What’s the process of planning and conducting research?
1) Determine the key concepts or ideas in your assignment topic.
2) Use the key concepts or ideas in your topic and think of search words or terms to use
in the databases/search engines (think of synonyms and alternate terms).
3) Search for articles on the Library homepage or choose a database.
̶ Use the Library Guide for help:
http://latrobe.libguides.com/anthropology
4) Read the abstract first: is it relevant to your assignment?
If yes - locate the full articles or PDF – use
5) Write your assignment and REFERENCE!

Search tips
Truncation: A truncation symbol added to the end of a term allows you to find word
variations or alternative spellings.
• Australi* = Australia, Australian, Australians
Wildcards (use for alternative spellings) are used to substitute a symbol for a single
letter (character) of a word
• organi?ation = organisation or organization
Phrase searching: This requires terms be searched in the exact order specified within
the “quotation marks”.
• “drug use”
