Social Aspects of the Roaring Twenties Essay
Social Aspects of the Roaring Twenties
The beliefs of the Greenwhich Village, a group of authors, poets, playwrights, and artists, during the 1920's, included the idea of salvation by the
children, i.e., encouraging children to devolp their own personalities, and cultivating their own selfā€“expression. They upheld the idea of paganism, the
body is a temple in which there is nothing unclean, a shrine to be adorned by the ritual of love. They upheld idea of living for the moment; the idea
of liberty; the belief of female equality; the idea of psychological adjustment, to remove repression's so we can adjust ourselves to any situation and
be happy; and the idea of changing place, they believed that by living in Europe a person can become...show more content...
Women were supposed to maintain a moral superiority, yet this morally responsible figure was becoming non existent. Women's roles in society were
changing with the times. Once suffrage was reached women began to express themselves. They gained the right to vote. They cut their hair into a bob
style and shortened their skirts. Many women gained a rebellious spirit. Some females remained set in their traditional roles in society. Those however
who were swept away by the rebellious spirit indulged themselves in the pleasures of the time.
These rebellious women were coined "Flappers." The flapper was a national hero to the young. "The flapper offended the older generation because she
defied conventions of acceptable feminine behavior"(Flapper html, 1). These women were characterized by artist John Held and writer F. Scott
Fitzgerald as " the with it personification of the Jazz Age" (Farrington, 97). Her setting was the speak easy or the country club. She defied her mother,
often smoked, and drank. Her behavior was often expressed in talk more than action. Another characteristic of these radical females is that she knows
all the latest dance moves. For both men and women marathon dancing became the craze of the youthful. Partners would dance until they passed out.
The music of the times became jazz.
The twenties was also known as the "Jazz Age." Jazz groups usually consisted of string bass,

1920'sā€“ SOCIAL HEIRACHY AND CHANGING LIFESTYLES
The 1920's was a fascinating and excting time in history, known for prosperity and change for the better, with a strong sense of independence and
freedom. In my essay I will be discussing the social changes that took place during this particular era.
1920s "The Roaring Twenties" beginning of change
The 1920s have been remembered as the "Roaring Twenties" as they brought an economic buoyancy and allowed many people to afford the things they
most desired, bringing a cultural upgrading. This was brought on by a number of factors, and made it an era to remember.
Americans were finally learning how to live the life they wanted. The "Roaring Twenties" was the year of economic prosperity, it was...show more

1920's And Today
Living in the 1920's was very different to todays lifestyle as living expenses were much lower and monthly incomes far less, with fewer people (that
is a smaller population group) in the world during this era, and far less cars on the roads.
During this time families lived altogether and generally the husband was the breadwinner, going off to work and bringing home the monthly income,
while the wife was expected to stay home and bake and care for the family being the homemaker and teaching the children good values, respect and
obedience.
Today many families are broken, leaving the mother to go out to work and take care of the children while also expected to bring home the monthly
income. Fathers take far less responsibility creating a generation of unruliness and general disobedience and

The 1920's: The Roaring Twenties
The 1920's, known as the Roaring Twenties, was a luxuriant decade characterized by technological advancement, economic affluence, unprecedented
leisure opportunities, and consumerism. Urbanization and innovation shifted traditional values of rural societies to a new way of life. Availability of
white collared occupations increased the replacement of blue collared jobs. Women achieved social transformations while experiencing their new
sense of freedom. Contrary to the Roaring Twenties flourishing era, the prosperous period was also labeled as being a time of anxiety. This age
obtained the frantic reputation due to the effects of the prohibition, a cultural civil war, and lack of government regulation. The first cause of the
apprehensive atmosphere of the era is the Prohibition which caused increased criminality. The legal effort of the Prohibition, in dealing with social

The remodeling of a society of homogeneous people with similar mindset revived after World War I due to patriotism and xenophobia. As social change
was flourishing, development of various ideas caused Americans to feel as if their traditional values were being threatened. The migration of African
Americans from the rural South to the urban North became a threat to white Americans due to the expansion of black culture within society. African
American introduced jazz and blues music and literacy movement, known as the Harlem Renaissance, to society creating uneasiness for whites. In
result, citizen of Indiana and Illinois joined the Ku Klux Klan which represented the return of all traditional values modern ones replaced. Similar to
this event, the Red Scare, Antiā€“Communist movement, encouraged the discrimination of immigrants by the use of severe laws which lead to the

