these
fields has been noteworthy
and praised in the world. In
economy India is self-reliant
in agricultural and indus-
trial sectors and is ready to
take on the world by becom-
ing a five trillion dollar econ-
omy. No, that is not a pipe
dream but is very much in
the realm of possibility

On this auspicious occa-
sion let the country rise as
one to celebrate the festival
of hard-earned freedom and
pay tribute to those who
fought for it and those who
are taking it forward.

these fields has been

“Hele verden vil være venner med Indien”
(Everyone wants to be friend with India)
hese were the headlines of
prominent Newspapers of Den-
mark, when PM of India visited
Denmark and Eastern Europe
in May 2022. This statement re-
flects the importance of India
in the World prominence of
our leader. It was a delightful
sight to see President Joe Biden
of USA, walking up to Prime
Minister Narendra Modi to
shake hands and greet him dur-
ing G-7 Meet in Germany. It’s
the Prime Minister of India,
whom everyone wants to meet
because India matters to the
world today! India’s enviable
progress in last 75 years since
independence and exponential
rise in the last decade has cata-
pulted it onto the global centre
stage. Four things make a na-
tion state great are:
z Economic Power
z Military Power
z Soft Power
z Resilience to withstand
Adversities
z Some of the strengths of
this great nation are flagged
hereafter
GROWING PROSPERITY
India holds a beacon of hope for
the world economy which is
likely to plunge into the worst
recession, post COVID. Listed
below are some of the pointers
which make India an emerging
global economy
.
z World’s sixth-largest and fastest
growing economy with 7.5%
projected growth rate.
z India, with a population of 139
Crores and increasing per capita
income, forms the biggest
consumer market in the world.
z India is now emerging as the
biggest manufacturing hub and
poised to become the factory of
the world.
z India has the youngest
population in the world, while
China, Japan and Europe has
started greying.
z India has been leading the
digital world and it’s now
pioneer in opening Global
Capability Centers (GCC) by
MNCs 1400 MNCs have already
set up GCC in India providing
1.3 million jobs and earning
$36 Billion.
z India has also created 100
unicorns with valuations over $
01 Billion.
z India was a food-grain importer
in 20th century. Today, we are
net exporter of wheat, having
exported 1.8 million tonnes of
wheat to 12 countries.
z We are also the largest producer
of milk, pulses, jute products
and second largest producer
of rice, wheat, sugarcane,
groundnut, vegetables, fruits
and cotton.
MILITARY MIGHT
Armed Forces are integral part
of super power status. A strong,
well equipped and trained Army
is essential for a nation having
hawkish neighbours, with unset-
tled borders. The expenditure
incurred on Army, as “Force of
Deterrence” should be taken as
insurance for unhindered
growth of the nation. Let’s ex-
amine certain attributes of In-
dian Armed Forces, which make
them great-
z Fourth Strongest Armed Forces.
z Third Best Indian Air Force
(IAF).
z It also has the third-largest
defence budget in the world.
z Mature Nuclear Power with
stated ‘no first use’ policy
z Second largest Buyer of War
Equipments.
z India’s defence exports have
recorded nearly a eight-fold
increase between 2017 and
2022, growing from 1,520 to
13,000 cr.
SOFT POWER
India has been a rich ancient
civilization and holds a long re-
cord of being a mature and sta-
ble democratic nation for 75
years. India stands out as ex-
porter of knowledge, wisdom
and religious harmony
. India is
the promoter of Wellness of
body, mind and soul. Indian
food, dances, Cinema and per-
forming arts are liked world
over. India’s non-intrusive na-
ture and helping nature has won
appreciation, all over the world.
HIGH RESILIENCE
India has amply proved it’s re-
silience in critical times. Just
two examples showcase the In-
dian excellence in COVID man-
agement. India is among the
nations with the lowest per-
centage of infected persons and
the lowest mortality rate, if one
considers the entire popula-
tion. India is a shining example
of efficient vaccine administra-
tion to the largest population of
the world. India exported vac-
cine and life saving medicines
to more than 100 countries of
the world, including USA.
CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP
India has waited for centuries
for a rare opportunity to re-
claim its status as a world lead-
er. In order to catapult the in-
credible India into the high
pedestal of the super power, a
charismatic leadership was re-
quired and we found that in 21st
Century. Having excellent rela-
tions with all world leaders,
Prime Minister Narendra Mo-
diis emerging as the popular
choice to mediate towards end-
ing the Ukraine conflict. Prime
Minister Narendra Modi is un-
doubtedly the most Charismat-
ic leader in the world today.
CONCLUSION
In the geopolitics of 21st Cen-
tury, India has all the right in-
gredients to become a global
super power. India matters to
the world today and therefore
the world has now accepted In-
dia’s decision making as per its
national interests. If India could
manage its internal diversities
and harness the contradictions
with inclusive growth and NA-
TION FIRST agenda, 21st Cen-
tury will belong to India.

