Singing Jana Gana Mana now compulsory in all madrasas
First India Bureau
Lucknow: Singing of
the national anthem
“Jana Gana Mana” has
been made compulsory
at all madrasas in Uttar
Pradesh from Thurs-
day, an official said
here.
The Registrar of the
Uttar Pradesh Madrasa
Education Board, SN
Pandey, issued an order
to this effect to all the
District Minority Wel-
fare Officers on May 9.
According to the deci-
sion taken in the board
meeting on March 24,
the singing of the na-
tional anthem at the
time of prayer at all
madrasas across the
state has been made
mandatory, Pandey
said.
He said regular
classes at the madrasas
began on May 12 after
the Ramzan holidays,
and the order came into
effect on the same day.
The order said that
before the commence-
ment of classes, the
national anthem will
be sung by teachers
and students from the
upcoming academic
session in all recog-
nised, aided and non-
aided madrasas in the
state.
The District Minori-
ty Welfare Officers
have been tasked to en-
sure compliance with
the order.
General Secretary of
Teachers’ Association
Madaris Arabia, Diwan
Sahab Zaman Khan,
said that till now at ma-
drasas, usually Hamd
(praises to Allah) and
Salam (salutations to
Muhammad) were re-
cited before the start of
classes.
The national anthem
was also sung in some,
but it was not compul-
sory. “Now it has been
made mandatory,” he
said.
The order comes af-
ter the state’s Minority
Welfare Minister
Dharampal Singh last
month emphasised
teaching nationalism
at madrasas. Minister
of State Danish Azad
Ansari had also said
that the government
wants the madrasa stu-
dents to be “full of pat-
riotism.” At present,
there are a total of
16,461 madrasas in Ut-
tar Pradesh and 560 of
them receive govern-
ment grants.

UNCEREMONIOUS
removal of DGP Goel
sparks off debate
First India Bureau
Lucknow: The uncere-
monious removal of UP
DGP Mukul Goel with
the government’s state-
ment against him has
led to debate in the offi-
cial circle in the state.
Never in the past the UP
government issued
such statement like
“negligence in duty, in-
dolence and lack of in-
terest n the work” while
shifting a DGP or any
other top officer head-
ing a department.
“This is unprece-
dented, I have never
seen such thing in the
past in UP”, said for-
mer UP DGP Vikram
Singh. Vikram Singh,
however, said that “the
government must have
some information
which led to such a sit-
uation”. While there
are unsubstantiated
charges of “hobnob-
bing with political ri-
vals especially Sama-
jwadi Party” against
him Goel was ADG (law
and order) when worst
communal riots broke
out in Muzaffarnagar
in 2013 during Akhilesh
Yadav’s government
(2012-17).
In 2000 during his
posting as SSP Saha-
ranpur he was suspend-
ed following murder of
BJP leader Nirbhay Pal
Sharma.
The officer was the
charged with not pro-
viding adequate securi-
ty to Sharma.
In the appointment
of Goel as DGP the gov-
ernment had also tried
to dispel the rampant
impression of “Thak-
ur-dominated” police
administration. How-
ever, he has now been
accused to “laxity in
work”. But sources
said since there were
impediments in perfor-
mance of his duties, he
again wanted to go
back to centre on depu-
tation as he has already
been empaneled to the
rank of DG.
Since 2010 Goel is the
fourth DGP to have
been removed from the
post before the comple-
tion of two-year tenure
as per the norms.

Lucknow: Aam’ is go-
ing to turn ‘khaas’ for
the second consecutive
year as the yield is
much lesser than ex-
pected.
Mango growers in
outskirts of Lucknow
say that extreme tem-
peratures in April have
taken a toll on all vari-
eties of mangoes.
“More than 20 %of the
fruit has been lost due
to temperature that
started rising in March
and continued till
April,” said Insram Ali,
President, All India
Mango Growers Associ-
ation.
Naseem Baig, Presi-
dent, Malihabad Phal
Mandi Samiti, said, “.
The flowering known as
‘baur’ got destroyed due
to heat. The high tem-
perature and scorching
heat have not only im-
pacted Dussehri but
also the late maturing
varieties like Chausa,
Langda, Safeda and
Lakhnauva, all of
which are also high on
export demand.”
Baig added, “When the
baur itself gets de-
stroyed it does not leave
much for the growers
for damage control.”
The saving grace, how-
ever, is the quality of
the fruit which is ex-
pected to be better be-
cause the yield is low.
“Since less yield
means more nutrition
for the surviving fruits,
Dussehri is expected to
be sweeter, juicier and
bigger in size and of
course, more expensive
too,” said Salim, anoth-
er mango grower.
Dussehri is expected
to hit the market by the
end of May or begin-
ning of June and the
price will be decided
after the harvest.
Mango crops are sen-
sitive to weather chang-
es during the flowering
stage. Weather condi-
tions affect the emer-
gence of panicles (baur)
which is the very first
stage of the crop and
usually happens in Jan-
uary
.
This year, even the
winters were quite
harsh and extended and
this made the panicles
emerge very late in
mid-February
. It is to be
noted that Uttar
Pradesh has at least
four lakh hectare under
mango cultivation in
north and central parts
of the state.

OFF-YEAR
Race for top cop
intensifies in UP
Lucknow: at least four
senior IPS officers are
doing the rounds. Of
these, the two hottest
contenders are said to
be Raj Kumar Vishwa-
karma, chairman of
the Uttar Pradesh Po-
lice Recruitment
Board, and DG Vigi-
lance DS Chauhan.
Also in the reckon-
ing are DG Training
RP Singh and DG CB-
CID Gopal Lal Meena.
DG Prisons Anand Ku-
mar, according to
sources, is also not far
behind.
The Yogi govern-
ment will soon send a
list of three of these
names to the Center for
approval to appoint the
successor of Goel.
While Chauhan en-
joys an impeccable
reputation and image,
Vishwakarma is ahead
in seniority. Hailing
from the 1988 batch,
Chauhan is at number
five in seniority but is
said to be the hot favou-
rite.
He has been working
as DG Intelligence
since February 15,
2020. It is pertinent to
mention that both
Chauhan and Anand
Kumar have done a
stint in Gorakhpur and
are known to the BJP
brass.
But Uttar Pradesh
Police Recruitment
Board chairman Raj
Kumar Vishwakarma
is also a powerful con-
tender for the plum
post if seniority is tak-
en as the criteria for
the appointment as the
new DGP of Lucknow.
That he has been
performing well can be
gauged from the fact
that he has been given
additional charge of
many major depart-
ments from time to
time.
He also enjoys a
good image and cama-
raderie among his IPS
colleagues.
In terms of seniori-
ty, other IPS officers
who fit the bill are DG
Training RP Singh and
DG CBCID Gopal Lal
Meena.
According to sourc-
es in the Home Depart-
ment, after the remov-
al of the DGP, the gov-
ernment is in no mood
to take any decision
that the opposition can
make an issue of.
Rules of appoint-
ment state that senior-
ity has to be kept in
mind in selecting the
officer, which means
the state government
will have to choose the
DGP from among the
officers of 1987-88
batch.
Then, the Union
Public Service Com-
mission will select 3
senior IPS officers as
per the norms. One of
them would be handed
over the baton of the
top cop.
Till then, one can
only keep fingers
crossed.