The Modern Age : The Roaring Twenties
The Roaring Twenties began in the 1920s. It was known as the Modern Age because it brought changes and innovations. The Roaring Twenties took
place right after World War I. Millions of people died and it was a horrible event. Soldiers returned and everyone went through a hard time. People
wanted to forget this catastrophic event so when they returned they tried to forget the past and live the moment. Many wanted to to enjoy themselves,
they began to value convenience and leisure over hard work and denial. World War I brought changes. People started to drink, party, and enjoying life.
However, the 1920s was not only butterflies and rainbows. It was a really hard time for farmers, women, African Americans, and immigrants.
The Roaring Twenties was also known as the age of consumerism. There was a lot of spending. The United States was a wealthy country with a
high standard of living. People thought bigger and more was better. They made expenses to buy big houses and great cars. Everyone wanted to live
lavishly. Many cities like New York and Chicago grew rapidly. Skyscrapers were being built. A lot of it was because of transportation. People started
to move from rural areas to cities and towns. There was a lot of innovations. Women had more independence and more freedom to wear the latest
fashions like miniā€“skirts. They started to show off more skin and wearing makeup. Furthermore, women were giving the right to vote when the 19th

Expository Essay The Roaring Twenties and The Jazz Age are both labels for the time period of the 1920s. This time period involved drastic social
along with political change that emphasized artistic and cultural dynamism. Evidence of this is that jazz music and dancing developed, the flapper
redefined modern womanhood, Art Deco popularized, and many inventions of great significance came about that continued to fuel this age. Also, the
majority of U.S. people were now living in cities rather than on farms for the first time, contributing to the doubling of the nation's wealth. This

It stands out because it is a collection of years that brought much success to the nation while being wedged between two disasters. World War One
and The Stock Market Crash of 1929. The end of World War One was the beginning because coming out of the war spiraled the nation into a period
of economic boom. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 put an end to the famous time period because it left the nation in a state of devastation that lead
to the Great Depression, one of the worst times in American History. It has been said that "The Jazz Age" or "TheRoaring Twenties" was the best time

New styles of behaviour had been introduced such as women who wore their hair long, had ankle length dresses, and long cotton stockings. These
women who dressed in such a way were called Flappers. Flappers were women who wore short dresses and wore make up. Eventually, women were
even granted the right to vote. The women of the 1920's strived for a position of equality for both men and women in society.
Americans were finding new ways to earn a better living through an overall period of booming business and higher wages for workers. Many
Americans began investing in the stock exchange in the hope of having a prosperous return, while others chose to make their fortune in such illegal
activities as bootlegging. But there was a downside to the American dream as many blacks were prosecuted. As well as some laws against the Blacks
some whites set up an organisation called the Ku Klux Klan which used violence to intimidate Black people. The Ku Klux Klan was a violent
organisation who not only stirred up racial hatred but also religious hatred. In the 1920s membership of this

The Positive Impact Of The Roaring Twenties
Postā€“war years have significant impacts on a society's economy, bringing an abundance of celebration, cherished moments and highlighting the end of
the plagued events of war and loss. With the end of such an afflicted time period, the arrival of solidarity and unification in society usually follows. The
Roaring Twenties accomplished many positive changes in Canadian society, building the path it needs to follow to become a great nation and
progress into the future. The time period was regarded as a time of excitement and prosperity concerning the fads, fashions, and entertainment, as well
as the freedom many people gained with the end of the war. Furthermore, the Roaring Twenties can also be seen as a time of positive change due to a
variety of factors such as Canada's developing autonomy and political relationship with Britain, pushing Canada to become an independent nation.
Another factor would be the Canadian industries and economy that flourished during the 1920s which allowed many Canadian businesses to prosper
and enabled Canadians to acquire and enjoy an improved quality of life. Finally, the change in societal status and role of women established the starting
point of gender equality between men and women, as well as the recognition of the various contributions that women were capable of bringing to
society.
Before the 1920s, Canada made decisions on its domestic matters independently. It was only during the 1920s that Canada began to take an independent

experienced a recession that was followed by a period of unlimited prosperity. Although the United States encountered both positive and negative
experiences, it proved to be very influential in the future. The 1920's were definitely "Roaring" in more ways than one. There were major changes in