People living in low-lying areas have been

rainfall across Odisha has caused severe flood-
ing. Various areas have been submerged in the
state. Acres of farmland have been inundated

excess water from the dam may result in minor
flood in Mahanadi, informed Engineer-in-chief,
Water Resources Bijay Kumar Mishra.

energy profits of oil refin-

diesel they export but also

ing large volumes of fuel
made from discounted Rus-

Reached for comments, a

INFLATIONARY IMPACT ON
FMCG COS TO CONTINUE
IN QUARTER 2
New Delhi (PTI): Infla-
tionary pressure on some
raw material inputs for the
FMCG industry is abating
but the manufacturers ex-
pect its impact on price and
margins to continue in the
current quarter.
In the April-June quar-
ter, listed FMCG compa-
nies including - HUL, ITC,
Godrej Consumer Product,
Nestle, Dabur and Britan-
nia delivered mixed re-
sults, reporting an impact
on their margins and most-
ly
, a drop in volume in some
categories.
FMCG companies also
expect volume decline to
continue on the rural side
but see some stabilization
in the business and recov-
ery in demand, starting
from the third quarter of
FY23.
Companies such as Bri-
tannia Industries said that
it has taken necessary
price increases in Q1 which
were not covering inflation
at this point but a good part
of this will be covered by
the July-Sept quarter.
‘’We were not able to take
the entire price increase
during this quarter. We
have taken some price in-
creases in the first quarter
and we will complete that
in Q2 of this year,” said Bri-
tannia Industries MD
Varun Berry during recent
earnings while responding
to a query on the near-term
price increase.
In April-June, Britannia
reported a 13.24 percent de-
cline in consolidated net
profit to Rs 335.74 crore
while its sales were up 8.74
percent to Rs 3,700.96 crore.
When asked about the
inflationary scenario,
Dabur India CEO Mohit
Malhotra in his post-result
analyst call said inflation
would not abate in the sec-
ond quarter.
‘’And second quarter, we
will see margin compres-
sions, but I think in the
third quarter onwards
when we lap over inflation
of around 11%, 12%
through the last year, we
think that commodities
will soften. And there will
be a rollover price increase
impact happening in the
third quarter,” he said.
So, the third and fourth
quarters should see a bit
of softening of inflation
and price increases kick-
ing in, and the margin pro-
tection happening in the
second half of this fiscal,
he added.
Dabur India has report-
ed a marginal increase in
its consolidated net profit
to Rs 441.06 crore. Godrej
Consumer Products Man-
aging Director CEO Su-
dhir Sitapati in its earning
call said: ‘’With inflation-
ary pressures abating we
expect sharp margin recov-
ery from H2.’’

New Delhi (Agencies): In-

ond most important driver
of global growth in 2022
after China despite the
challenges posed by the
pandemic and the war in
Europe, Reserve Bank of
India’s (RBI) deputy gover-
nor, Michael D Patra, said.
The world’s third-largest
economy in terms of pur-
chasing power parity is go-
ing to contribute about 14%
of global growth this year,
he said, even while the
country faces the risk of
rising deficit due to higher
import bills on the back of
global commodity prices.
Patra said India can sus-
tain a current account
deficit of 2.5-3% without
getting into an external
sector crisis.
“A striking feature in In-
dia is that our growth is
home financed — invest-
ment is financed primarily
by domestic savings, with
foreign savings playing
only a supplemental role,”
Patra said.
India at present is the
third largest economy in
the world in terms of pur-
chasing power parity with
a share of 7% of global
GDP, after China’s 18% and
the USA’s 16%.
India’s GDP in market
exchange rates is expected