State targets to double production
of maize in the next five years
First India Bureau
Lucknow: In order to
boost farmers’ income,
the Uttar Pradesh gov-
ernment has set a tar-
get to double the state’s
maize yield from the
current 14.67 lakh MT
and increase produc-
tion to 27.30 lakh MT
by 2027.
Maize is the second
most important cereal
crop in the world in
terms of acreage and is
called the ‘Queen of
Cereals’.The govern-
ment has been direct-
ing the farmers to
plant maize to increase
the income from un-
conventional crops.
To meet the target,
along with increasing
the area, there will be
equal emphasis on in-
creasing the produc-
tion per quintal per
hectare. Farmers’ in-
come can be increased
with more cultivation
of maize, which is used
as food, feed (poultry
feed) and fuel (grain
based ethanol).
Maize is also used in
pharmaceutical, cos-
metic, lap, textile, paper
and alcohol industries.
Apart from this,
maize is eaten in the
form of flour, ‘dhokla’,
baby corn and popcorn.
The demand for
maize is continuously
increasing in the mar-
ket due to its multiple
uses. Now, the state
government will make
the farmers aware of
the cultivation of
maize so that the farm-
ers of the state get max-
imum benefit of this
increased demand.
Along with educating
them about the im-
proved methods of
farming, the govern-
ment will also increase
the rate of seed re-
placement.

The period from May
21 to June 21 will be cel-
ebrated as ‘Amrut Yoga’

According to Chief

be celebrated on a

the target of linking 7.5

even worse, failure by
the DGP to act on intel

intervention to prevent

What is even more sig-
nificant about Goel’s
removal is the fact that
he was recommended to
the post by none other
than Union Home Min-
ister Amit Shah about a
year back. Before he be-
came DGP, Goel served
as Additional Director
General of the Border
Security Force.
CM Yogi, however, had
red-flagged Goel’s close
association with Sama-
jwadi Party (SP) chief
Akhilesh Yadav, espe-
cially in the run-up to
the Uttar Pradesh state
assembly elections.
Goel was found to have
been regularly meeting
up with the SP leader
and he even believed
that there was an immi-
nent change in govern-
ment in UP with Akh-
ilesh set to take over,
and was an almost daily
visitor to the opposition
party leader’s office.
He had also served as
Additional Director
General (Law and Or-
der) when the infamous
Muzaffarnagar riots
had broken out in 2013
under the SP govern-
ment led by Akhilesh
Yadav.
MAIZE HAS A LOT OF GROWTH
POTENTIAL IN UTTAR PRADESH
The state has a lot of potential for increasing its yield.
The average yield per hectare of the country and Ut-
tar Pradesh is 26 and 17.88 quintals respectively. In
2021-22, it was increased to 21.63 quintals. The aver-
age yield of Tamil Nadu, the largest producer of maize,
is 59.39 quintals. According to experts, the average
yield per hectare is possible up to 100 quintals. The
production per hectare in United States of America is
about 960 quintals. In such a situation, there is a lot
of potential for increasing the yield through improved
farming methods.

CARRY OUT SURVEY BETWEEN
8AM AND 12PM
The mosque management committee had opposed
filming inside the mosque and also accused the
court-appointed commissioner of partiality. Amid
opposition, the survey was stalled on Saturday and the
Masjid Committee went to court to appeal for changing
the court-appointed commissioner. The counsel for
the Hindu side, Madan Mohan Yadav, said the court
has clarified that videography will be done inside the
Gyanvapi Masjid. The court said the survey could be
done between 8 am and 12 pm daily till its completion.
Truth will soon come out, says VHP after
Varanasi court’s order on Gyanvapi mosque
New Delhi:The Vishva Hin-
du Parishad on Thursday
hailed a Varanasi court
direction for completion of
a video survey of the Gyan-
vapi mosque premises by
May 17 and hoped that the
“truth” will soon come out.
The RSS affiliate appealed
to the mosque management
committee to “cooperate”
in the implementation of
the court’s direction and
slammed the objections
being raised against the
video survey of the Gyanva-
pi-Shringar Gauri complex
by a court-appointed
advocate commissioner.
‘‘The country should now
hope that they will definitely
place the truth before the
court after completing the
survey in five days. All
sides should cooperate
in that instead of raising
objections,” Vinod Bansal
said in a video message.
The VHP’s reaction came
after a district court earlier
in the day rejected a plea to
change the court-appointed
advocate commissioner for
conducting a video survey
of the Gyanvapi-Shring-
ar Gauri complex and
appointed two additional
advocate commissioners to
assist him.