The eighteenth amendment was adopted in 1919 and took effect in 1920. During Prohibition, rival gangs in many gig cities tried to control the illegal
sale of alcohol. Al ?Scarface? Capone and George ?Bugs? Moran were known as the 20th Century Gangsters. In 1929, on Valentines Day, Al Capone?s
men dressed up in police uniforms and shot members of the Moran gang. Prohibition during the Roaring Twenties was one of many changes that
American Society encountered.
One of the major assessments that changed American Society was the Stock Market Crash of 1929. In the early 1920?s the stock market
skyrocketed because of the average individual investor. Prices on the New York stock began to surge ahead. Americans felt like they could make a
lot of money by investing it in banks. This led investors to pour all of their savings into common stocks. Later in September, the market wavered and
a drastic downward change took place in the stock market. Banks were shut down and investors lost all of their savings literally overnight. The stock
market crash of 1929 was a drastic economic event that Americans still fear could happen again. This also was a major change in American society
and in the American way of life.
Many new industries emerged throughout the Roaring Twenties that are still playing a major role in today?s society. The consumer product industry

Three Main Reasons: The Roaring Twenties
"The Roaring Twenties" most accurately depicts the 1920 era for three main reasons, the progression in politics, advancement in technology, and
because of how the lifestyle was changing. Starting with the election of William G. Harding, to the invention of movies and the radio and finally with
the creation of the flapper. The 1920s sure were roaring! The first reason "The Roaring Twenties" became a title for the 1920s is because of the
progression in politics. Just coming out of World War I the United States needed to be turned around. In the early parts of the 1920s the United States
was going through a process called demobilization, which is "The process... or transition from wartime to peacetime production level and employment
levels". When 4.5 million men coming back from war and seeking employment and putting the recently employed women back out of work and with
the start of numerous riots, America was in desperate need of a president who could lead them out of the turmoil. In the election of 1920, Warren G.
Harding was elected president. "Harding ran a proā€“business platform that promised tax revision, higher tariffs, limits on immigration, and some aid to
farmers." Harding also promised that America would return to normal during his presidency which captured the attention of the distraught Americans.
Harding did many great things for America such as merging companies which brought "greater efficiency and high profits" to businesses. Towards the

The 1920's were a time of drastic change in America. All of the inventions that were made and all the new laws were passed during this time was a
major factor of the 20s. It was also the time of The Jazz Age and the flappers. But the 20s had a negative aspect to it which people call "the dark
side of the twenties". Crime rates were increasing because of the prohibition of alcohol. People began configuring groups and fought against others to
win control over a specific area. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were two of the many people who strived to commit the best crime they could
think of, but the crime they committed was brought to trial and ended up being known as the trial of the century. Leopold and Loeb both came from

evidence that was found, like Leopold's glasses lying next to Bobby's body, and the ransom letter that had been typed with the same typewriter as
the one he uses in school, they had no choice but to confess that they were guilty. Clarence Darrow was hired to defend Leopold and Loeb during
the trial. Darrow was very well known and he had a respectable reputation. It was a bit of a surprise when he accepted the offer of being the
defendant for this trial because he usually defends the underprivileged and people who have no money. Darrow claimed that his central reason of
why he accepted this trial was because he wanted to make the point that the death penalty is never the answer because it does not deter criminals
from committing more crimes. Darrow made the wise choice of making Leopold and Loeb plead guilty in order for the judge to make the decision
instead of the jury. He brought in psychiatrists and they described Leopold and Loeb as mentally ill. Later, the state brought in psychiatrists and proved