ing to soon review the ex-
emption-free new tax re-
gime with a view to making
it more attractive for indi-
vidual income taxpayers,
sources said.
Eventually, sources said,
the government aims to es-
tablish a system where
there are no exemptions
and the complex old tax re-
gime with exemptions and
deductions is terminated.
The Union Budget 2020-
21 introduced a new tax
regime. Taxpayers were
given the option to choose
between the old regime
with various deductions
and exemptions and the
new tax regime that offered
lower tax rates without ex-
emptions and deductions.
The intention behind the
move was to provide sig-
nificant relief to the indi-
vidual taxpayers and to
simplify the income-tax
law. Asked about the experi-
ence of the new tax regime,
sources said, there are
clear signs that people who
have finished their home
and education loans are
willing to shift to the new
tax regime as they have no
exemptions to claim.
Sources further said that
lowering of taxes in the
new regime would make
the new tax regime more
attractive. A similar tax re-
gime for corporate taxpay-
ers was introduced in Sep-
tember 2019 by significant-
ly lowering rates and re-

LACK OF
CONCERN TO
BLAME
The Maharashtra
Highway police have
been compiling the
road accident details
from 35 districts and
10 police commission-
erates in the state over
the last few years for
analysis and to take
preventive measures
to bring down the
number of road ac-
cidents and fatalities.
The data suggests that
in very few of the 35
districts and 10 police
commissionerates,
the number of road
accidents, fatalities,
and injuries has come
down so far this year
compared to the cor-
responding period last
year. The report attrib-
utes accidents largely
to a lack of concern on
the part of road users.
Road experts and
Regional Transport
Office (RTO) officials
said a flawed driving
license issuing sys-
tem, lack of effective
road safety education,
improved road condi-
tion and the rise in the
number of vehicles,
issuing online (e-
challan) instead of
visible enforcement,
and lack of proper
vehicle maintenance,
are some other major
reasons for the rise in
accidents. Meanwhile,
a retired RTO official
pointed out that most
drivers are not well
trained in defensive
driving skills.

BATTLE POTHOLE MENACE
By Zuber Ansari
Mumbai: While pot-
hole-riddled roads
are not an uncom-
mon sight in Mum-
bai, this monsoon,
traffic police seem
to have taken mat-
ters into their own
hands.
Not only have they
been taking pictures
of the potholes to inti-
mate the Brihanmum-
bai Municipal Corpo-
ration (BMC) but, at
times, traffic police-
men in uniform can be
seen filling the pot-
holes with discarded
debris and cement
sacks from construc-
tion sites just to en-
sure smooth move-
ment of vehicles. How-
ever, this temporary
patchwork doesn’t last
for more than a couple
of days.
An official from the
Bandra traffic police
said, “We have three
major hospitals in our
jurisdiction and multi-
ple schools. Manning
traffic on potholed
roads can be tedious
during peak office
hours and in evenings.
Ambulances and
school children are
stuck due to the poor
condition of roads.
There is also a rise in
accidents involving
two-wheelers due to
potholes this monsoon.

fused to comment. —PTI

s India celebrates its
76th Independence Day
on August 15, the feel-
ing of patriotism is ris-
ing in the hearts of all
citizens, and the tricol-

nation. To mark the event, the
government of India is organis-
ing several events under ‘
Azadi
ka Amrit Mohatsav’, with the
theme ‘Nation First, Always
First’. The government also
aims to hoist 200 million Tricol-
ours to mark the special occa-
sion. The government of India
has launched a new initiative,
“Har Ghar Tiranga”. While
launching the campaign, PM
Modi stated, “75 years back, it
was on this day that the country
adopted its present national
flag. Today
, we recall the monu-
mental courage and efforts of
all those who dreamt of a flag
for free India when we were
fighting colonial rule. We reiter-

