Over 2.3 billion people make
use of social media platforms.
91% of retail brands make
use of 2 or more social media
channels. Internet users have
an average of 5 social media
accounts. Social media users
have increased by 176 million
from last year.

Social media comprises
several online networks
aimed at having
comprehensive data
sharing input, large scale
communication and
collaboration as well as
multiple interactions with
regards to various spheres
such as Health, Family,
Business and Finance,
Education, Politics, and so
on

To evaluate and
analyze the adverse
effects of the
overuse of social
media among youths
and give
recommendation on
how these adverse
effects can be
reduced.

5. MATERIAL AND METHOD
Questionnaires that
comprise of 22 questions.
A total number of 302
people, some from Africa,
Europe, Asia and America
participated in the survey
(male: 51% and female:
49%).
The average age of the
responders is 22 ± 3 years.
Variation statistical method
and Microsoft Excel 2013
were used.

highest adverse effects of social
media overuse, followed by Asia,
then Europe

8. This means they spend 15 - 60 days per
year on social media. By the time the
average aged responder of 22 years reaches
40 years old, he or she must have spent
almost 1 year on social media.

43.2% recommended creating
awareness on the positive use
of social media as a solution to
cut down it’s overuse.
22.9% approved of meeting
people face to face.
22% agreed to implementing
age limits on websites and 11%
consented to banning of certain
social media websites.

17. CONCLUSION
In summary the adverse effects include;
Wasting too much time
Procrastination
Decrease eye vision
The highest adverse effect on mental health is isolating
oneself.
Some of the proposed solutions are;
Putting off the gadgets, Wi-Fi or mobile internet to focus
on given tasks.
Avoid putting the gadgets at a close range with your eyes.
Creating awareness on the positive use of social media.