ISRAEL - PALESTINE CONFLICT
LATEST STATUS AND INDIA’S POSITION
India has backed the
Palestinian right to self-
determination and
recognised PLO ruled
independent state of
Palestine with its capital in
East Jerusalem. India has
voted for Palestine to be
full member of UNESCO
and to “non-member”
observer state at the UN
without voting rights
ackground. The Israelite
Monarchy is believed to
have existed as early as
11th Century BC and de-
spite first great Diaspora
the Jews remained origi-
nal inhabitants of the Pal-
estinian region till driven
out by Romans in 66 A.D.
from their homeland. The
conflict arose when the
Jews returned to their
homeland in Palestine
which was under Muslim
Rule since 6th Century.
Britain’s support for the
creation of Jewish state
of Israel (Balfour Declara-
tion, 1917) escalated the
conflict. Establishment of
the state of Israel on May
14, 1948, provoked an
eight-month war with the
Arab states.
There have been series
wars and conflicts involv-
ing Israel, Arab nations,
Palestine, Hamas and
Hezbollah. The prominent
ones are the Six-Day War
1967,YomKippurWar1973,
intermittent attacks on
each other by Israel and
Palestinian militants,
1978 - 2000 and Israel Leba-
non war 2006. The region
has witnessed two intifa-
das or Palestinian upris-
ings against Israeli rule,
from 1987 to 1993 and 2000
to 2005. The first one end-
ed in 1993 with Self-rule in
the Gaza Strip and the
West Bank. The second
intifada ended when Is-
raeli Defence Forces (IDF)
vacated occupation of
Gaza in September 2005.
Peace Initiatives.
United Nations Security
Council Resolution 242,
passed on November 22,
1967, called for the ex-
change of land for peace.
Since then, many attempts
to establish peace in the
region have been made es-
pecially by US namely,
Camp David Accord 1978,
Oslo Accords 19931995,
Peace summit between
Yasser Arafat and Ehud
Barak in 2000, US initia-
tive of Jun 2009 2010,
Revival of peace talks in
2013 and Donald Trump
peace plan of 2020. But the
dispute between Israelis
and Palestinians over
land, refugees and holy
sites remain unresolved
mainly due to lack of trust
between both the sides,
failure to present mutual-
ly acceptable peace plans
on security, settlement,
control over Jerusalem
and involvement of mili-
tant outfits like Hamas
and Hezbollah.
Current Status. The
region has witnessed
fresh violence in May
2021. Hamas fired over
2,000 rockets at Israel and
Israeli military airstrikes
razed buildings in the
Gaza Strip. The month of
Ramadan has been
marked by violence in the
West Bank, East Jerusa-
lem and terror attacks in
Israel, killing and injur-
ing many civilians. In-
flammatory rhetoric and
violent clashes between
Palestinians and IDF have
taken place at the Holy
Sites in Jerusalem.
Causes of Conflict.
The major issues that
need to be resolved be-
fore a lasting peace can
be reached are:-

z Disputed Borders, Division
of the land and Strong
emotions relating to the
conflict on both sides.

z Israeli settlements in the
West Bank and Rights
of return of Palestinian
refugees.

z Status of Jerusalem. The
three largest Abrahamic
Religions - Judaism (Tem-
ple Mount), Christianity
(Church of Holy Sepul-
chre), and Islam (Al- Aqsa
Mosque) hold Jerusalem
as an important setting for
their religious and histori-
cal narratives.,

z Security concerns
over terrorism, safe
borders, incitements,
violence and Water shar-
ing issues.
INDIA’S POSITION
AND WAY AHEAD
India and Israel marked
30 years of full diplomatic
relations in 2022 and both
countries have moved
closer since then and have
developed strategic part-
nership in areas such as
defence, security, agricul-
ture, water management
and innovation. Today the
Indo Israeli trade (exclud-
ing Defence) stands at 6.5
bn USD with balance of
trade in favour of India.
India has backed the
Palestinian right to self-
determination and recog-
nised PLO ruled inde-
pendent state of Palestine
with its capital in East
Jerusalem. India has vot-
ed for Palestine to be full
member of UNESCO and
to “non-member” observ-
er state at the UN without
voting rights. India has
extended monetary assis-
tance and implemented
construction projects in
Palestine and has a mar-
ginal trade to the tune of
30 million USD.
India has so far adopted
a balanced posture while
dealing with both sides.
During the visit of Pales-
tinian President to India
in 2017 the customary line
in support of East Jerusa-
lem as the capital of Pal-
estine was dropped and
Ramallah was excluded
from Indian PM’s itiner-
ary during his visit of Is-
rael. Subsequently Indian
PM separately visited Ra-
mallah in February 2018,
and called for an inde-
pendent Palestinian state.
Way Ahead. India’s re-
lationship with Israel has
to be on its own merits, in-
dependent and separate
from India’s relationship
with the Palestine. Indian
support to commence ne-
gotiations by both sides to
resolve all conflict issues
and achieve a two-state so-
lution to the problem re-
mains critical. If India
joins Arab-Israeli scientif-
ic and technological initia-
tives, where Israel is seen
not necessarily as an ene-
my
, but, rather, a potential
partner in achieving pro-
gress in the Middle East,
then India will be able to
protect and secure its
growing stakes and vital
interests in the region. As
India is emerging global
player in politics and eco-
nomics, de-hyphenating
Israel and Palestine be-
comesanessentialingredi-
ent of our foreign policy

New Delhi: The Army

locating radars, which
would add significantly
to its defences along
the China front.
The system, called
the Swathi, enables sol-

rockets are being fired
upto a distance of 50
kilometres. The sys-
tem is capable of simul-

New Delhi (PTI): A
team of researchers at
the Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT) Mandi
has developed efficient
remote powering and
communication tech-
nology for futuristic
IoT-based applications
such as battery-free
wireless cameras, wire-
less monitors, sensors
and skin-attachable
sensing platforms.
The findings of this
study were published in
the Wireless Networks,
a prominent journal.
The Internet of
Things (IoT) is a collec-
tion of objects that can
exchangedatawitheach
other through the Inter-
net. IoT devices range
from ordinary house-
hold appliances in a
“smart” home to sophis-
ticated industrial and
scientific tools. These
smart things are
equipped with sensors,
chips, and software that
must be powered and
stay in communication
with other devices at all
times.
According to the
team, simplistic power
sources like batteries
may be unsuitable for
such applications be-
cause of the constancy
of power required, and
because some of these
“things” may be embed-
ded or hidden, which
makes changing batter-
ies difficult. “We have
developed a cooperative
model, in which, back-
scatter communication
and radiofrequency en-
ergy harvesting devices
acttogethertooptimally
allocate the resources
such as time and anten-
na weights,” said Shi-
vam Gujral, PhD schol-
ar, School of Computing
and Electrical Engineer-
ing, IIT Mandi.
“In backscatter com-
munication, as before,
power is transmitted
via radio waves, but
with or without the
need for a dedicated
transmitter. Instead, RF
signals available in the
vicinity, such as WiFi,
cell phone signals, etc,
are harnessed through
reflection and backscat-
ter to power the IoT ob-
jects,” Gujral said.

