Parent Volunteer and Visitor Guidelines
We are delighted to have parents and volunteers on our campus. Parents’ are a child’s first
teachers and are vital to the success of students throughout their education. These guidelines are
to assist parents in knowing how to help not only their child but all the children at College Park.
1. School hours are 8:13 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. If you come on campus between those times you
must sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge. This is for the safety of all students.
2. Non-College Park children are not permitted on
campus during the school day. Babies and
toddlers need to stay home during volunteer time
and for school events.
3. Parents are asked NOT to speak to the teacher
after the 8:13 bell rings. The teacher is to be
focused on the students to get learning started
immediately. If you have an emergency, please
go to the office and someone will assist you.
4. Our office staff has a full day of work and it is difficult for them to find time to send
messages or delivery late lunches/homework. If students forget snacks or lunches, they
will be able to purchase food at the cafeteria. Forgotten homework/forms may be returned
the following day but may include some classroom consequence. For an emergency
situation, please contact the school principal.
5. Please make an appointment to visit or volunteer in the classroom, either by making an
individual appointment or by signing up for a specific weekly time with the classroom
teacher. This way the teacher is prepared for you and can give you their undivided
attention.
6. Many teachers are available for a quick question after school. If the classroom door is
open, feel free to step in. If your question will take longer than a minute or so, it is best to
make an appointment. Many teachers have meetings right after school and they are
required to be on time.
7. Parents on campus may use the restrooms in the gym. By state law, NO adults are allowed
in a student restroom, not even to accompany their own child.
8. On Wednesdays, parents are asked to wait until the 12:35 dismissal bell rings before
entering the campus or taking their students home. The playground is closed until 6pm
every day.

13. Classroom Expectations
• This year we will be focusing on building
important life skills such as working hard
and participating.
• We’ll be using ClassDojo to give students
feedback on these skills. The points can
be individual or for a group, or for the
whole class.
• The students do not see each other’s
points, and you cannot see another
student’s points. The points are between
the teacher, parents and child.

14. Class Dojo at Home
• Class Dojo is the easiest way
to see your child’s progress on
these skills. You can look at
your child’s progress as often
as you like. We will check
messages once a week.
• Encourage the life skills we are
working on in class outside of
school.
• Celebrate wonderful classroom
moments at home !

16. College Park School
Homework Policy and Guidelines
The San Mateo Foster City School District has always had a homework policy to encourage parent
involvement, student responsibility and good work habits for all our life-long learners. Given the
challenging nature of our Mandarin Immersion program, the College Park faculty has provided more details
and clarity while continuing to adhere to basic district guidelines.
Knowing that half of the instructional time will be in Mandarin, all parents are expected to consistently
support English learning at home. This means visits to local libraries, daily shared reading and
conversations with adults and older siblings, and authentic writing at home such as letters. It is also
expected that since learning Mandarin was the parent choice, all families will encourage their student to
practice, will seek opportunities for their child to hear and use Mandarin, and will, if necessary, seek
assistance either before or after school for Mandarin homework.
College Park Homework Goals:
 To ensure all students read daily for information and pleasure
 To reinforce the link between home and school so parents will know what is being taught
 To provide additional practice and memorization of critical items such as math facts, spelling words
and Mandarin characters
 To teach student responsibility and good study habits “I can find my papers, get them home, work on
them with my family, and get them back to school promptly.”
This table gives a starting point for each grade level. Specifics from your child’s teacher are on the
reverse side. Many factors will change homework format including combination classes, language and
individual classroom needs. Please be aware that homework is not “graded” in the conventional sense but
most teachers do track for student understanding, responsibility and effort to complete all assigned work in a
timely manner. Please do not hesitate to email teachers with questions or concerns. We’re here to help!

17. Parent Teacher Workshops, Report Cards & Assessments
Parent Teacher Conferences/Workshops – Parent teacher meetings
will happen in the Fall and Spring.
FALL : November 14 - 18 (Parents Only)
During the Fall Workshops we will review the report card and
expectations and set goals. Parents will be given tips about how to help
their child succeed in school.
SPRING: March 27 - 31 (Parents & Students)
Spring Workshops will be student led with help from the teacher. This is
a time to share work, show progress and talk about more things students
can do at home to support their learning in the classroom.
Assessments
Students are assessed often throughout the year to allow teachers to
monitor progress made and areas of need. Students have Reading and
Writing tests 3 times a year. Mandarin Reading, Writing and Speaking
are assessed at the end of each trimester. Unit tests are given at the end
of each Science & Social Studies unit. In Math, we test after each unit and
give a cumulative assessment 3 times a year. These assessments along
with formal and informal observations help us determine grades for the
report card.
Report Cards
Report cards will be done 3 times during the year. Fall and Spring report
cards will be given to parents during parent teacher workshops. The
end of year report card will go home with students on the last day of
school. Report card scores reflect each child’s performance in the
common core state standards for their grade level as well as study skills
and behavior.

Each class gets 160 minutes of instruction in each language
on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Wednesdays
Each class gets 120 minutes of instruction in each language
on Wednesdays. Music for Minors happens weekly and Art in
Action monthly.

33. Mandarin Homework Policy
Mandarin homework is assigned weekly on Monday and due on Friday.
I expect students to do their best job on each homework assignment and that it
will be written neatly. However, it is the parents’ responsibility to supervise
your child at home to do the homework. Homework must be completed and
brought to class on Friday. Some projects might need a long period to finish and it
will be announced these in the Homework packet.
There are 2 types of Mandarin homework—character worksheets and “Story
Elements” worksheet. The on-line Story website for “Story Elements” assignment

I have attached a sample worksheet in this packet. Students are strongly
encouraged to divide their daily homework assignment like this:

Please set aside a time daily to supervise and help your child’s weekly work. Each
family is given 5 Homework Passes at Back-to-School Night. It is to be used
throughout the year due to the busy family life if students miss the assignments.
Students should staple this pass on the homework package and turn it in on the
due date.
