1. Case
Carlos came with a history of violence from the preceding year. I was warned by
his former teacher that he was the worst in the school: brandishing knives, serious
aggression, repeated suspensions, etc. My first belief is that a teacher should
never let history set a kid up for failure before you get to know him, so we started
with a clean slate.
Answer
First of all, I would request for a meeting with the parents or guardians to see if
they know where the violence may come from, or to see if they may be the cause
of any problem in the child's environment. Then, I would meet the student, I would
talk to him, and I would show him what the system is like at school and in the
classroom.
Besides, I would also meet with the counselor or school psychologist, so we both
would create a support network for the student.
Before everything, the meeting with the parents and the student would be as soon
as the kid came to the school. I mustn’t wait to pass the time and see if the student
behaves well or not.
And after all the meetings and everything else, I would try to have the child
observed in the classroom and in the schoolyard, but without being obvious, to
make sure that the student does not have any possible violent behavior.
And I would try to include him in all possible activities in the room, and so, keep
him busy.
