2. Evaluation- question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products.
My product is an R&B magazine, which uses and in some ways develops the forms and conventions of other R&B
magazines. VIBE magazine (pictured right), demonstrates how conventions are used in a magazine media product. The
front cover has many unique selling points which will ‘lure’ the reader into wanting to know more about what is inside.
Such as ‘Alicia Keys’ and ‘Miguel- sex, drugs and R &B’. The front cover of any magazine is paramount because it is the
‘shop front’ of any magazine and therefore should be eye-catching, bright and interesting. These covers are bright through
the colours used for the Masthead and the strap line. Its also clear that the strap line is not necessarily a constant feature
and the use of a puff can sometimes highlight key features instead. I chose to use a puff on my front cover to highlight a
key feature in my magazine. Interestingly, there is evidence that this is an established magazine which features ‘big’
artists as they are standing in front of the magazine mast head/ title. Although my magazine does have a masthead, mine
stands in front of the model. I saw my magazine as less established and the model as also less established which is why I
chose to organise mine in this way.
Underneath the masthead, I have further added a selling line, ‘Rhythmik and Beats’ which connotes not only music but
also a certain genre of music. I also wanted to sell a whole lifestyle and the idea of my magazine promoting up and
coming artists such as Jade. VIBE magazine also does this but also attempts to sell a lifestyle which is aspirational,
featuring already established artists.
I have also used a play on the spelling of ‘Rhythmik’ which serves to further connote an urbanised nature to my magazine,
thereby attracting a specific audience.
Looking at VIBE magazine, the images are dominant and seem to be placed in the foreground with almost a 3D effect.
For example, the image at the top clearly shows Alicia Keys as heavily stylised with strong make up looking directly at
the audience. The image below, is also stylised and the model’s hand signals are very significant as are the props and mis-
en scene in the images. For my magazine, I chose for my artist to be important, but to remain as an artist and not as a
model. I did want the features to stand out equally. I felt that I wanted to take the focus off model style images and go
back to music magazines being about the music.
3. Magazines also tend to develop a house-style, again evident in VIBE magazine. The expression house style refers to the specific usage and
editing conventions followed by writers and editors to ensure stylistic consistency in a particular publication or series of publications
(newspapers, magazines, journals, websites, books). According to Wynford Hicks and Tim Holmes, "An individual publication's house style
is increasingly seen as an important part of its image and as a marketable commodity in its own right." the reader therefore knows which
product they are looking at and this further helps to create brand loyalty.
Looking at VIBE magazine, the typography used remains the same for all publications, although there may be slight variations in terms of
colour and style. Whatever the differences, the product is still recognised as VIBE magazine.
I developed a house style in my magazine. The typography used depicted an ‘urban’ style, with the main colours being used as white, purple and
black. The use of ‘&’ in my heading also depicts an informal style of language which I wanted to convey to the audience that I intended to
target. This brand featured throughout my magazine.
I also maintained the model style, on the front cover, which tends to also depict models in a non- smiling yet stylised manner. Also, the model’s
style of dress is also representative of the music style and audience that I want to target. My model has her head wrapped in a scarf, is wearing a
hoodie, has braids and also is a young black female. I intended for the mode of address to be a direct yet challenging expression on my model’s
face. I wanted her to be symbolic of many young women who are talented and want to get into the music business. I also wanted her to be a
role model to many young women.
Although I looked at other magazines, I was more inspired by VIBE magazine as I liked their simplistic yet effective style. I have tended to
veer towards a darker mise en scene on my front cover than VIBE though. I felt that this connotes a more mysterious and darker overall tone
which again I feel represented my urban theme. It can also represent power, luxury, sophistication and exclusivity on one hand; and mystery on
the other. This is contrasted with a white, pink and purple which is a brighter colour against the black; I feel that this addition of colour changes
the message of my brand, thereby making it less representational of a sinister product or the macabre. The mystery is included due to my artist
being an emerging artist that is yet to fully be established. The line on the front cover which states, “People don’t know me yet, but they will,
” identifies her as not yet known by a wider audience.
