This presentation provides an overview of Bangladesh's ready-made garments sector. It discusses the sector's history and growth since the 1970s. Currently, there are over 5,600 factories employing around 4 million workers, mostly women. The sector accounts for around 80% of Bangladesh's total exports and has helped the country become the second largest apparel exporter in the world. However, the sector also faces challenges such as infrastructure and safety issues, as evidenced by the 2013 Rana Plaza building collapse that killed over 1,100 people. The government has since taken initiatives to improve workplace safety standards and regulations in the industry.
