The words in bold (a, an, the) in the above sentences
are called articles or kata sandang in Indonesian.
We use articles before nouns.
1.We use a/an for indefinite singular nouns.
• Put a before nouns which begin with consonant sounds,
such as a bottle,
a window, a door, a butterfly,
a buffalo, a supermarket, a ukulele,
a uniform.
• Put an before nouns which begin with vocal sounds (a, i, u, e, o), such as an
apple, an island, an umbrella, an egg, an owl.
2.We use the for definite nouns (something that has already been mentioned).
Example: I have a smartphone. The smartphone is sophisticated.

Pay attention to the following sentences.

Pay attention to the words in bold. They are nouns.
The nouns following ‘This is/That is’ are singular nouns and the nouns following
‘These are/Those are’ are plural nouns. Singular means one, while plural means
more than one.

In singular forms, nouns don’t end in -s or -es and are usually preceded by an article
a or an. In plural forms, nouns end in -s or -es.

14. The words in bold are possessive adjectives. A possessive adjective shows
one’s possession or ownership. It always refers to the owners of items.