I also chose to use pink on my front cover so that it gives a feminine look to the magazine, as my magazine is targeted towards females. However,
the image challenges that idea of the magazine just being for females because, the model could be giving off a sexualised appeal. This refers to the
idea of Laura Mulvey’s male gaze. This talks about women being objectified and being gazed at. Its very important that although my front cover
may demonstrate this, that she is also seen as a strong credible artist., in this way though, the magazine may be appealing to be male and females.
4. THE MASTHEAD
The masthead is often located in the top left hand corner
of the page and can take up a third of the page. My
masthead is on the right as I wanted to challenge that
particular convention. My masthead is bold, in white
capital letters and stands out on the page because it is
against a purple
USE OF A PUFF
The use of the puff engages the target
audience to read. The flasher “1ST
ANNUAL GLOBAL ISSUE’ stands out on
the page due to the purple and white
writing.
THE HOUSE STYLE
The house style is already
evident on the cover as the mast
head typography follows through
cover as a whole.
SELL LINES
The sell lines on the cover of the magazine states the key information that is
in R &B magazine. The wording of the sell lines “PEOPLE DON’T KNOW
ME YET. BUT THEY WILL.” engages the reader as the target audience
would want to know about this new artist. The other selling features are
evident and in white writing so they also stand out.
USE OF A PULL QUOTE/ LINE
The use of line ‘Secret Album,’ has a double meaning.
It’s an album that the wider audience may not be
aware of yet, but it is also the name of her album. This
attracts the target audience as it introduces an artist
that has produced a ‘long awaited’ album. It also
indicates that there is going to be an interview with
JADE.
THE MAIN IMAGE
The main image is a close up of JADE. The
positioning of the model is central as she is the focal
point and the main selling feature of the magazine. I
have followed the conventions of magazine covers
and placed the sell lines around the outside. The
main image targets the fans of those who have
already heard of Jade.
THE MAIN COVER LINE or
THE LEFT THIRD
The main cover line JADE’S
SECRET ALBUM is big and
bold so that the audience
can see it from a distance
when looking at a variety of
music magazines. By
positioning the main cover
line in the middle of the page
the reader will be able to see
it clearly on the front of the
magazine
BARCODE-DATE/ISSUE/PRICE
The barcode and price are located on the bottom
of the front cover so that the date/issue and price
can be easily located to check when the issue
was released.
I have also added social networking links such as Instagram and Twitter, onto the front at the bottom left corner. This
encourages audience interaction.
5. I have added the title of the magazine at the top, in order to keep to the house style and branding. I have also added a website address, which indicating
media convergence. My magazine is not simply in print, but is also online. This means it is accessible for the audience on various platforms. The content
stands out making it clear for the audience to see, and getting them engaged. The contents page also features a fashion column, which demonstrates that
the magazine features a broad range of other topics other than music, but content that is also part of a music lifestyle. Music is very much linked to style
and fashion and is not just about sound. In fact, in some ways it has become more about image I think. My magazine does follow this convention, but as
mentioned earlier, the music is the main event in my magazine. The contents also have a page where it features concert dates, which is key for music
magazines, as this would tell the target audience when specific concerts are and where. I have also ensured that there is an opportunity for readers to win
prizes as a method of drawing them in and keeping them as readers.
Both magazines have followed a house style. The use of the
magazine ‘brand’ and the typography remain consistent
throughout the product. Both also feature the main artist on the
front cover through to the contents page. VIBE magazine has
attempted to draw out it’s unique style with the writing of the
word ‘contents’ in a non- conventional way. I chose instead to
stick to a more conventional method, while sticking to the
house style. Purple continues through in my contents page,
from the front cover. Both magazines do somewhat subscribe to
the stereotype of what an R & B artist would look like and
wear. Yet they both appear confident. Again, VIBE has placed
more emphasis on the artist’s image than the features around
him which are in smaller typography. I only wanted to use two
images on my contents page , but wanted to place equal
emphasis on the features and typography.
6. For the double page spread, I have used a conventional layout, to help structure it formally. I have again adhered to the house style and
ensured the same typography of the title ‘JADE’S SECRET ALBUM,’ following on from the masthead of my magazine.
