This document discusses how hospitals can become more environmentally friendly or "green" to reduce stress for patients and staff. It defines a green hospital as one that enhances patient well-being while efficiently using natural resources. Green hospitals focus on using sustainable building materials and designs, conserving energy and water, reducing waste and emissions, and properly managing medical waste. Implementing green standards provides economic benefits like lower costs and resource usage. The document lists some green focus areas for hospital design and examples of green cleaning products used in other hospitals.
2. INTRODUCTION
• Hospitals are increasingly being
referred to as place to cause
stress among the patients and
staff. The high grief exposure
coupled with work pressure
leads to higher stress among
staff. In case of patients, stress
comes more naturally.
• Eco- friendly hospitals by way of
systematic interventions can
provide soothing environment
to limit the stress and even
medical errors.

3. • A Green hospital is one which enhances patient well being, aids in
curative process while utilizing natural resources in an efficient
environment friendly manner.
• The Green Hospital is defined as a hospital that has taken the
initiative to do the one or more of the following:
choose an environmentally friendly site
utilizes sustainable and efficient designs,
thinks green during construction and keeps the greening process going.
Reduce co2 generation

4. GREEN & CLEAN standard
provides necessary guidelines
for effective environment,
facilitating hospitals in
managing bio-medical waste
and in controlling infection.
Aiming to accelerate the
development, use, and diffusion
of environmentally preferable
products, practices and
construction of green buildings
in hospitals and medical
practices worldwide.

6. • The green hospital
movement began years ago
following the U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC)’s
release of their Leadership
in Energy and
Environmental Design
(LEED) standards for
building construction.

7. Green Hospital
promotes the
following :
Sustainable building
materials
Products free of
mercury, latex, PVC,
and DEHP
Energy and water
conservation
Tools and resources
for environmentally
preferable purchasing
Greener cleaners
Integrated pest
management

9. The compliance to this standard provide tangible
economic benefits including the following;
• 1. Reduced raw material/ resource use
• 2. Reduced energy consumption
• 3. Improved process efficiency
• 4. Reduced waste management and disposal cost
• 5. Utilisation of recoverable resource
• 6. Reduced hospital acquired infection and therefore reduced
patient length of stay.

12. Green cleaning example:
• In 2009, Kaiser Permanente, headquartered in Oakland,
California, adopted substituting cleaning chemicals with safer
alternatives to decrease toxicity exposure at its participating
hospitals and facilities.
• Total green cleaner use increased from 23% to 43% of purchase
dollars, and because green cleaners are sometimes less
expensive, a savings of approximately $85,000 (9% annually)
was realized.
