2. Human Development Index
It was developed by the United Nations and indicates the degree of Human
Development that exists in each country
It is the indicator of the dignified and healthy standard of living that people have
Health levels are evaluated according to life expectancy at birth, and that of
education is measured by the average years of schooling of adults 25 years of age
or older and by the expected years of schooling of children of school age. The
dimension of the standard of living is measured according to the GNI per capita.
3. Characteristics of the human
development index
Health: measured according to life expectancy at birth.
Education: measure of the adult literacy rate and the combined gross rate of adults
with primary, secondary and higher education, as well as the years of compulsory
education.
Wealth: measured by GDP per capita in international dollars.
4. It is the amount of options a human being has in his own environment, to be or do
what he wants. The greater the number of options, the more human development,
the fewer options, the less human development
5. Gini Index
It is a methodology to measure the level of inequality in the countries. Firstly, it was
applied to sectors such as health sciences, engineering, chemistry, ecology or
transport, in the distribution of income has been where it has had the greatest
resonance.
6. It is based mainly on the Lorenz Curve, a graphic representation that allows to
visualize the income of people in a country. Lorenz proposes a direct relationship
between two variables: the percentages of population with the percentages of income.
Each of them is located in one of the axes of the plane and the resulting curve is the
evolution of income
7. In the axis of the ordinates (vertical) the income is located and in the abscissa
(horizontal) the population groups of the country in question. The latter are located
according to the level of income: those with the lowest income to the left and those
with the highest income to the right of the table.
If the resulting curve is completely straight,
similar to the hypotenuse of an equilateral
triangle, it means that that country has an
index of absolute equality. But if, on the
contrary, the curve is equal to the two legs of
the same triangle, the result supposes a high
index of inequality among its inhabitants.
8. The Index of Human Development Adjusted
by inequality
Proposes a method to adjust the HDI, in order to reflect the distribution of human
development achievements for the population and for each of the different
dimensions. That is, not only considers the average achievements for a given
country (in health, education and income), but in turn takes into account the
distribution of them throughout the population, penalizing the average value for
each dimension depending on how uneven it is.
9. In this sense, in an ideal context, where there would be perfect equality, the IDH-D
would coincide with the HDI, while, in the presence of inequities, it will be located
below the HDI.
Therefore, we can consider the difference between both indices (IDH and IDH-D)
as a measure of the cost or loss in human development that arises as a product of
inequality. In addition, we could consider the HDI as a potential level for a given
country in terms of human development.
10. Not only considers the average achievements for a given country (health,
education, income), but also how they are distributed throughout the population,
penalizing the average value for each dimension depending on what
unequal that is.