"Roaring Twenties"
As Canadians take a glance on the 1920s, it was a time period that was compacted with happiness and tremendous misery. At the beginning of the
twenties era, Canadians experienced life as a celebration. It was an age filled with nonā€“stop dancing, and tuning to the radio. This was a generation
before the T.V. was fabricated and so people listened to the radio for enjoyment and music. The twenties was a time period that many Canadians
remember as the "Roaring Twenties". The Roaring Twenties was a decade comprised mainly of improvements, in many aspects. Due to this being said,
roaring twenties should indeed deserve its name, because big advances both scientific and technological were being implemented, the ideal women we
know now were starting to form, and last but not the least jazz music was being introduced(a.k.a "the Jazz Age"). And these were just some of the
reasons, about why the "Roaring Twenties" deserves it's nickname.
In the Roaring Twenties, technology mainly cars, really took a step forward. Before the 1920's, cars were not a "fuss" among middle class people.
However, soldiers who fought in WWI bought cars when they came back victorious from the war; causing many people to deduce how easy it was
to travel that way, and suddenly everyone desired one. Cars gave people more free time and made their lives more accessible and effortless (Henry
Ford advertised the new model T, which was the primary reason behind people purchasing cars). The number of

name Roaring Twenties due to the major change in political and social living. This period of time changed the way humans lived and viewed
everyday life. With the start of many inventions including the automobile and the radio, social life began to improve for some, on the other hand the
earlier generations saw this to be a coming of difference in social and racial views. This period had it reasons for being "Roaring". With the
ratification of the 19th Amendment, came new and improved rights for women and allowed women to have voting rights; this gave women a new
sense of power. Women took on new roles in white collar jobs, something that only men had been doing for generations before. With this brought a new

The 1920s were an exciting and fascinating time in American history. An old Victorian nation had transformed into a vibrant, modernized America.
Often called "The Roaring Twenties", this time featured the famous slicked back hair, vibrant Flappers, and of course, marathon dances. From inflated
economics to unprecedented invention, forces collided to produce the most explosive decade of the century.
"The Roaring Twenties" encapsulates a captivating story that began with the return of young soldiers from the front of World War I. Those who had
once courageously sacrificed their lives for America came home. They came home to adopt a new, regenerated lifestyle. President Warren Harding had

in the latter half of the 1920s, a Scottish engineer named John Baird developed an innovative device at the Royal Institution in London. Within two
years, Baird became the first person to transmit images to and from London and New York. He designed electrical recordings, the stereoscopic
television, and even color television.
Nevertheless, not everyone benefited from the revolution of technology. America was on its way to becoming a service economy. The use of
machinery productivity increased while decreasing the demand for manual labors. Furthermore the demand for food remained relatively the same. But
as a result, food prices and profits dropped. The small farmer lacked the capital to buy the necessary equipment. Therefore he lost his viability and was
sometimes tempted to merge with other farmers in order to compete.
As the 1920s climaxed, there was an emergence of the confident face of femininity. Women gained insight on their true womanhood and took on more
unconventional lifestyles. For example, they changed their fashion standards. What was once strict Victorian uniform transformed into a sleek, trendy
look. Hairstyles and clothing incrementally became shorter and more revealing. This led to the birth of a new woman in 1926. She dressed

The "Roaring Twenties" were an age of dramatic political, social, and economic change. Women wanted new and improved rights and the nation's
wealth doubled between 1920 and 1929. Culture, values, and the technology of America changed and it had only just begun. The "Roaring Twenties"

Louis Armstrong was a stupendous trumpet player whom made many historical recordings in the 1920s. Also, during this age all the people wanted to

time was Ernest Hemingway, who wrote "A Farewell to Arms". He depicted the lives of men and women's values during and after WWI (Yoonhee).
These were some of the most known authors of the Twenties. The Jazz Age also led to an increase of drunkenness throughout the