BJP HAS TURNED
UP INTO ‘RAPE
STATE’, SAYS
AKHILESH YADAV
Samajwadi Party (SP) president
Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday
alleged the ruling BJP
government has “bulldozed” law
and order, and has made Uttar
Pradesh a “rape state”, where
women are not safe. The state
government under the BJP has
proved to be insensitive towards
women, Yadav said in a statement
here. “The BJP government in
Uttar Pradesh has bulldozed law
and order. It has now become
most unsafe for women. Schools,
homes, police stations and now
in hospitals, rapes are taking
place. Uttar Pradesh has been
made a rape state under the
second government of the BJP. It
has proved insensitive towards
women,” he said. Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath should not give
false advertisements of law and
order to deceive people, Yadav
said. The SP chief alleged that in
Kanpur, the police picked up a
mother-daughter duo without any
FIR, and the woman killed herself
after being harassed.
The rape incidents of Lalitpur,
Aligarh and Mirzapur have
brought bad name to the state, he
added. “Under the double-engine
government, the rate of crime has
risen with double speed. Police
stations have become hotspots of
anarchy. While development has
been set aside by the
government, hatred and activities
to divide the society are being
promoted,” Yadav claimed. —PTI

Two policemen, including a
Station House Officer, were
suspended days after a man
attempted self-immolation outside

who was allegedly kidnapped,
officials said on Thursday. The
man, identified as Sanjay Nagar,
claimed that his daughter, a class

activists to refer to alleged
conversion through marriage.
Confirming the development,

20-year-old woman was
allegedly raped in this

the two, who are from

One of the two ac-

She has alleged that the
accused took her to a se-
cluded place near her
village under Atrauli
police station limits on
April 14. They allegedly
forced her to consume a
spiked beverage there
and raped her when she
lost consciousness.
However, the rape
charges were not men-

woman said that her
family did not lodge any
complaint immediately
after the incident fol-

some elders and threats
by the accused. The
matter came to light af-

Lucknow: For the
country’s oldest party,
getting the worst defeat
in the most populous
state is like turning a
nightmare into reality.
Victory is a distant goal
for the party; the imme-
diate challenge before it
is survival.
Notably, after 3 de-
cades, for the Congress
party, which got a
thumping majority of
269 seats in UP in 1985, it
has become difficult to
even touch the ten-seat
mark today
. In the year
2017,despitethealliance
with the SP, Congress
could win a meager sev-
en seats with a 6.25 per-
cent vote share. But in
the assembly elections
this time, the number of
seats of the Congress
party has slipped down
to two seats.
The vote percentage
has plummeted to 2.33
percent. The Congress
party has been com-
pletely wiped out even
from Amethi, and Rae
Bareli, which were once
considered bastions of
the Nehru-Gandhi fami-
ly
. The Congress party,
which contested 402
seats, could get the sec-
ondpositioninonlyfour
seats; the electoral secu-
rities of more than nine-
ty percent of the party’s
candidates were forfeit-
ed. In many seats, this
party got fewer votes
than NOTA. The party’s
UP state president Ajay
Kumar Lallu was also
badly defeated.

‘STRANGULATION OF JUSTICE’:
MAYA BACKS AZAM KHAN
Lucknow (PTI): Com-
ing out in support of
senior Samajwadi Par-
ty leader Azam Khan,
BSP supremo Mayawati
on Thursday said his
continued incarcera-
tion is being regarded
as a “strangulation of
justice” by the common
man. Mayawati also hit
out at the BJP govern-
ment for allegedly tar-
geting the poor, Dalits,
tribals and Muslims
and harassment of its
political opponents.
In a series of tweets,
the BSP president said,
“In Uttar Pradesh and
other BJP ruled states,
like the Congress, the
manner in which poor,
Dalits, tribals and Mus-
lims are being harassed
by making them vic-
tims of atrocities and
fear is very sad, where-
as their (BJP) kindness
is continuing in the af-
fairs of others.”
SpeakingupforKhan,
the BSP president said,
“In this sequence, the
matter of continuous
hateful and terror (like)
action by the UP govern-
ment on its opponents
and keeping senior
MLA Mohammad Azam
Khan in jail for about
two-and-a-half years is
in the news which, in
the eyes of the people, if
not strangulating jus-
tice then what.”
Khan, a senior SP
leader and MLA from
Rampur, is currently in
jail on several charges
including corruption.
He has been lodged in
Sitapur jail for over two
years.
In a major relief to
him, the Allahabad
High Court on Wednes-
day granted Khan bail
in the case of illegal pos-
session of enemy prop-
erty
. Khan, a former
state minister, has got
bail in 88 out of 89 cases.
He will be released
from jail only after the
bailisgrantedinthelast
case. Mayawati, a for-
merUttar Pradeshchief
minister, also slammed
the anti-encroachment
drive carried out in
some places including
the national capital by
civic authorities.
New Delhi (ANI): The
Supreme Court on
Thursday issued notice
to the Uttarakhand gov-
ernment on a plea of
Jitendra Narayan Singh
Tyagi, formerly known
as Wasim Rizvi, against
the HC order rejecting
his bail in connection
with the investigation
into the hate speeches at
the Hardiwar Dharam
Sansad held in Decem-
ber last year.
A bench of Justices
Ajay Rastogi and
Vikram Nath sought the
State’s response on the
bail plea of Jitendra Ty-
agi while observing that
they are “spoiling the
whole atmosphere”.
“Before they ask to sen-
sitiseotherstheyhaveto
sensitise themselves
first. They are not sensi-
tised. This is something
which is spoiling the
whole atmosphere,” the
bench said while refer-
ring to the controversial
Haridwar Dharam San-
sad event. Tyagi, who
wasoncethechief of UP
Shia Waqf Board before
accepting Hindusim,
has challenged the
March 8 order of the Ut-
tarakhand High Court
which denied him bail.
“File the counter. We
are not concerned about
what happened, we have
to take the totality of
matter, punishment, pe-
riod of custody, etc.,”
said the apex court.

of its political opponents
‘PEOPLE ARE BEING MADE
VICTIMS OF FEAR TERROR’
Mayawati slammed the
anti-encroachment drive
carried out in some
places including the
national capital by civic
authorities. “The manner
in which migrants and
people are being made
victims of fear and terror
in the name of encroach-
ment by adopting a
malicious attitude in
many states and their
livelihood is being
snatched, raises many
questions ,” she added.
Azam Khan’s hearing deferred due
to ‘absence of papers’, returns to jail
Sitapur (ANI): Samajwadi
Party leader Azam Khan,
who is lodged in Sitapur jail
for 38 months, was taken
to Lucknow on Thursday to
appear before the CBI court
today. However, due to the
absence of a few docu-
ments on the part of the
CBI, the hearing could not
take place and the SP leader
was set back to the Sitapur
jail. The next date for the
hearing will be given by
this evening. He was taken
to the court in connection
with a case concerning an
alleged Jal Nigam recruit-
ment scam which is being
investigated by the Central
agency. The investigation
of the alleged scam, which
was registered by the SIT
in 2017, was handed over
to the CBI. A total of eight
persons, including the
then minister Azam Khan,
Director Jal Nigam, and the
Project Manager, involved
in the alleged scam, were
granted anticipatory bail in
the case. However, Khan
was sent back to Sitapur
jail as charges could not
be framed against him
today due to the absence
of papers on the part of
the CBI in the case. After
Khan was produced in the
court, his advocate, Kalim
Rehman, said, “Today Azam
Khan was produced before
the court for the framing of
charges against him. The
court had sought some
documents from the state
government which were not
provided today.
Azam Khan appears in CBI court in Lucknow on Thursday.