I have used a more striking image of the artist and again played on her image. The location used is not the key feature and therefore it is fairly
bland as I want the reader’s eye to focus on the image in the foreground. However, the image does connote the theme that she came from a
fairly simplistic lifestyle which forms the backbone of her music. The dried leaves on the floor were a deliberate attempt to connote the life
that is now behind her compared to her current life which is slowly changing. The white background is also symbolic of a rebirth of an
emergence of something new. I liked the idea of her trainer being in the foreground, as clothing is also a big part of the R & B music scene.
She is wearing trainers that would be viewed a street or urban style which is the representation I was looking to achieve. JADE’S stance in the
image also depicts youth, strength and empowered. This meets the needs of the target audience as they are also young.
I kept to the same colour scheme to show the continuity of the house style. Black has again formed the base colour and the typography
remains in the same colour throughout. At the bottom of the page there is again evidence of the web address which allows the reader to also
interact with the magazine using a different platform.
7. Evaluation question 2- How does your product represent particular social groups?
The social group I have targeted are aged 16-30, who are into R&B music, such as Alicia Keys and Rhianna. The magazine is tailored to suit their needs and
interests. This has been portrayed through featuring articles such as iTunes lists of the best music releases, the most powerful R & B singers and fashion that
an individual like this would be interested in wearing.
The use of language and mode of address is informal, which would suit individuals from 16-30. The magazine addresses the reader as a friend. Offering
advice, updating on the R&B music scene and speaking in their style of language. This may include the use of colloquialisms which the group can relate to.
Such as the spelling of ‘Rhythmik.’
The artist I have featured in my magazine is of a similar age and/or style of my social group. This means the audience will be in a position to connect with
her, as it’s centred around their own.
Her clothes are simple and black, which shows her to be sophisticated and classy, but also trendy, as this group may wear hoodies, jeans and trainers. This
would have a relation to the social group, as they would consider the model as one of their own. I took multiple shots of her doing different poses that would
suit the genre of the magazine.
Costume: Casual clothes such as: jeans, hoodies, polo’s, party shirts. These are the types of clothes that R&B singer’s would be
wearing with maybe some smart depending on the song.
Props: A lot of ‘bling’ and plenty of jewellery like: rings, necklaces. A lot of make up too on women to make them stand out.
Location: Places like a dance/night club or a big house or places with graffiti.
8. However, R&B has been portrayed through the media in both a negative and positive
way.
A negative way because of all the things the artists get involved in outside of music
i.e. drugs or Chris Brown and Rihanna’s ‘incident’ gives R&B a bad name.
But a positive way as they produce popular music and these artists sell millions of
records each month with their music getting into the top 10 of the charts!
What is R&B music?
R&B is a genre of popular African-American music that originated in
the 1940s early 1950s, The term rhythm and blues was frequently
applied to blues records
Starting in the mid-1950s, After this style of music contributed to the
development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to
music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well
as gospel and soul music.
By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was used as a blanket term for soul
and funk. By the 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becoming
known as "Contemporary R&B"
R&B music is listened to by a
wide range of. social groups.
It breaks the barriers of
gender, class and ethic
groups in its appeal.
Although they are often
stereotyped in a negative
way, this music has
increasingly become a feature
of radio stations such as
Radio 1, capital FM and Kiss
FM.
9. The social group I am targeting may see themselves as urbanised and living in the city. They will enjoy going to parties, clubs and hanging
out with their friends. They will also enjoy music videos and spend quite a substantial amount of time watching these. They will enjoy
social media which includes Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook and selfies with attitude and pouts.
A lot of their media is watched via their phones or tablets. These products are very important to them. This social group are also into
wearing expensive street wear which is part of the ‘urban culture’. This social group are very loyal to a certain music style and fashion yet
they view themselves as independent. This group places a lot of value on the celebrity culture as they often see them as subversive. This is
how they want to be seen, anti –establishment. They may also have sleeve tattoos and ‘bling’ and use a certain language which is ‘coded’.
