Materials?
• Reference martials are books that cannot be
checked out of the library.
• These types of books give quick information on a
word, person, place or thing.
• Reference materials include dictionaries,
encyclopedias and atlases

6. What can a dictionary
answer?
• How do I make it mean more than one?
• What does the word mean?
• How do I spell the word?
• How do I use it in a sentence?
• How do I say it?

7. A dictionary gives you basic
information about a word, but an
encyclopedia gives you more.

8. What is an encyclopedia?
 A multivolume work
 In alphabetical order

9. Encyclopedias
• Give you a lot of information.
• Articles on many different subjects
including people, countries, inventions,
and history
• One book or volume may cover only
one letter of the alphabet

10. Let’s try it!
1) Look up a subject in your
encyclopedia.
2) Look up the same subject in your
dictionary.
3) Is it there? (If not, try looking up a
“thing”.)
4) What’s the difference?