married woman
once said, “There
arenotmanythings
in life which can be
equal to the happi-
ness of a successful
marriage. And
there are not many things
worsethananunhappymar-
riage.”Thismakesmarriage
sound like a gamble. A cou-
ple can either win a lifetime
of happiness or experience
much pain.
Why do so many mar-
riages fail to bring happi-
ness? It is usually because
the wedded pair banks too
much on romantic love, an
emotion that is derived
more from one’s imagina-
tion and less from reality
.
Romantic love causes the
couple to think that all
their problems will be
solved by being happily
married. But marriage
multiplies these problems
which then results in frus-
tration. This love tempts
them to distort the facts,
where the woman may hide
her flaws through makeup
and the man may be in debt
and might not let her know
about it or he may claim to
be earning more than he is.
Infatuation is temporary
but true affection is not
short-sighted.Ittakesalong-
rangeviewof matters.There
isasayingthat‘loveisblind.’
But a person with true love
has eyes to see qualities, pos-
sibilities and faults. Such a
person can spare himself
from disillusionment and
disappointment.
In some ways, marriage
is like travelling through
an area one has never vis-
ited before. If we set out
with only a vague idea of
how to reach our destina-
tion, we are surely taking a
risk. This risk can be re-
duced if one consults some-
one who has made this
journey before.
Often persons have
useless thoughts and
considerations when
choosing a partner
than they do when bet-
ting on a horse, a counsellor
said. Honeymoons reveal
that two persons just do not
always want the same thing
at the same time. They must
try to complement and not
compete with each other.
Does marriage give a li-
cence for thoughtless
speech? Even if a partner is
right and has the best of in-
tentions, a harsh remark
still hurts. The other part-
ner could become sullen,
clam up and refuse to
talk or can retaliate
with similar
harshness. Both
partners must
consider how
costly their
w o r d s
can be in terms of the oth-
er’s self-esteem.
Is either partner indiffer-
ent, insensitive or blind to
the other’s needs, prob-
lems, feelings and wishes?
Being suspicious, over-pos-
sessive, rude, vulgar or dis-
respectful brings about a
gradual alienation and se-
rious psychosomatic ef-
fects in married life.
Many marriages gener-
ate discontent due to un-
reasonable expectations.
Some are dissatisfied
because they
imagine that
other couples
are happier
than them. The
reality is, that
there are un-
der the surface
problems in eve-
ryone’s life.
Difficulties,
cracks and rifts in a rela-
tionship develop over a pe-
riod of time, due to a series
of small irritations and
disagreements. A marriage
cannot be made happy
within a week or a month.
The process can be com-
pared to repairing the walls
of a house that is falling
apart. Kindness can be ap-
plied just as a mason ap-
plies cement brick by brick.
One can cement the fam-
ily bonds and promote the
well-being of the other
partner by not demanding
that everything be done his
or her way. Spontaneously
doing little things to make
the other person feel appre-
ciated and needed – the
very things that were
quickly done during court-
ship can lift the spirits.
A couple married for 70
years said, “the secret of
happiness is trust, trying
not to argue and a common
goal of helping others.”
These ideas can sound old
fashioned, but they work.
One can feel that what
works for another person
may not work for us be-
cause people have different
problems and personalities.
Nobody is perfect, hence
living with each other’s
weaknesses and having a
giving attitude are the foun-
dation of a marriage. A
woman, who struggled for
many years says, “I’ve
learned that it takes three
‘Cs’ to make a good mar-
riage – consideration, coop-
eration and communica-
tion. We failed to cultivate
them. We were busy mak-
ing a ‘good life’ and we be-
gan falling apart.”
A man after getting di-
vorced said, “I realized that
there’s more to life than
dancing and having fun at
the disco. I asked myself, do
I hope to meet someone
with whom to share my life
in a bar?” Kindness gives
special meaning to mar-
riage. There is a tendency
to think of oneself first.
Showing unselfish love

wards.