plunged into cele-
brating Independ-
ence for the 75th
time and does so
with a high de-
gree of consterna-
tion and incertitude. With
a hand on the heart, no one
can say with total confi-
dence that we are out of
the dark and deep woods.
Despite that, it still hap-
pens to be our PLATINUM
JUBILEE !!
Are the properties of
this noble metal reflected
in our national character?
Are we a stable society
resistant to tarnishing?
Are we malleable and
flexible? Today we
should weigh ourselves
against the nobility of
this metal. Not on a
scale but scruti-
nized without
hyperbole to see if
we deserve to be
plumed with
Platinum!
Its silver-white colour
signifies maturity and ex-
perience. Are we really
mature and experienced
enough to shed our bag-
gage of the past and move
forward as one? Where is
the maturity when our po-
litical parties fight like
Gamecocks amid the big-
gest simultaneous chal-
lenges in our history? Can
we be called experienced
when we let the Hydra-
headed Monster of Dis-
ease, Low nutrition, For-
eign Invaders, illiteracy,
Crashed Economy and
deepening internal Strife
cry havoc and roam our
streets? Like Platinum, are
we resistant to tarnish?
How can that be true
when every man on the
street knows that Billions
of Dollars sitting in for-
eign banks are still being
snatched from the toil of
millions? Like this Noble
Metal, are we stable, malle-
able and flexible?
The biggest anchor for
stability is economic well-
being. We have only prom-
ised to disappoint again
and again. Garibi Hatao
slogan in the early 1970's
attracted millions of
hopeful and aspiring
votes. Today, 50 years
later, we have the world's
highest numbers living
in abject poverty
.
Are we not set in
stone as far as our
biases of caste,
religion, lan-
guage and
region are
c o n -
c e r n e d ?
Aren't all
s t a t e s
f a l l i n g
over each other to enact
laws banning workers
from other states, as if
they were from the Enemy
Territory?
Lastly, Platinum is the
best Catalyst for control-
ling pollution! Despite the
government's relentless
Swach Bharat campaign,
you will rarely find a sin-
gle immaculate street. De-
spite strict guidelines on
Traffic, you will find
scores defying death. De-
spite the multitude of food
inspectors across the coun-
try, you hear of thousands
of novel ways to contami-
nate milk, medicines,
sweetmeats, ghee, alco-
hol, soft drinks, etc.
With 280 crore hands,
we could pick up eve-
ry shred of rubbish from
our streets in barely a
week's effort.
Can't we pass this litmus
test of true Nationalism?
Writing lofty words on so-

ing large! Let's stop
switching between
roads of pessimism
and optimism. Let's
take the narrow and

Independence means the rebirth of
my country. We are living our life
happily because of our freedom fight-
ers. We can breathe freely. It is signifi-
cant for me because it gives me a
sense of Pride. I feel very proud when I
realise, our India was under British
rule for so many years, with the help
of the freedom fighters and the lead-
ers we are living our lives freely today.
My favourite freedom fighter is “ Bha-

wouldn’t have an independ-

Independence
Day means a lot
to me. It’s a great
day. We always re-
member our free-
dom fighters. It’s a
very proud move-
ment for all of us.
Now we are living
because of them.
They made a lot of
sacrifices for us. I
always feel grateful to everyone who
sacrificed their lives for the freedom
of India. Nobody enjoys slavery that’s
why Independence is most important
for everyone, everybody wants to be
independent. My favourite freedom
fighter is “Subhash Chandra Bose”.
He fought for our country and because
of him, we got the help of other coun-
tries. My favourite patriotic film is
“Border” which is directed by J. P. Du-
tta. The film is amazing. I cried so
many times watching the movie. My
favourite patriotic song is “Dekho
Veer Jawano”.
ndependence Day reminds every Indian
of the beginning of a new era, the start
of a new life free from bondage and slav-
ery. It is for the same reason that Inde-
pendence Day is given so much impor-
tance and celebrated in a very grand
manner across the country
. The 15th

At the moment it’s just
become a day where we
get holiday and spend time
with our family
, watching
parades. When I was in
Delhi we used to fly kites
but it is not happening any-
more. As you wake up in the
morning of Independence
day the most amazing
thing that happens is pa-
triotic songs start to play
on loud speakers. It reminds
us that millions of people of
our country have sacrificed
their life so that we can
live in our country
. We
did get freedom from
the people who were
dominating us and
literally destroying
us. I’m glad all our
ancestors, grand-

sacrificed their life.
They sacrificed for
the new generation
so that they can

something
to our life
which they
have. I’m just hop-

down the lane we
all get together
and celebrate
this day