The influence of African- American ‘street’ culture is evident at all levels. For example in clothing, music and language codes. My
magazine mirrors some of what is evident in youth culture. This social group wants things to happen quickly in their lives. This includes
fast food. Packaging and marketing plays a big role and this is recognised by the magazine industry.
The video on the left Yungen featuring Elise is an
example of the style of R&B that my social group would
choose to listen to. Although there is a lot of this music
genre released which is from the USA, there is also an
R&B music scene in the UK which many people enjoy. I
believe that my artist would fit into this genre as she is
British and will be released on to a UK audience.
10. Evaluation question 3
What institution might distribute your product and why?
The two media industries that I am going to look at are Time Inc UK and Bauer media.
NEWS!! IPC Media, publisher of magazines including Marie Claire,
NME and What's on TV, is to be rebranded by its US-based owner to Time
Inc UK. ... The publisher was rebranded IPC Media in 1998. IPC name to
disappear as Time Inc rebrands magazine publisher.
TIME INC UK SAY........ “WE ENGAGE WITH
ALMOST HALF OF ALL UK ADULTS IN PRINT
AND OUR AWARD WINNING WEBSITES
REACH OVER 28 MILLION GLOBAL USERS
EVERY MONTH.”
As Time Inc UK has such a large share of the UK magazine industry, they are an excellent option for my magazine. (see next slide). They would not only
ensure that my magazine is sold and marketed to a wide audience, but they would also be in a position to ensure that it can be viewed across various platforms.
This is obviously important today as my target audience will be tech savvy and will be more willing to engage with my product via a technical device than
print. I also note that this media institution produce NME. This magazine targets a completely different group to mine. Producing a magazine like mine will be
positive in terms of diversification and will ensure that the institution is also engaging with a more 'urban’ audience. I think this would be beneficial to them as
a media industry and bring in more readership and revenue. This is especially important as many writers are now discussing the fact that less people are
reading music magazines like NME.
The Guardian as long ago as 2014 asked “Have you fallen out of love with music magazines?” and argued that the
New Musical Express is down to less than 15,000 copies sold a week, with Q Magazine seeing a 21.8% year on year decline, and now averaging 46,096 copies
per issue. Kerrang! and Mojo have also seen their print sales decline.
However, NME’s publishers point out that its content is read by many more today, than read the magazine in its print heyday, pointing to an 85% increase in its
mobile traffic year-on-year.
The Guardian also asked whether there is a growing demographic who now get their music news, interviews and features online via blogs, websites, and social
media. This would also mean that it would be beneficial for my magazine to be produced online.
11. Time Inc UK produce
a huge amount of the
magazines that we
read. They are able to
produce magazines
across gender, social
class and certainly
across lifestyles and
interests.
12. Bauer Media is a multi-platform media
group, with locations across the UK.
Following their purchase of Emap in
2007,The Bauer Media Group acquired a
collection of media brands. This
includes Heat and Grazia as well as a radio
portfolio of national radio brands such
as KISS FM UK and Magic, and regional
radio brands across major UK cities. In
2013, Bauer Media also acquired
the Absolute Radio Group from Times of
India.
Bauer Media also broadcasts TV music
channels including The Box TV, in a joint
venture with Channel 4.In the UK Bauer
Media is the sister company of H Bauer
Publishing, who publish titles including
Take a Break, Bella, that's life! TV Choice
and Total TV Guide.
The magazines also produced include Q, which started out as a music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom. Originally it was to be called Cue
(named after the act of cueing a record to play). However the name was changed so that it wouldn't be mistaken for a snooker magazine. The Q music brand has
expanded to Radio and Television, with Q Radio and Q TV being music entertainment that specialises in indie, rock and alternative. Kerrang! is a brand that
specialises in rock music. It originally began as a magazine and in 2004 Kerrang Radio was launched. A Kerrang TV channel also exists.
I find the imagery used to represent Bauer Media bold, fun and symbolic of freedom. This encompasses a freedom in style with its imaginative use of colour.
Although pink is used, I still feel that the image is non- gender specific and can apply to quit a wide range of social groups. I would like my magazine to
represent this.