  • 1. Singing Jana Gana Mana now compulsory in all madrasas First India Bureau Lucknow: Singing of the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” has been made compulsory at all madrasas in Uttar Pradesh from Thurs- day, an official said here. The Registrar of the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Board, SN Pandey, issued an order to this effect to all the District Minority Wel- fare Officers on May 9. According to the deci- sion taken in the board meeting on March 24, the singing of the na- tional anthem at the time of prayer at all madrasas across the state has been made mandatory, Pandey said. He said regular classes at the madrasas began on May 12 after the Ramzan holidays, and the order came into effect on the same day. The order said that before the commence- ment of classes, the national anthem will be sung by teachers and students from the upcoming academic session in all recog- nised, aided and non- aided madrasas in the state. The District Minori- ty Welfare Officers have been tasked to en- sure compliance with the order. General Secretary of Teachers’ Association Madaris Arabia, Diwan Sahab Zaman Khan, said that till now at ma- drasas, usually Hamd (praises to Allah) and Salam (salutations to Muhammad) were re- cited before the start of classes. The national anthem was also sung in some, but it was not compul- sory. “Now it has been made mandatory,” he said. The order comes af- ter the state’s Minority Welfare Minister Dharampal Singh last month emphasised teaching nationalism at madrasas. Minister of State Danish Azad Ansari had also said that the government wants the madrasa stu- dents to be “full of pat- riotism.” At present, there are a total of 16,461 madrasas in Ut- tar Pradesh and 560 of them receive govern- ment grants. Never in the past the UP government issued such statement like “negligence in duty, in- dolence and lack of in- terest n the work” while shifting a DGP or any other top officer head- ing a department. “This is unprece- dented, I have never seen such thing in the past in UP”, said for- mer UP DGP Vikram Singh. Vikram Singh, however, said that “the government must have some information which led to such a sit- uation”. While there are unsubstantiated charges of “hobnob- bing with political ri- vals especially Sama- jwadi Party” against him Goel was ADG (law and order) when worst communal riots broke out in Muzaffarnagar in 2013 during Akhilesh Yadav’s government (2012-17). In 2000 during his posting as SSP Saha- ranpur he was suspend- ed following murder of BJP leader Nirbhay Pal Sharma. The officer was the charged with not pro- viding adequate securi- ty to Sharma. In the appointment of Goel as DGP the gov- ernment had also tried to dispel the rampant impression of “Thak- ur-dominated” police administration. How- ever, he has now been accused to “laxity in work”. But sources said since there were impediments in perfor- mance of his duties, he again wanted to go back to centre on depu- tation as he has already been empaneled to the rank of DG. Since 2010 Goel is the fourth DGP to have been removed from the post before the comple- tion of two-year tenure as per the norms. TALK OF TOWN Sudden move of the government seems to be ‘unprecedented’ Former DGP Mukul Goel. A CAREER FULL OF UPS AND DOWNS Goel has been recipient of Gallantry award and other service medals for his performance. Goel’s long career has been full of ups and downs. First India Bureau Lucknow: Aam’ is go- ing to turn ‘khaas’ for the second consecutive year as the yield is much lesser than ex- pected. Mango growers in outskirts of Lucknow say that extreme tem- peratures in April have taken a toll on all vari- eties of mangoes. “More than 20 %of the fruit has been lost due to temperature that started rising in March and continued till April,” said Insram Ali, President, All India Mango Growers Associ- ation. Naseem Baig, Presi- dent, Malihabad Phal Mandi Samiti, said, “. The flowering known as ‘baur’ got destroyed due to heat. The high tem- perature and scorching heat have not only im- pacted Dussehri but also the late maturing varieties like Chausa, Langda, Safeda and Lakhnauva, all of which are also high on export demand.” Baig added, “When the baur itself gets de- stroyed it does not leave much for the growers for damage control.” The saving grace, how- ever, is the quality of the fruit which is ex- pected to be better be- cause the yield is low. “Since less yield means more nutrition for the surviving fruits, Dussehri is expected to be sweeter, juicier and bigger in size and of course, more expensive too,” said Salim, anoth- er mango grower. Dussehri is expected to hit the market by the end of May or begin- ning of June and the price will be decided after the harvest. Mango crops are sen- sitive to weather chang- es during the flowering stage. Weather condi- tions affect the emer- gence of panicles (baur) which is the very first stage of the crop and usually happens in Jan- uary . This year, even the winters were quite harsh and extended and this made the panicles emerge very late in mid-February . It is to be noted that Uttar Pradesh has at least four lakh hectare under mango cultivation in north and central parts of the state. CROP STOP lll Rising temperatures in March and April played a role in affecting the panicles of the mangoes in Lucknow With predictions of low yield. ‘aam’ set to become ‘khaas’ this year OFF-YEAR Race for top cop intensifies in UP Lucknow: at least four senior IPS officers are doing the rounds. Of these, the two hottest contenders are said to be Raj Kumar Vishwa- karma, chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Po- lice Recruitment Board, and DG Vigi- lance DS Chauhan. Also in the reckon- ing are DG Training RP Singh and DG CB- CID Gopal Lal Meena. DG Prisons Anand Ku- mar, according to sources, is also not far behind. The Yogi govern- ment will soon send a list of three of these names to the Center for approval to appoint the successor of Goel. While Chauhan en- joys an impeccable reputation and image, Vishwakarma is ahead in seniority. Hailing from the 1988 batch, Chauhan is at number five in seniority but is said to be the hot favou- rite. He has been working as DG Intelligence since February 15, 2020. It is pertinent to mention that both Chauhan and Anand Kumar have done a stint in Gorakhpur and are known to the BJP brass. But Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment Board chairman Raj Kumar Vishwakarma is also a powerful con- tender for the plum post if seniority is tak- en as the criteria for the appointment as the new DGP of Lucknow. That he has been performing well can be gauged from the fact that he has been given additional charge of many major depart- ments from time to time. He also enjoys a good image and cama- raderie among his IPS colleagues. In terms of seniori- ty, other IPS officers who fit the bill are DG Training RP Singh and DG CBCID Gopal Lal Meena. According to sourc- es in the Home Depart- ment, after the remov- al of the DGP, the gov- ernment is in no mood to take any decision that the opposition can make an issue of. Rules of appoint- ment state that senior- ity has to be kept in mind in selecting the officer, which means the state government will have to choose the DGP from among the officers of 1987-88 batch. Then, the Union Public Service Com- mission will select 3 senior IPS officers as per the norms. One of them would be handed over the baton of the top cop. Till then, one can only keep fingers crossed. FROM PG 1 UP govt plans to create international record on International Yoga Day DGP GOEL FAILED TO ACT ON INTELLIGENCE INPUTS State targets to double production of maize in the next five years First India Bureau Lucknow: In order to boost farmers’ income, the Uttar Pradesh gov- ernment has set a tar- get to double the state’s maize yield from the current 14.67 lakh MT and increase produc- tion to 27.30 lakh MT by 2027. Maize is the second most important cereal crop in the world in terms of acreage and is called the ‘Queen of Cereals’.The govern- ment has been direct- ing the farmers to plant maize to increase the income from un- conventional crops. To meet the target, along with increasing the area, there will be equal emphasis on in- creasing the produc- tion per quintal per hectare. Farmers’ in- come can be increased with more cultivation of maize, which is used as food, feed (poultry feed) and fuel (grain based ethanol). Maize is also used in pharmaceutical, cos- metic, lap, textile, paper and alcohol industries. Apart from this, maize is eaten in the form of flour, ‘dhokla’, baby corn