1. A trade union is a formal association of workers that
promotes and protects the interests of its members
through collective actions. Under the trade union act
1926, the term is defined as any combination, whether
temporary or permanent, formed primarily for the
purpose of regulating the relation between the worker
and employee, or for imposing restrictive conditions
on the conduct of any trade or business and includes
any federations of two or more unions.
2. • Wages and Salaries: The subject which drew the
major attention of the trade union is wages and
salaries.
• Working Condition: The trade union with a view
to Safe guard the health of workers demand the
management to provide all the basic facilities.
• Discipline: Trade union not only conduct
negotiations in respect of the items with which
their working conditions may be improved.
• Personnel Policies: Trade unions may fight
against improper implications of personnel
policies in respect of recruitment, selection,
transfer, promotion etc.
3. • Employee – Employer Relation: Harmonious
relationship between the employee and employer is
a sin qua non for industrial peace. A trade union
strives for achieving this objective.
• Welfare: As stated earlier, trade unions are meant
for the welfare of the workers. Trade union as a
guide, consulting authorities and cooperates in
overcoming the personnel problems of worker.
• Safeguarding organizational health and the
interest of the industry: organizational heath
can be diagnosed by methods evolved for grievance
redressal and techniques adopted to reduce the
rate of absenteeism and labour turnover and to
improve the employees relations.
4. Improve their bargaining power
Voice their concerns grievances, problems etc in a
united manner.
Have a platform for self expression and cross
fertilizations of ideas, thoughts, feelings, concerning
work, work environment and working conditions etc.
Minimize discrimination and favouritism specially
in matters relating to pay, work, transfer promotion
etc.
Secure adequate protection in case of illness,
accident, unemployment etc.