  • 1. Social Aspects of the Roaring Twenties Essay Social Aspects of the Roaring Twenties The beliefs of the Greenwhich Village, a group of authors, poets, playwrights, and artists, during the 1920's, included the idea of salvation by the children, i.e., encouraging children to devolp their own personalities, and cultivating their own selfā€“expression. They upheld the idea of paganism, the body is a temple in which there is nothing unclean, a shrine to be adorned by the ritual of love. They upheld idea of living for the moment; the idea of liberty; the belief of female equality; the idea of psychological adjustment, to remove repression's so we can adjust ourselves to any situation and be happy; and the idea of changing place, they believed that by living in Europe a person can become...show more content... Women were supposed to maintain a moral superiority, yet this morally responsible figure was becoming non existent. Women's roles in society were changing with the times. Once suffrage was reached women began to express themselves. They gained the right to vote. They cut their hair into a bob style and shortened their skirts. Many women gained a rebellious spirit. Some females remained set in their traditional roles in society. Those however who were swept away by the rebellious spirit indulged themselves in the pleasures of the time. These rebellious women were coined "Flappers." The flapper was a national hero to the young. "The flapper offended the older generation because she defied conventions of acceptable feminine behavior"(Flapper html, 1). These women were characterized by artist John Held and writer F. Scott Fitzgerald as " the with it personification of the Jazz Age" (Farrington, 97). Her setting was the speak easy or the country club. She defied her mother, often smoked, and drank. Her behavior was often expressed in talk more than action. Another characteristic of these radical females is that she knows all the latest dance moves. For both men and women marathon dancing became the craze of the youthful. Partners would dance until they passed out. The music of the times became jazz. The Roaring Twenties Essay 1920'sā€“ SOCIAL HEIRACHY AND CHANGING LIFESTYLES The 1920's was a fascinating and excting time in history, known for prosperity and change for the better, with a strong sense of independence and freedom. In my essay I will be discussing the social changes that took place during this particular era. 1920s "The Roaring Twenties" beginning of change The 1920s have been remembered as the "Roaring Twenties" as they brought an economic buoyancy and allowed many people to afford the things they most desired, bringing a cultural upgrading. During this time families lived altogether and generally the husband was the breadwinner, going off to work and bringing home the monthly income, while the wife was expected to stay home and bake and care for the family being the homemaker and teaching the children good values, respect and obedience. Today many families are broken, leaving the mother to go out to work and take care of the children while also expected to bring home the monthly income. Fathers take far less responsibility creating a generation of unruliness and general disobedience and

In other words everything changed. Not one part of common life was unaffected. Exciting new events happened in sports, entertainment, science, politics, communication and transportation. It was the age of prohibition, it was the age of prosperity, and it was the age of downfall. The twenties were the age of everything. The 1920's: The Roaring Twenties The 1920's, known as the Roaring Twenties, was a luxuriant decade characterized by technological advancement, economic affluence, unprecedented leisure opportunities, and consumerism. Urbanization and innovation shifted traditional values of rural societies to a new way of life. Availability of white collared occupations increased the replacement of blue collared jobs. Women achieved social transformations while experiencing their new sense of freedom. Contrary to the Roaring Twenties flourishing era, the prosperous period was also labeled as being a time of anxiety. This age obtained the frantic reputation due to the effects of the prohibition, a cultural civil war, and lack of government regulation. Starting with the election of William G. Harding, to the invention of movies and the radio and finally with the creation of the flapper. The 1920s sure were roaring! The first reason "The Roaring Twenties" became a title for the 1920s is because of the progression in politics. Just coming out of World War I the United States needed to be turned around. All of the inventions that were made and all the new laws were passed during this time was a major factor of the 20s. It was also the time of The Jazz Age and the flappers. But the 20s had a negative aspect to it which people call "the dark side of the twenties". Crime rates were increasing because of the prohibition of alcohol. People began configuring groups and fought against others to win control over a specific area. It was a bit of a surprise when he accepted the offer of being the defendant for this trial because he usually defends the underprivileged and people who have no money. Darrow claimed that his central reason of why he accepted this trial was because he wanted to make the point that the death penalty is never the answer because it does not deter criminals from committing more crimes. Darrow made the wise choice of making Leopold and Loeb plead guilty in order for the judge to make the decision instead of the jury. He brought in psychiatrists and they described Leopold and Loeb as mentally ill. Later, the state brought in psychiatrists and proved that they were completely Get more content on HelpWriting.net