13. They described this project as the Millennials Chapter which is their first major audience led study and the first major release from Bauer Knowledge,
their research and insight division.
They say that:
Bauer Media also has a good share of the magazine industry. They also have convergence in terms of the radio stations that they own which will mean
that my artist’s music will be played on their stations and therefore she will be given exposure. I find this appealing. I also noted that by looking at their
information, they tend to offer more diversification and seek to explore different social groups. This doesn’t follow through in terms of the music
magazines that they produce though. From looking at the music magazines, they tend only to focus on Indie/ rock magazines and this audience, such as
Kerrang.
Also, through researching their products, I noticed that they had a group which they called the ‘Millenials.’
“through using both qualitative
and quantitative research,
they have unearthed powerful
findings about the pressures,
passions and motivations that
both unite and differentiate
one of our strongest
audiences, digitally native 16-
34 year olds.”
While this research is insightful and recognises that there we are in a
digital age which has impacted greatly on the audience, I felt that the
image which accompanied this failed to meet the needs of my target
audience. I don't think that this group were necessarily representational of
what I wanted to achieve as they are not a diverse group. Only in terms of
gender.
14. Out of Bauer Media and Time Inc UK, I would want Bauer Media to distribute
my music magazine, because their company can guarantee that my media
product can be distributed across many media platforms, this including
Radio. Because Bauer Media has music radio stations such as: Kiss FM UK,
Absolute Radio Group and Magic, they can promote the new singer from my
product on multiple music radio stations for the audience to hear her new
music. Bauer Media can also distribute the singer of my magazine onto
music channels like: Box TV, to promote the RnB singer with her new album.
I would also go with Bauer Media because, they distribute my magazine
online, as there is a decline in print because the audience a digital mode of
communication (digital tablets, phones, laptops) to watch films, read
contents, take pictures and many things. Going with Bauer Media benefits
both them and me because, it promotes my product as well as the RnB
singer featured and it also benefits Bauer Media for targeting a wider
audience like the urban community and those who have interest in hip hop
culture.
15. Evaluation question 4
Who would be the audience of your product and why?
My audience would be females from a range of 16-30 years old. I wanted to target this
audience because, I am female myself and it would be easier to know the type of styles and
interests of the same gender as me and age group. I also target this particular audience,
because I can express creativity in the product as much than targeting towards male.
Although, I have mentioned famous RnB names that are male, e.g. Chris Brown, because
females would be attracted to any features that would be talking about male singers. I put a
price point of £1.30, because it would be affordable for the youth, as they don’t own much
money than adults who work for money. The type of audience I want to target is those who
have the same interests in RnB music and those who would aspire to become involved in the
mousic industry, working with music or becoming a singer.

traget audience, i
interviewed a few people to

17. Based on the table, all three respondents are in common concerning their demographics. They are all female and
they fall in the age range for my magazine. And they are all of black ethnicity, but the only difference is that one is
British and the other is Congolese. Based on their psychographics, most of their interest are the same and some
are different. Monique is interested in cooking and travelling, while Ketsia is more into reading ansd watching
movies and Sharika likes to be socially interactive with friends and social media, as well as playing games and so
on. Their hobbies are somewhat similar e.g. Ketsia and Sharika both like to listen to RnB and hip hop music and
playing sports. They are more active and physical, whereas Monique is low key and likes to shop for natural and
designer clothes. Based on Monique’s hobbie interets in shopping, it correlates with my magazine, as it also
features a fashion section, which can attract her to the magazine. With the Ketsia and Sharika, they would be
attracted to my magazine because fof it being an RnB magazine. Knowing a person’s demographics and
psychographics is important for targeting a specific audience, beaucse audiecnes have become more
fragmented, whereby people like different things in different ways. An example of this is that one person may like
to interact with others in person/ physically and some may like to interact with others on social media more than
face to face. Concerning with social media, since the 3 respondents likes to use social media, they would also be
attracted to my magazine because my magazine features two social media accounts, whcih shows that my
product is not only available by print but also on digital technology as well. This is becasue there is a decline in
print, as most audiecnes prefer to use digital technology to listen to music, read newspapers/ magazines online,
listen tothe radio, take pitures and so on. The social accounts available for my magazine would give access to
the audiecne to be updated with the magazine and see what else the magazine features, other than what is on
the print.
