The Miseducation of the Filipino
Renato Constantino
Micabalo, Sheila Marie G. | BPA 1-1
"Education is a vital weapon of a people striving for economic emancipation, political
independence, and cultural renaissance. We are such people. Philippine education,
therefore, must produce Filipinos who are aware of their country's problems, who
understand the basic solution to these problems, and who care enough to have the
courage to work and sacrifice for their country's salvation. (Constantino, 1966).
Education is the backbone for molding one's mind to become a self-sufficient individual.
Every person has the potential to learn, not only for their own sake, but also for the benefit of
their country. To obtain the proper education, a person must devote their time, effort, and ability.
Hence, if education is the core of one’s consciousness, what will happen if the kind of education
that we know isn't one of which we should be proud of?
Renato Constantino, a nationalist diplomat, and historian, published The Miseducation of
the Filipinos in the late 1960s, exposing the Philippines' adherence to U.S. Western thinking,
which Constantino criticized for the nation's rotten lack of economic initiative, and which has
resulted in poverty even though the nation has a massive source of natural resources.
Filipinos were conquered and influenced in a variety of ways by the Americans during
the American Regime. These numerous methods have been applied by Filipinos in their daily
lives. Americans colonized the country to subjugate everyone's minds, not to expose them to
struggles and pain like the other nation did. The Americans use education to serve as a bridge
for conquering Filipinos and giving them a new outlook on life. The way the Americans educated
Filipinos was a true help to the Filipino people. They educated Filipinos as members of the
American colony, not just to prevent them from becoming uneducated and ignorant. We're all
aware of America's liberal tendencies. The Filipinos were protected from the Spanish and
Japanese. They showed us how to become self-sufficient and how to gain independence.

In school, American soldiers served as teachers. Our English dialect is influenced by
Americans. They applied English as the medium of teaching, which we have used until now. As
a result, we have already neglected our native language because of the adoption of the English
language as a medium of instruction during the American colonial period. Our own heritage has
already been forgotten. In our own country, we became foreigners.
On the other hand, our colonizers influenced us in more ways than one. Americans
have complete authority over our economic existence as a colony. Even if another nation is not
suitable for modernization, mostly for agricultural uses, the Americans educated us on how to
become industrialized. They showed us how to utilize them. We would not have become an
industrialized country without them. They demonstrated to us that our country is used for more
than just in agriculture. Thus, the American people share the benefits of our country's political
system. America assisted us in becoming a free democracy when we earned our freedom from
the Spanish. We've been taught to believe that certain political beliefs are absolute and can
apply to everyone.
We were overjoyed when foreigners referred to our country as a "paradise on earth,"
but many Filipinos were in pain and experiencing struggles. We don't think that some of our
fellow citizens are economically disadvantaged. If we did not even think of our countrymen first,
there would be no nationalism in our hearts. Many Filipinos, as now, prefer to purchase items
created in different nations rather than in the Philippines. There are also Filipinos that travel
overseas to serve others and seek employment.
Language is a tool for expressing one's thoughts. Thoughts are formed through words.
Before learning a foreign language, we must first learn our own native tongue. Filipino education
must recognize that we must educate with an understanding of Filipino culture to achieve a
better perspective and perspective around education. Distinctly remember that our hero died for
independence, not just in physical and emotional terms, but also mentally, so that we could be
released from thinking of colonialism. Not only to suggest American civilization, but also to imply
our own Filipino culture, education develops productive men and women. It is our culture that
will lead us to complete freedom. We must eliminate the marks of other countries that have
colonized our heritage ’s culture. For the sake of our culture's redemption, we must think about
our own independence, principles, and future.

To properly appreciate the importance of having our own education, there are still many factors
to consider nowadays. Why? Because miseducation still remains. The English language is used
to determine a person's level of intelligence and social standing in society. In school, English is
still the most used language. Rather than enriching our own native tongue. We've added plenty
of new languages. It's not just about English. In all of this, the American colonization has a
substantial impact on us in many ways. It has continued up to this point.
