3. What is Management
• Management (or managing) is the administration of
an organization, whether it is a business, government body.
Management includes the activities of setting the strategy of
an organization and coordinating the efforts of its employees to
accomplish its objectives through the application of
available resources, such as financial, natural, technological,
and human resources. The term "management" may also refer to
those people who manage an organization
4. What is Management
In the words of Henri Fayol (1841 –
1925) was a French coal-mine
engineer
• To manage is to forecast and to
plan, to organize, to command, to
co-ordinate and to control”.
5. What is Management
According to Peter Drucker (1909
– 2005) who was a renowned
American author and consultant in
the field of organizational
development and management
• “Management is a multi-purpose
organ that manages a business and
manages managers and manages
worker and work”.
7. Early Writing of Management
• Management (according to some definitions) has existed for
millennia, and several writers have produced background works that
have contributed to modern management theories. Some theorists
have cited ancient military texts as providing lessons for civilian
managers.
8. Example:
• Chinese general Sun Tzu in his
6th-century BC work The Art
of War recommends being
aware of and acting on
strengths and weaknesses of
both a manager's organization
and a foe's.
9. Example:
• Various ancient and medieval
civilizations produced
"mirrors for princes"
books, which aimed to advise
new monarchs on how to
govern.
11. Example:
• Indian Arthashastra by Chanakya
(written around 300 BC), is an ancient
Indian treatise on statecraft, economic
policy and military strategy.
12. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
• With the changing workplaces of industrial revolutions in the 18th
and 19th centuries, military theory and practice contributed
approaches to managing the newly-popular factories.

14. CLASSICAL THEORIES OF MANAGEMENT
• Classical management theory is based on the belief that workers only have
physical and economic needs. It does not take into account social needs or job
satisfaction, but instead advocates a specialization of labor, centralized
leadership and decision-making, and profit maximization.
15. SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT THEORY
• Frederick Winslow Taylor (March 20,
1856 – March 21, 1915) was an
American mechanical engineer who sought
to improve industrial efficiency. He was one
of the first management consultants. Taylor
summed up his efficiency techniques in his
book
The Principles of Scientific Management
16. SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT THEORY
Scientific management is a theory
of management that analyzes and synthesizes work
flows. Its main objective is improving economic
efficiency, especially labor productivity.
It was one of the earliest attempts to apply
science to the engineering of processes and to
management. Scientific management is sometimes
known as Taylorism after its founder, Frederick
Winslow Taylor
17. SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT THEORY
Taylor began the theory's development in the United States during the
1880s and '90s within manufacturing industries, especially steel.
18. WORKS OF FW TAYLOR
• Taylor’s Differential Piece-Rate System
• SHOP MANAGEMENT
• ART OF CUTTING MATERIAL
• PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT
19. APPLICATIONS
• From the above analysis it can be safely deduced that the success of
fast-food outlets partly; if not fully, owes to the application of
scientific management theory. “Scientific management has left a
huge and ongoing legacy, reaching down to the McDonald's
hamburger flipper and thousands of other standardised business
products and procedures
