house, coming from north, west and east

A solar chimney is a key element to ensure:
- The passive ventilation of the house
- The control of natural lighting

The simulation results showed a remarkable reduction of
the temperature in the house during a typical summer
day, by controlling the chimney opening

Simulations gave the following results:
-the chimney works well to cool the house down
during the hottest hours ( 9 – 18 ) exploiting the
high temperature of the exterior wall.
-the optimal number of air inlets is 3 for each wall
of the living room and 2 in the bedroom.

Three differents cases were simulated:
-the house without the arch;
-the house with arch and panels;
-the house with totally covered arch.
Best results in the third configuration
Compromise between the second and
the third configuration by using brise
soleils on the arch
Practically unfeasible

-The SOLAR DECATHLON is an excellent opportunity to let the students face with sustainable
house design and realization
-The international collaboration between WVU and UTV is a major strength of STILE as the
schools are complementary in their skills