and popcorn. The demand for maize is continuously increasing in the mar- ket due to its multiple uses. Now, the state government will make the farmers aware of the cultivation of maize so that the farm- ers of the state get max- imum benefit of this increased demand. Along with educating them about the im- proved methods of farming, the govern- ment will also increase the rate of seed re- placement. First India Bureau Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh plans to create a world record of sorts on International Yoga Day on June 22 by con- necting at least 7.5 crore people with yoga to mark the 75th anni- versary of India’s inde- pendence. The period from May 21 to June 21 will be cel- ebrated as ‘Amrut Yoga’ month. According to Chief Secretary, Durga Shan- kar Mishra, the Inter- national Yoga Day will be celebrated on a grand scale. Mishra has directed all District Magistrates to prepare a micro plan to achieve the target of linking 7.5 crore people and make it available to the Ayush department. However, plans are afoot to hold yoga pro- grammes at the Ganga ghats on the occasion of World Yoga Day on June 21. Cities along the Gan- ga river will hold such programmes on the riv- er banks. Kanpur District Magistrate, Neha Shar- ma has already direct- ed all the departments and their heads to en- sure compliance of di- rectives issued for the Yoga Day to be held on June 21 and submit their work plan. Continued from page 1 even worse, failure by the DGP to act on intel inputs through timely intervention to prevent the flare-up.” What is even more sig- nificant about Goel’s removal is the fact that he was recommended to the post by none other than Union Home Min- ister Amit Shah about a year back. Before he be- came DGP, Goel served as Additional Director General of the Border Security Force. CM Yogi, however, had red-flagged Goel’s close association with Sama- jwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, espe- cially in the run-up to the Uttar Pradesh state assembly elections. Goel was found to have been regularly meeting up with the SP leader and he even believed that there was an immi- nent change in govern- ment in UP with Akh- ilesh set to take over, and was an almost daily visitor to the opposition party leader’s office. He had also served as Additional Director General (Law and Or- der) when the infamous Muzaffarnagar riots had broken out in 2013 under the SP govern- ment led by Akhilesh Yadav. MAIZE HAS A LOT OF GROWTH POTENTIAL IN UTTAR PRADESH The state has a lot of potential for increasing its yield. The average yield per hectare of the country and Ut- tar Pradesh is 26 and 17.88 quintals respectively. In 2021-22, it was increased to 21.63 quintals. The aver- age yield of Tamil Nadu, the largest producer of maize, is 59.39 quintals. According to experts, the average yield per hectare is possible up to 100 quintals. The production per hectare in United States of America is about 960 quintals. In such a situation, there is a lot of potential for increasing the yield through improved farming methods. All sides should cooperate in that instead of raising objections,” Vinod Bansal said in a video message. TOP TWEETS n a landmark judgment to protect free- dom of speech the Supreme Court denied unlimited time to the government to review the obnoxious Sec- tion 124A of the Indian Pe- nal Code, which was being grossly misused by states to suppress dissent and criticism, and stayed its operation.ItaskedtheCen- tral government and those in the states to refrain from registering fresh cases till the law is reviewed as per Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s submission that the Centre has prepared a draft for the reconsidera- tion of law. On that ground the Centre wanted the case to be deferred which the Supreme Court rightly did not agree to. For all those who could not voice their opinions for fear of being jailed for months, the verdict comes as a major relief. However, how draconian or soft it will be in its new avatar after the review can’t be predicted but the govern- ment would want to retain some such weapon in its armoury to keep dissent- ers in check. During arguments on Monday the Centre re- quested for time to re-ex- amine IPC Section 124A but the bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Jus- tices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli wanted to know if the government will put the law in abeyance while it is under review. The sedition law was struck down by the Pun- jab and Allahabad High Courts in the fifties for be- ing against freedom of speech, but in 1962 the Su- preme Court upheld its validity in the Kedar Nath Singh versus State of Bi- har. It has taken 60 years for the apex court to grant citizens the much-needed freedom. SC’S HISTORIC STEP AGAINST SEC 124A In a landmark judgment to protect freedom of speech SC denied unlimited time to the government to review the obnoxious Section 124A of the IPC, which was being grossly misused by states to suppress dissent and criticism, and stayed its operation I ISRAEL - PALESTINE CONFLICT LATEST STATUS AND INDIA’S POSITION India has backed the Palestinian right to self- determination and recognised PLO ruled independent state of Palestine with its capital in East Jerusalem. India has voted for Palestine to be full member of UNESCO and to “non-member” observer state at the UN without voting rights ackground. The Israelite Monarchy is believed to have existed as early as 11th Century BC and de- spite first great Diaspora the Jews remained origi- nal inhabitants of the Pal- estinian region till driven out by Romans in 66 A.D. from their homeland. The conflict arose when the Jews returned to their homeland in Palestine which was under Muslim Rule since 6th Century. Britain’s support for the creation of Jewish state of Israel (Balfour Declara- tion, 1917) escalated the conflict. Establishment of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948, provoked an eight-month war with the Arab states. There have been series wars and conflicts involv- ing Israel, Arab nations, Palestine, Hamas and Hezbollah. The prominent ones are the Six-Day War 1967,YomKippurWar1973, intermittent attacks on each other by Israel and Palestinian militants, 1978 - 2000 and Israel Leba- non war 2006. The region has witnessed two intifa- das or Palestinian upris- ings against Israeli rule, from 1987 to 1993 and 2000 to 2005. The first one end- ed in 1993 with Self-rule in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The second intifada ended when Is- raeli Defence Forces (IDF) vacated occupation of Gaza in September 2005. Peace Initiatives. United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, passed on November 22, 1967, called for the ex- change of land for peace. Since then, many attempts to establish peace in the region have been made es- pecially by US namely, Camp David Accord 1978, Oslo Accords 19931995, Peace summit between Yasser Arafat and Ehud Barak in 2000, US initia- tive of Jun 2009 2010, Revival of peace talks in 2013 and Donald Trump peace plan of 2020. But the dispute between Israelis and Palestinians over land, refugees and holy sites remain unresolved mainly due to lack of trust between both the sides, failure to present mutual- ly acceptable peace plans on security, settlement, control over Jerusalem and involvement of mili- tant outfits like Hamas and Hezbollah. Current Status. The region has witnessed fresh violence in May 2021. Hamas fired over 2,000 rockets at Israel and Israeli military airstrikes razed buildings in the Gaza Strip. The month of Ramadan has been marked by violence in the West Bank, East Jerusa- lem and terror attacks in Israel, killing and injur- ing many civilians. In- flammatory rhetoric and violent clashes between Palestinians and IDF have taken place at the Holy Sites in Jerusalem. Causes of Conflict. The major issues that need to be resolved be- fore a lasting peace can be reached are:- z Disputed Borders, Division of the land and Strong emotions relating to the conflict on both sides. z Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Rights of return of Palestinian refugees. z Status of Jerusalem. The three largest Abrahamic Religions - Judaism (Tem- ple Mount), Christianity (Church of Holy Sepul- chre), and Islam (Al- Aqsa Mosque) hold Jerusalem as an important setting for their religious and histori- cal narratives., z Security concerns over terrorism, safe borders, incitements, violence and Water shar- ing issues. INDIA’S POSITION AND WAY AHEAD India and Israel marked 30 years of full diplomatic relations in 2022 and both countries