18. Evaluation question 5-
How does your product attract/ address your audience?
I went around and asked a
couple of people who are
interested into RnB music and
recorded their feedback that
they like about my product
Monique Gray- “It’s
bright, it gives a lot of
information. It keeps
up to date with social
media like: Instagram
and Twitter, it looks
real. It’s realistic with
the price tag and the
barcode. The image
is popping out on the
background”.
Leigh Ann Campbell- “it’s
different compared to other
magazines. With other
magazines, there is many
different pictures and with this I
like the continuity of the images
but with different poses”.
Jade Jude- “The colour is quite bright, I
like the brightness of the purple. Purple
is my favourite colour, so it really pops
and it’s extravagant. I like how it gives
information at the front and gives an
incite on what the magazine is going to
feature”.
19. Monique Gray- “It looks
like a real magazine
contents page. It’s really
good. I like he page
numbers that are a
different colour to
contrast with the white
text”.
Leigh-Ann Campbell-
“Looks really real. The
image is great. I like the
writing in the columns is
very attractive. I would
want to read more if I saw
this inside the magazine”.
Jade Jude- “The
layout is good. The
pictures look good.
They suit the theme
and style of the
magazine. The
numbers in pink
contrasting with the
white is very creative”.
20. Monique Gray- “It
looks realistic; not too
much information on
one page; gets straight
to the point. Has a
quote and I like the
colour scheme, how it
continues throughout
the product”.
Leigh-Ann Campbell-
“The font is really nice
and attractive. If I were
to turn to this page, I
would want to read
more in the magazine,
because its young and
it suits to the youth
culture”.
Jade Jude- “Quite a
lot of information on
it. It’s very detailed,
and I like the image.
It also correlates to
the urban lifestyle.
Very attractive”.
21. Based on the reviews from my peers, the main thing that attracted them is the colours
that complement each other and how they contrast with each other. They also like the
fonts that was used, as it gives a youthful and creative touch. They also commented on
the images being related to the urban lifestyle, which is what I wanted to achieve. They
also liked the layout of the contents page, that it looks realistic and different compared
to other magazines that they know of. One said that if she was to see this type of
magazine with the colours and the layout of the pages, she would want to purchase and
read the magazine. Another peer said that they liked the fact that the magazine can be
accessible onto social media, that it’s not just a print.
22. Evaluation question 6- what have you learned about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
When I first started the photo shoot for the magazine, I used my technical device, IPad Air 2
for the production process. I was going to resort to using a digital camera with high definition
to take my pictures, but instead I practiced with the IPad to take crisp and clear shots of
various subjects e.g. flowers, objects, people, landscapes and so on. During the production
process, using the camera was the best choice as my images came clear with 1080p. This
is the improvement of digital technology, as the IPad is the most recommended device as
well as IPhones for high resolution photos. This was reviewed by customers buying Apple
device in Apple stores or O2 stores online, reviewed the device with 5 stars. The images
were clear and so I was able to edit them onto Photoshop to make them even more crisper.
For the production process, I have mainly used Photoshop to edit and
produce my music magazine. I used a white background to start with and
then develop the purple background with a Gradient tool. With this tool I was
able to mix black and purple together to get a fade from the bottom. For font
of the mast head, I used a website consisting of different fonts. I wanted the
font to be fun and different to Vibe and Q magazine. For the text, I used a
text tool for the content. For the images, I edited them to make the images
brighter and easy to see. I did this by editing the curves and the brightness
of the images. For some images (like the one on the left) the natural lighting
was working on the day I took them, so I edited the image to get a much
warmer and more harder light in order to see the model in the picture. I have
also used the curve editing tool to create the dark going into light effect.
