1. I had previously researched into Claude Levi-Strauss in my AS project. I found out he
was a narrative theorist, who suggested that all narratives had to be driven forward
by conflict that was caused by a series of opposing forces.
The Composition and Framing task was based on opposites, much like Levi Strauss'
theory on binary oppositions. Binary oppositions are sets of opposite values which
reveal the structure of media texts. I could see the effect of opposites as I took two
pictures where I tried to immerge them and took two pictures of the opposites
separately.
Light Dark
Good Evil
Noise Silence
Youth Age
Right Wrong
Poverty Wealth
Strength Weakness
Inside Outside
This can support development on narrative structures in my
video, as I can make a story out of opposites. For example:
-It’s dark when the band are on stage, but it’s light when
we’re outside and other stuff is happening.
-An older woman and a younger person
-Lead singer is a girl but is supposed to be a man
Example of a video that fits the theory:
Beyonce – If I were a boy.
We understand ‘good’ as being the opposite of ‘evil.’