have moved closer since then and have developed strategic part- nership in areas such as defence, security, agricul- ture, water management and innovation. Today the Indo Israeli trade (exclud- ing Defence) stands at 6.5 bn USD with balance of trade in favour of India. India has backed the Palestinian right to self- determination and recog- nised PLO ruled inde- pendent state of Palestine with its capital in East Jerusalem. India has vot- ed for Palestine to be full member of UNESCO and to “non-member” observ- er state at the UN without voting rights. India has extended monetary assis- tance and implemented construction projects in Palestine and has a mar- ginal trade to the tune of 30 million USD. India has so far adopted a balanced posture while dealing with both sides. During the visit of Pales- tinian President to India in 2017 the customary line in support of East Jerusa- lem as the capital of Pal- estine was dropped and Ramallah was excluded from Indian PM’s itiner- ary during his visit of Is- rael. Subsequently Indian PM separately visited Ra- mallah in February 2018, and called for an inde- pendent Palestinian state. Way Ahead. India’s re- lationship with Israel has to be on its own merits, in- dependent and separate from India’s relationship with the Palestine. Indian support to commence ne- gotiations by both sides to resolve all conflict issues and achieve a two-state so- lution to the problem re- mains critical. If India joins Arab-Israeli scientif- ic and technological initia- tives, where Israel is seen not necessarily as an ene- my , but, rather, a potential partner in achieving pro- gress in the Middle East, then India will be able to protect and secure its growing stakes and vital interests in the region. As India is emerging global player in politics and eco- nomics, de-hyphenating Israel and Palestine be- comesanessentialingredi- ent of our foreign policy . The findings of this study were published in the Wireless Networks, a prominent journal. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a collec- tion of objects that can exchangedatawitheach other through the Inter- net. IoT devices range from ordinary house- hold appliances in a “smart” home to sophis- ticated industrial and scientific tools. These smart things are equipped with sensors, chips, and software that must be powered and stay in communication with other devices at all times. According to the team, simplistic power sources like batteries may be unsuitable for such applications be- cause of the constancy of power required, and because some of these “things” may be embed- ded or hidden, which makes changing batter- ies difficult. “We have developed a cooperative model, in which, back- scatter communication and radiofrequency en- ergy harvesting devices acttogethertooptimally allocate the resources such as time and anten- na weights,” said Shi- vam Gujral, PhD schol- ar, School of Computing and Electrical Engineer- ing, IIT Mandi. “In backscatter com- munication, as before, power is transmitted via radio waves, but with or without the need for a dedicated transmitter. Instead, RF signals available in the vicinity, such as WiFi, cell phone signals, etc, are harnessed through reflection and backscat- ter to power the IoT ob- jects,” Gujral said. Victory is a distant goal for the party; the imme- diate challenge before it is survival. Notably, after 3 de- cades, for the Congress party, which got a thumping majority of 269 seats in UP in 1985, it has become difficult to even touch the ten-seat mark today . In the year 2017,despitethealliance with the SP, Congress could win a meager sev- en seats with a 6.25 per- cent vote share. But in the assembly elections this time, the number of seats of the Congress party has slipped down to two seats. The vote percentage has plummeted to 2.33 percent. The Congress party has been com- pletely wiped out even from Amethi, and Rae Bareli, which were once considered bastions of the Nehru-Gandhi fami- ly . White prints contrast with the brightly blue coloured attire. The colour white is said to be neat, easy, and absolute. It fills in firm opposition to the colour black, and its aims are straightfor- ward. As white light in- cludes all the shades of the spectrum, it’s a comprehensive, unbi- ased colour, choosing no particular hue and denying to take sides. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva married woman once said, “There arenotmanythings in life which can be equal to the happi- ness of a successful marriage. And there are not many things worsethananunhappymar- riage.”Thismakesmarriage sound like a gamble. A cou- ple can either win a lifetime of happiness or experience much pain. Why do so many mar- riages fail to bring happi- ness? It is usually because the wedded pair banks too much on romantic love, an emotion that is derived more from one’s imagina- tion and less from reality . Romantic love causes the couple to think that all their problems will be solved by being happily married. But marriage multiplies these problems which then results in frus- tration. This love tempts them to distort the facts, where the woman may hide her flaws through makeup and the man may be in debt and might not let her know about it or he may claim to be earning more than he is. Infatuation is temporary but true affection is not short-sighted.Ittakesalong- rangeviewof matters. There isasayingthat‘loveisblind.’ But a person with true love has eyes to see qualities, pos- sibilities and faults. Such a person can spare himself from disillusionment and disappointment. In some ways, marriage is like travelling through an area one has never vis- ited before. If we set out with only a vague idea of how to reach our destina- tion, we are surely taking a risk. This risk can be re- duced if one consults some- one who has made this journey before. Often persons have useless thoughts and considerations when choosing a partner than they do when bet- ting on a horse, a counsellor said. Honeymoons reveal that two persons just do not always want the same thing at the same time. They must try to complement and not compete with each other.  Does marriage give a li- cence for thoughtless speech? Even if a partner is right and has the best of in- tentions, a harsh remark still hurts. The other part- ner could become sullen, clam up and refuse to talk or can retaliate with similar harshness. Both partners must consider how costly their w o r d s can be in terms of the oth- er’s self-esteem. Is either partner indiffer- ent, insensitive or blind to the other’s needs, prob- lems, feelings and wishes? Being suspicious, over-pos- sessive, rude, vulgar or dis- respectful brings about a gradual alienation and se- rious psychosomatic ef- fects in married life. Many marriages gener- ate discontent due to un- reasonable expectations. Some are dissatisfied because they imagine that other couples are happier than them. The reality is, that there are un- der the surface problems in eve- ryone’s life. Difficulties, cracks and rifts in a rela- tionship develop over a pe- riod of time, due to a series of small irritations and disagreements. A marriage cannot be made happy within a week or a month. The process can be com- pared to repairing the walls of a house that is falling apart. Kindness can be ap- plied just as a mason ap- plies cement brick by brick. One can cement the fam- ily bonds and promote the well-being of the other partner by not demanding that everything be done his or her way. Spontaneously doing little things to make the other person feel appre- ciated and needed – the very things that were quickly done during court- ship can lift the spirits. A couple married for 70 years said, “the secret of happiness is trust, trying not to argue and a common goal of helping others.” These ideas can sound old fashioned, but they work. One can feel that what works for another person may not work for us be- cause people have different problems and personalities. Nobody is perfect, hence living with each other’s weaknesses and having a giving attitude are the foun- dation of a marriage. A woman, who struggled for many years says, “I’ve learned that it takes three ‘Cs’ to make a good mar- riage – consideration, coop- eration and communica- tion. We failed to cultivate them. We were busy mak- ing a ‘good life’ and we be- gan falling apart.” A man after getting di- vorced said, “I realized that there’s more to life than dancing and having fun at the disco. I asked myself, do I hope to meet someone with whom to share my life in a bar?” Kindness gives special meaning to mar- riage. There is a tendency to think of oneself first.