23. As part of the primary research and planning, I used a website called Survey Monkey to construct my music
magazine questionnaire. It was easy to use to create open and closed questions, as well as add options and option
boxes for the audience to reply with qualitative data allowing them to be more open on their opinion. I constructed a
survey to find out what sort of magazine does the audience read; what music they are interested in; if they read
magazines by print or online; whether they purchase magazines or not and so on. With the data collected as pie
charts, I collected a lot of data, which helped me to produce the magazine to the expectation of the audience. I also
created a survey for the mast head of the magazine to get the opinion from the audience of what they prefer from
the selection: ‘Edge’, ‘Bass’, ‘Rhythmik’, ‘Idol’, ‘Shuffle’. From the data collected, the majority of the respondents
liked the word ‘Rhythmik’ because they said it’s different, as ‘rhythmic’ isn’t spelt with a ‘K’, they also said it was
creative and suits to the genre of the magazine.
Along with the research and production process, I have learnt to set up a blog to keep track of the researching and
planning process, as well as keeping track of the production process of the magazine. I dated each work to show the
process of the work onto Word Microsoft and then I uploaded it onto blogger. With blogger, it was a vital part to keep me
in track with what I have done and what needs to be done; filling in the gaps of the research and keeping in check with
work on Photoshop. I also upload my images onto blogger, to show the different images I have taken e.g. the models,
the location.
I have also learnt how to use Slide share to post my research and planning, as well as this evaluation in order
for my work to seen not just as a PowerPoint, bust also onto the website. I have also used Slide share to do
compare my work to other media students work and see what they have included in their evaluations and what
they have done for their researching and planning. It was really helpful because it was easy to access, easy to
see each slide and presentation and it was easy to search for examples of good media coursework.
24. I have also learned how to use Prezi, not only for researching and looking at what other students
have done for their magazine, but also how to put this evaluation onto each slide. At first it was
difficult to add text and put the text in the right position and minimise it, so I sought out a better
solution. I print screened each evaluation slide, cropped it and paced them onto each slide for the
separate questions. With Prezi, I was able to pick a certain theme for the background that would suit
the theme of the magazine. The theme of my Prezi page has a microphone.
25. Evaluation question 7- looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have
learned in the progression from it to
Comparing from my music magazine to my preliminary product, I say I
have progressed with many areas of the production leading up to the
final product.
The quality of the camera improved, as in my preliminary I used my
IPad to take the photos, and the quality wasn’t of high standard. The
quality of the image looked like a copy, paste and crop image and didn’t
merge well with the page, however, with the main product I have used a
camera, give gave a definite and more crisp quality. With the images
used by the camera, I was able to manipulate the images more on
Photoshop to achieve a good quality for the magazine, thus making it
stand out.
The quality of the lighting improved, since the preliminary had a sort of
low lighting in some areas of the image, which I have tried to fix on
Photoshop using the curves adjustments and brightness. However, this
didn’t help with the intensity against the white text, as increasing the
lighting resulted in the text being unclear to read. However, with the
music magazine, I have used natural lighting with a white background
to be have the outline of the model clear and be able to edit it on
Photoshop, which made it easier to have different coloured text against
the contrasted white background on the contents and double page
spread.

27. This shows the journey from mock ups to
the finalised cover on Photoshop.
28.
29. The colours of the preliminary was various colours which made it
attracting but also hard to have so many colours and try to contrast the
background with coloured bold text. However, with the main product, I
simply used simple colours for the background, with the front page colour
going from dark to light and using pink and white coloured text to contrast
against the dark background. This made it easier for the text to be seen
clearer and more effective.
In the preliminary I have kept the continuity of images on the front page
and the contents, but I haven't kept the same house style for the font, which
is one of the conventions of a magazine (keeping to the same style
throughout to show a link). For the main product, I have kept with the
costume feature, as the black would represent power and sophistication ( as
most RnB artists wear) and I have kept to the same house style throughout,
to show the magazine’s unique style and composition.
For the contents of the preliminary, I haven’t added enough content for it
to be successful, as I didn’t understand the conventions of a contents page.
However, with the main product, I have followed through a real magazine
(Q magazine) and have successfully produced a contents page that stands
out and follows the conventions needed for the contents page.
